Principal's Report
Mary MacKillop Primary School, Narre Warren Nth
2011 was a year when the school could fully enjoy the buildings works that had been such a
feature of our school for the past three years. The school is extremely pleased that the
buildings have contributed so much to enriching the learning environment for our students.
In 2011 we welcomed Fr Brendan Hogan as our parish priest and in August Fr. Brendan
was joined by Fr. Janeesh Jose as Assistant Priest for our parish ‘Our Lady Help of
Christians, Narre Warren.’
The school in conjunction with Youth Leadership Victoria again offered a very successful
Out of School Hours (OSHC) program offering care for students prior to school from 6:30
am and after school until 6pm. Some mornings there can be 18 students in attendance and
on the most popular night up to 55 students can be in attendance. In addition, vacation care
programs were offered in all term holidays. Parents are very happy with the program.
Quality craft programs that were introduced in 2011 were the highlight for parents and
students alike. We are fortunate to be able to offer families this wonderful service. The
school is appreciative of the great staff that runs the program.
It was certainly a family time for staff members with five staff members, either giving birth
this year or early in 2012. We wish our new mums every blessing.
We truly have much to be grateful for at our school and I pray that each and every member
of our school community will be inspired by St Mary of the Cross MacKillop:-
Through her example, may we learn to recognize God’s will for each of us and
trust in God’s providence.
May her life of service awaken in us a deep respect for the poor and a passion
for justice.
May we share in her courage, see with her vision and love with her heart.
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop pray for us.
Education in Faith
Goals and Intended Outcomes
Mary MacKillop Primary School, Narre Warren Nth
In 2011 our goals in Education in Faith were:
To actively foster the growth of a distinctly Catholic spirit in the school, an environment
that, above all, loves and a community where God is found experienced and celebrated.
In 2011 we intended to meet this goal through:
Knowledge of the person and charisms of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop amongst
the students, staff and the parent community.
To improve knowledge of Scripture for students through development of teacher
knowledge and understanding in this area.
To further develop staff members’ skills in regards to the effective planning and
presenting of liturgies
Achievements
VALUE ADDED
In 2011 we were fortunate to have the new hall and stage area for celebration of Masses,
liturgies and reconciliations. The space, sound system, natural lighting, flexible spaces and room
for more seating has allowed this to become a very special sacred space for the school
community.
2011 was the first year that our school community celebrated our patron’s first feast day as a
canonised saint for the whole Church. This was a special day when the whole school gathered
for a Mass for the feast day. This was followed by buddy class activities with a focus on the life of
St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
The staff members were provided with many new electronic resources in 2011. These included a
folder containing St Mary of the Cross resources.
‘Journeys’ and ‘Together at One Altar’ resources were made available to staff and have assisted
them to plan liturgies and quality programs that support the curriculum.
Fr Elio Capra conducted a staff professional learning day that assisted staff to plan children’s
liturgies. The staff greatly appreciated his expertise and his teaching style and have successfully
implemented much of the content of his course into their own programs.
The ‘Composite Model’ of teaching scripture was the focus that the Assistant Principal
responsible for Religious Education focused on in assisting teachers in our school. During the
year he modelled lessons for staff, worked one-on-one with individual teachers to take their
understanding deeper and observed their teaching, offering them feedback on his observations.
Teachers have found this commitment to their learning to be of great value and all of these
initiatives have increased the quality of the learning for their students.
Learning and Teaching
Goals and Intended Outcomes
Mary MacKillop Primary School, Narre Warren Nth
In 2011 our goals in Teaching and Learning were:
To create a learning culture that encourages all members of the Mary MacKillop community to
strive for excellence through the implementation of a balanced and challenging curriculum
that is focused on each individual’s best performance.
To ensure students and staff experience ongoing success as learners, set themselves high
expectations and take responsibility for their own learning.
In 2011, we intended to meet these goals through:
Consistent application of learning procedures
Structured content and format of literacy and numeracy blocks
Improved student outcomes
ICT active in Literacy and Numeracy time
Achievements
VALUE ADDED
Whole school curriculum plan- This document has now been completed and
comprehensively implemented. The document consists of 8 concepts over a 2 year cycle
and is updated each term to ensure the needs of students in the cohort are met.
Literacy and Numeracy- Delivering quality teaching blocks with a focus on key elements of
literacy and numeracy continued to be a focus. Regular monitoring of student progress was
conducted by the classroom teacher and supported by leadership. Improved results in
numeracy and P-2 literacy data have been noted.
Planning for quality teaching-Planning days, teaching meetings and weekly level meetings
for teachers ensured consistency in sequenced learning procedures and targeted teaching
for needs of classes. Meetings with Assistant Principal of Teaching and Learning each term
were set up to ensure planning documentation met expectations, student needs and
curriculum requirements. SRC insight data indicates the extent to which there is effective
communication in the planning of the curriculum as a strength in the school.
