Denis LaClare: “Originally from Canada,<br />
I have worked with Cru (formerly<br />
Campus Crusade) for 25 years. Currently<br />
my wife Vickie and I minister to<br />
international students in the Pacific<br />
Southwest. I give leadership to our 20+<br />
staff in the region. We have three kids:<br />
Jesse (16), Mia (11) and Will (7) and<br />
reside in Bakersfield, CA. My research<br />
interests lie in the area of cross-cultural<br />
missionary preparation and worldview<br />
acquisition.”<br />
David Ofumbi: “Team Leader of<br />
Leadership Development Initiative Africa<br />
(LEADIA). I am from Uganda and my<br />
wife, Anne Nyarangi, is from Kenya. We<br />
have two daughters, Tehilah and<br />
Taleesa Jan. My research interest is in<br />
the influence of followership on<br />
Brett Molter: “I am married and have 4<br />
beautiful boys, ages 15, 13, 11, and 8. I<br />
have just recently returned from<br />
missionary work in Senegal, West<br />
Africa. My current research interests<br />
include the interpretation of rituals<br />
involved in death ceremonies of the<br />
Senegalese as well as the influence of<br />
a syncretic belief system in their<br />
perception of death and the afterlife.”<br />
Jeffrey Waligora: “I lead my wife and<br />
3 children as we have been living and<br />
serving in East Asia since 1997. My<br />
research interest is in the area of<br />
training up national workers for more<br />
effective cross-cultural ministry.”<br />
Rose Waligora: “I am an almost-2ndgeneration,<br />
Korean-American who
leadership.<br />
Jane Rhoades: “My husband and I live<br />
in Southern California and have one<br />
adult son and two granddaughters in<br />
Missouri. We continue to serve in training<br />
and member care in Africa under Youth<br />
With A Mission, so I want to focus my<br />
research on multicultural missions<br />
training in Africa.”<br />
Sao “Susanna” Sio: “I am from Hong<br />
Kong. I am the 5th kid of 9 children at<br />
home. I would like to do my research<br />
work on intercultural team building and<br />
dynamics from a Chinese perspective.<br />

grew up in Detroit and now ministers<br />
with my husband and three children in<br />
East Asia. My research interest is in<br />
the area of women serving crossculturally<br />
and how to encourage and<br />
help them bridge the gap from effective<br />

Doctor of Missiology<br />
Lisa MacEwen: “I was born and raised<br />
in Korea but have lived in the U.S. for<br />
the major part of my life. . . . We are<br />
missionaries with Cru (a.k.a. Campus<br />
Crusade for Christ). We have served in<br />
a restricted-access country in East Asia<br />
and are now serving in Singapore. My<br />
husband is a faculty member at East<br />
Asia School of Theology, and I minister<br />
there as well. We have an eight-yearold<br />
daughter. We are truly an<br />
international family: I am Korean, my<br />
husband is American, and our daughter<br />
is Chinese (adopted). My research<br />
interest is in Intercultural Mentoring.”<br />
Francis Nwobu: “My name is Francis<br />
Chukwudozie Nwobu, and just as the<br />
Apostle Paul was a Hebrew and a<br />
Roman citizen, I am an Ibo from<br />
southern Nigeria and an American<br />
citizen. My wife's name is Clara, a<br />
missionary like me and an RN . . . we<br />
have 4 children. My first born,<br />
Emmanuel, is 29 and a veteran who<br />
served in Iraq. Our daughters are<br />
Goodness, 27 and a physics graduate<br />
in a master's program; Faith, 24 and a<br />
biology graduate, pursuing a master's<br />
degree in Public Health; and Victory,<br />
21 and attending Cerritos College. My<br />
research interest includes an<br />
empathetic response to the prosperity<br />
gospel in southern Nigeria.”

Our first <strong>Doctoral</strong> Research Group [DRG] of the semester will meet this Friday,<br />
September 28, 2012, from 12:30–2:00 PM in Marshburn 1 on the Biola campus. This<br />
is an informal gathering to discuss items of interest and relevance to the CSICS doctoral<br />

Candidacy<br />
Official PhD candidacy indicates that students have completed all of the preliminary<br />
requirements and are now qualified to undertake original research contributing to<br />
scholarship in their respective fields through their doctoral dissertations.<br />
It is the responsibility of students to contact their advisors in order to ensure all candidacy<br />
requirements have been met. Upon completion of the requirements, students will be notified<br />
of their acceptance to candidacy. Upon achieving candidacy, students may implement<br />
their proposed research plans under the supervision of the approved doctoral<br />
chairperson.<br />
To achieve candidacy, students must successfully complete the following:<br />
1. Required coursework and the Graduation Procedures Check (or grad check);<br />
2. Portfolio, approved by the doctoral committee;<br />
3. Qualifying exam; and<br />
4. Successful defense of the dissertation proposal.<br />
