THE WEST KEY NUMBER SYSTEM<br />
One of the unique features of West is the West Key<br />
Number System. For more than 100 years, the West Key<br />
Number System (sometimes referred to as “The Index to<br />
American Law”) has made legal research easier and faster<br />
by offering researchers a systematic way to search for<br />
cases that contain a specific point of law.<br />
After carefully reading and analyzing a judicial opinion,<br />
West’s attorney-editors assign each point of law in the<br />
opinion to one or more of the 400-plus topics shown on<br />
the following pages.<br />
To help you pinpoint your research, each topic is further<br />
divided into subtopics, each of which is assigned a specific<br />
key number. At present, there are more than 100,000<br />
individual key numbers—West’s way of making sure your<br />
research is always as precise and accurate as possible.