Student learning- Students continue to engage in their learning through reflection, goal
setting, team work, displaying positive learning behaviours, making decisions about their
learning and achieving success. SRC insight data demonstrates an improvement in student
learning confidence; which is the extent to which students have a positive perception of their
ability as a student.
Professional learning for teachers- Professional learning for teachers is directly linked to
effective learning for students. All teachers were required to set teacher learning goals
designed to improve student learning. In addition to this, collegial visits, professional learning
team meetings, coaching conversations and review meetings with leadership all intended to
improve teacher effectiveness. Improved teacher effectiveness resulted in improved student
outcomes. Professional learning throughout the year delivered by CEO staff and consultants
provided opportunities for P-2 teachers focussed on improving spelling and writing
outcomes. Years 3-6 teachers focussed on embedding ICT in teaching practise by utilising
interactive learning through an increased use of technology devices.
2011 Annual Report to the School Community 8

Mary MacKillop Primary School, Narre Warren Nth
Assessment data and feedback-The Project management team began to explore feedback
practises in our school and deepening our understanding of the use of these to inform
practise. This work will continue into 2012. Analysis of formal assessment data continues to
be a focus in planning for school, level, class and individuals. Assessment days in February,
the diocesan assessment schedule, Naplan data and class assessments were all utilised to
improve student learning.
Literacy and Numeracy Special Learning Needs Students (LNSLN)- Our school
continues to value the learning needs of all students, a number of which qualify for additional
assistance through the Government funded special learning needs funding. In 2011, thirtyfour
students across all year levels accessed this funding with many needing support for
severe language disorder.
Additional support programs
We offer the STA- Speech Therapy Assistance intervention program to students who need
support in literacy achievement in particular oral language. EMU- Extending Mathematically
Understanding is a support program offered to year one students to assist with developing
number skills. In 2011, 12 students participated in this program conducted by an EMU
trained teacher.
PORTION OF STUDENTS MEETING THE MINIMUM STANDARDS IN YEARS 3 & 5
NAPLAN TESTS 2009 2010
2009–2010
changes
ANALYSIS OF NAPLAN DATA
In year 3 numeracy the percentage of students reaching national minimum standards was
pleasing and above that of like schools. Results in year 3 reading and grammar and
punctuation were certainly lower than expected and an area that will need further
investigation and monitoring. The improvement in year 3 spelling is positive as this has
been a focus area for P-2 in 2011.
Numeracy, writing and reading in year 5 achieved excellent results. Our result for year 5
writing was higher than like schools and continues to be strength. Grammar and punctuation
and spelling are highlighted as areas to focus on for improvement.
It is important to note that 13 LNSLN students (8.7% of year 3 & 5 cohort)) who are funded
for serve language are included in our school results.
School Community and Student Wellbeing
Goals and Intended Outcomes
In 2011 our goals in School Community and Student Wellbeing were:
To sustain a strong school community where people feel connected, where relationships are
built on mutual trust and a deep respect for each other, and where everyone is safe, cared for
and happy.
In 2011, we intended to meet this goal through:
Continuing to build an engaged, committed and resilient staff
Reach out to and promote the importance of families and their positive impact on the
school
Empowering students to be confident, resilient and happy at school
Promoting better behaviour through deeper engagement in their learning
Achievements
STUDENT ATTENDANCE RATE 93.9%
VALUE ADDED
There has been an emphasis across the school to educate students, teachers and parents
about the importance of students regularly attending school and being punctual to class so
as to maximise the learning potential for each student. Attendance at school is a key
ingredient in ensuring a students success. It is also important that wherever possible, family
holidays are taken during school vacations. It was pleasing to see that student attendance
increased from 91.5% in 2010 to 93.9% in 2011.
Term 2 saw the senior school musical production ‘Kids at Sea’
performed on two consecutive nights. This was well attended
with 96% of families in attendance with over 500 present in the
audience at each production. We were delighted to have
residents from our neighbouring aged care facility attend
rehearsals. The idea of two entire casts gave students greater
opportunity to have more lead roles and for each student to be
seen more easily by their family members in the audience. All
stakeholders were pleased with this new initiative and the fact
that our production could be performed in our local neighbourhood.
The senior students had a consistent involvement with the residents from the aged care
facility through weekly visits each Monday afternoon. On these days our students could
interact with and entertain the residents. Many parents accompany the students each week
to Bupa. They also had a weekly knitting club at lunchtime when students and parents made
rugs for the nursing home under the leadership of a core group of parents. The BUPA
coordinator in liaison with the school coordinator organised a Special Dance programme for
a number of students to participate in this programme and support residents in keeping fit
and having fun.
2011 saw the Mary MacKillop Café open as a drop in coffee and chat venue during school
hours. Regular parent workshops were offered in the areas of crafts and cooking and were
greatly appreciated by those who attended.
