PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES<br />

Purpose: To provide current in<strong>for</strong>mation on infectious diseases based on requests<br />

from attendees of <strong>the</strong> 2011 Infectious Diseases conference.<br />

Objectives: At <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>this</strong> program <strong>the</strong> participant should be able to:<br />

• Describe <strong>the</strong> pathophysiology, clinical manifestations and treatment of Clostridium difficile<br />

infection (CDI) and intervention strategies in <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>event</strong>ion and control of a CDI outbreak<br />

in <strong>the</strong> hospital setting<br />

• Describe <strong>the</strong> history of sepsis and approaches to treatment and identify current clinical<br />

investigations, emerging concepts and implications <strong>for</strong> future approaches to pr<strong>event</strong>ion<br />

and treatment.<br />

• Explain how antimicrobial susceptibility tests can play an essential role in <strong>the</strong> clinical<br />

management of infectious diseases<br />

• Describe <strong>the</strong> prevalence of nosocomial infection in <strong>the</strong> ICU and <strong>the</strong> evaluation of fever in<br />

ICU patients to discriminate infectious from non-infectious etiologies<br />

• Discuss <strong>the</strong> utility of measuring procalcitonin levels <strong>for</strong> clinical decision-making<br />

• Review <strong>the</strong> indications and new recommendations <strong>for</strong> use of human papillomavirus vaccines<br />
