PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
Purpose: To provide current information on infectious diseases based on requests
from attendees of the 2011 Infectious Diseases conference.
Objectives: At the end of this program the participant should be able to:
• Describe the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and treatment of Clostridium difficile
infection (CDI) and intervention strategies in the prevention and control of a CDI outbreak
in the hospital setting
• Describe the history of sepsis and approaches to treatment and identify current clinical
investigations, emerging concepts and implications for future approaches to prevention
and treatment.
• Explain how antimicrobial susceptibility tests can play an essential role in the clinical
management of infectious diseases
• Describe the prevalence of nosocomial infection in the ICU and the evaluation of fever in
ICU patients to discriminate infectious from non-infectious etiologies
• Discuss the utility of measuring procalcitonin levels for clinical decision-making
• Review the indications and new recommendations for use of human papillomavirus vaccines