Mary MacKillop Primary School, Narre Warren Nth
STUDENT SATISFACTION
In Term 3 students were involved in age appropriate playground surveys. The focus was to
gather knowledge and evidence of the students’ thoughts and feelings about playing in the
playground. The majority of the students indicated they felt safe and confident in the
playground and if they had problems they knew who to go to, to address the issue though
sometimes a few mentioned they didn’t want to stop play to report it. Students were
generally confident that issues were followed up by staff but sometimes they felt teachers
didn’t tell them the outcome of the issue. Many students made mention of the fact that
teachers had walkie talkies, wore bright vests and had first aid bags and that help was
quickly available if there was a problem. Senior students enjoyed the playground and still
found things to do. Many students commented verbally, in writing or through their drawings
about enjoying the playground equipment, the open space and the freedom to play in all
areas. Some senior students made suggestions on how the playground could be improved
and one of the suggestions was to have more seating around the school.
PARENT SATISFACTION
The school offered a parent education program entitled “Think U Know Internet Safety
Session’ which was attended by a large group of parents. The cyber smart information
evening was presented to assist parents in teaching their children how to develop protective
and responsible behaviours when communicating online. Digital citizenship requires vital
values that our students need to learn to operate in today’s world.
The prep and junior concert was well attended with over 500 parents, grandparents and
family members present at both performances. On leaving the hall many positive comments
were made by the parent community. One that was repeatedly heard was ‘I didn’t realise
little ones could be so talented’.
SRC insight data reveals parent satisfaction with the school is good with an overall 66% (with
the highest score in the state being 80%) of parents happy with the school.
Both school board and friends of Mary Mackillop meetings are well attended by our parent
community. Feedback from these parent bodies, along with active parent involvement in the
school indicates a general satisfaction from parents.
The Disco, BBQ and market night was very well attended by the staff and parent community.
The Hall, Gym, and BBQ area were seen to be at full capacity at all times.
Goals and Intended Outcomes
In 2011 our goals in Leadership and Stewardship were:
To support and develop each persons potential for leadership by ensuring that those
organizational structures and processes needed for leadership to flourish at all levels are in
place.
To improve and maintain the buildings, grounds and school facilities so as to better meet the
current and future needs of the school community.
In 2011 we intended to meet these goals through:
Further improvements are made to ICT infrastructure and hardware
DESCRIPTION OF PL UNDERTAKEN IN 2011
In 2011 the development and implementation of a whole staff professional learning project
that focused on student learning and the performance and development culture (PDC) of
the school, established itself as a very positive learning tool for teachers. This initiative was
the major focus of the professional learning for all staff.
Two major new initiatives for the project in 2011 included all teachers making collegial visits
to observe the teaching of other colleagues, to assist them to learn about their own goals.
Secondly teachers met each term with the four members of the Executive Leadership team
to reflect on and receive feedback on their practice and their individual learning goals.
The theme of the project is ‘From dependency to empowerment, surface thinking to deeper
thinking, and abstract to action’. The themes are the purpose or ‘lenses’ to focus the
learning of staff and were collaboratively decided by staff to focus on what our students
need in order to be powerful learners.
The goal of the project is to engage staff in a student learning focused action research
project that aspires to:
1. Have staff and students critically exploring and practically engaging with the
concepts comprising the project theme
2. Improve student learning
3. Achieve better focused and personalized professional learning
4. Improve staff and student involvement in decision making
5. Enhance the performance and development culture of the school
The work of the project was undertaken using action research model with all teachers using
a learning journal to record their learning goals, actions and reflections. School closure
days, individual learning plans, workshops, professional learning team meetings and a
project management team were used to facilitate the learning.
TEACHER SATISFACTION
In 2011 all teachers were involved in an online
survey conducted by the CECV entitled School
Improvement Framework Strategy – Performance
and Development Culture Questionnaire. The
results of this survey were very pleasing and
indicated that the school could apply as having
accreditation as a Performance and Development
Culture School. The Project Management Team
has opted to do this in 2012. The results indicated
that staff had a very positive view of their own and
the school’s professional learning:-
Teachers actively belong to many professional networks throughout the Diocese and
Special Interest Teams which continue to develop their professional expertise, enable
them to share their talents, learn from colleagues and provide additional opportunities for
students. Teachers feel that their own individual learning plans are informed by the
learning outcomes of their students (92.8%) and their own analysis of their teaching in
relation to a set of teaching Standards (96.5%).
The school is blessed with a generous, hard working and dedicated staff. Their support
for each other, our students and our families is evidenced in a variety of ways on a daily
basis.
Staff members continue to be appreciative of the buildings, resources and equipment
that they have available to them to assist them in their work. They are particularly
grateful to the parent body for the many ways that parents support teachers and students
in the classrooms, on excursions, at sporting events, by their attendance at school
events, their outstanding fundraising efforts and their work on committees.
ACARA school-level income reporting requirements which are to be reported on the MySchool website later this year. ACARA
school level reporting requirements will require system level income from Government grants and some private income to be
allocated by school. This will be a small adjustment in relation to the total level of school resources. At this stage, recurrent income
from Government sources, school generated income and capital expenditure are to be reported by schools. Additionally when
assessing the private income of the school include both recurrent and capital school fees.
