The Westlaw Topical Highlights and Westlaw Bulletin
databases can alert you to developments in the law, which
can be useful in interviews.
Choosing a Westlaw Database
First, determine the type of information you want.
When you are unsure which database to use, browse the
Westlaw Directory. The Westlaw Directory is an index of
the databases and services available on Westlaw. Click
Directory at the top of any page to view the Westlaw
Directory. To browse the directory, click the links. Click
a database name in the right frame to access a database.
To access information about a database, including a
description of the database, current coverage information,
search tips, and available fields, click the Scope icon next
to the database name in the right frame.
Using Newspaper, Case Law, and Specialized
Directory Databases
“Doing your homework” prior to an interview will enable
you to carry on a relaxed, knowledgeable conversation
about the recent work or activity of a prospective employer.
It will also demonstrate your ability to perform research
concerning a judge or opposing counsel when you are
involved in litigation.
■ Using Newspaper Databases
National and regional newspaper databases, including the
New York Times database (NYT), give you access to
current information about attorneys, law firms, judges,
and businesses virtually anywhere in the country. A list of
selected legal and general newspapers follows.
