Coming off a smarting
loss in the November
presidential election, the
Republican National
Committee on Monday
released a set of recommendations
to “revitalize”
the party, calling for
changes in every element
of the organization. NRC
said its “message was
weak,” its “ground game
was insufficient,” it was
lacking in “data and digital,”
and the party’s “debate
process needed
improvement.”
Sunday, the sheriff’s department
found 2,000
pounds of marijuana estimated
at $4 million street
value scattered in bales
and near a 30-foot boat
equipped with 20 fuel containers.
The 50 bales of
bushes near a road leading
from the beach.
Miami-based Burger
King announced on Monday
that it would be rolling
out a new sandwich later
this week: an all-new
turkey burger that comes
with such options as guacamole
and pepper jack
cheese and weighs in at
less than 500 calories.
Company officials said
they hoped the dining
public would gobble up
the new menu item.
Meanwhile, the mayor
who best knows what’s
good for you announced
on Monday that legislation
was in the works to prohibit
the public showing of
tobacco products as “such
displays suggest smoking
is normal and will invite
young people to experiment
with tobacco.” The
new effort to enforce
health by New York City
Marty Harrill’s
Michael Bloomberg came
only days after a judge shot
down the mayor’s recent
ban on super-sized sugary
soft drinks.
From the wide and
wacky world of weather,
forecasters on Monday
said a late-season winter
storm was predicted to
bring snow, ice, and even
blizzards from the Northern
Plains to New England
by Wednesday, the first
day of spring. At the same
time, the Aurora Borealis,
or “the Northern Lights,”
was spotted on Monday
over St. Cloud, Minnesota,
and could be seen as far
south as Colorado.
In sports, Louisville
took the overall top seed
in the NCAA basketball
Sunday, followed by three
The second tier was
Duke, Georgetown, Ohio
participants: Florida
(third), Missouri (ninth),
and Ole Miss (12th). Now,
the big question: Where’s
Kicking for Kancer!
Eagle Karate’s Kick-a-Thon Huge Success
Tulli Cole
The thump of feet battering
hefty bags, the resounding
echo of an
intense kiai, tumultuous
shouts of encouragement,
small but fiery shows of
courage and unflinching
tenacity, the final tally of a
sought-for goal…
This was the exciting
backdrop found within
the training halls of Eagle
Karate in Madisonville on
March 14. For from the
time the bell tolled six, a
myriad of young men and
women tightened their
belts, set aide their sneakers,
and rose up to meet a
most worthy of challenges.
The “Kicking for
Kancer” event.
The Eagle Karate Family
Center is but one dojo
of several, all passing along
the wisdom of the Eagle
Karate System. It is a
power-based system, requiring
dedication and
regimentation, and
teaches eight different
styles of martial arts. But
it is also a Christian and
ministry-based system. Its
mission is to develop its
students as strong people,
unconfined by rigid standards,
driven instead by
confidence and generosity.
The school prepares those
who walk through its
doors not just for potential
violence, but also for life.
Little wonder, then,
that the folks of Eagle
Karate are very much a
community-oriented
group. If it is a cause
meant to benefit the local
area, these high-flying guys
and gals are never far away
from the action.
More often than not,
they are in the very thick
of it.
“This is not a business
to me,” said Master G.L.
“Larry” Hartsook, the
chief instructor of Eagle
Karate. “It’s a passion.
We’re here to serve the
people.”
To that end, Eagle
Karate has overseen,
sponsored, or taken part
in various fundraisers for
over twenty-five years.
And for the past two
years, one of those
fundraisers has been the
adventure known simply
as “Kicking for Kancer.”
This annual event raises
money for Relay for Life,
and each and every penny
earned by the Eagle
Karate students goes towards
the organization’s
ongoing work to put an
end to cancer.
It is a battle Master
Hartsook knows all too
well. His wife and fellow
instructor, Becky Hartsook,
passed away in 2011
after a heroic struggle
against pancreatic cancer.
Team Becky—the name
the Eagle Karate family
chose to use in their efforts
to aid the Monroe
County branch of Relay
for Life—was so named in
her honor.
And Team Becky has
certainly given ole Cancer
a windmill kick to the
face!
Literally!
That is because “Kicking
for Kancer” is a kick-athon.
The young students
collect and raise money,
and then they take part in
a true feat of endurance.
They must kick, without
ever pausing for a chance
to readjust their balance or
stance, for as long as they
possible can. Any style of
kick, be it a jump-kick or
a side-kick, is accepted, so
long as the student is able
to keep it up.
It is not nearly as easy
as it sounds. The kick-athon
is—and, indeed,
was—a strenuous workout,
demanding not only a
fair amount of strength
and willpower, but also
outright moxie.
And moxie these young
students had, and in full.
“All these kids…” said
Master Hartsook, smiling.
“They are highly disciplined,
dedicated to purpose
and self.”
The students did not
prove him wrong. For
hours they kicked, again
and again, pounding away
at the pads. They fought
through exhaustion,
strained muscles, bruises
and sweat, and even some
mangled, bloodied toes.
Not once did they did not
call it quits, stopping only
when their bodies could
take no more.
They did all of this, and
all in the name of Team
Becky, for the Relay for
Life, fighting with all their
might for those in need of
As a plan came forth to
seize depositors’ funds to
satisfy austerity demands
from the euro zone on
Monday, citizens of
Cyprus rushed to pull
their money out of the
country’s banks, a move
that sparked the closing of
the banks until at least
Thursday. Granting a request
to give Cyprus a $13
billion bailout, the Brussels-based
euro zone demanded
levies that would
take between 6.75 and 9.9
percent of all bank deposits,
a requirement that
elicited an angry response
from Russian President
Vladamir Putin, whose
nation’s oligarch reportedly
had $19 billion secretly
deposited in Cyprus
banks.
In a daring daylight escape
from a jail northwest
of Montreal on Sunday,
two Quebec inmates
climbed a rope into a hovering
helicopter that was
later tracked to Mont-
Tremblant, 53 miles away.
On Monday, authorities
arrested four men 30 miles
north of the Saint-Jerome
jail from which the inmates
escaped, two of the
men being the escaped
convicts.
A joint operation underway
for weeks by Syrian
rebels and Turkish
officials led to the arrest
on Monday of a male accused
of killing a New
York City woman last
month in Istanbul. The
governor of Istanbul said
the suspect had confessed
Around The globe
to the death of Sarai
Sierra, whose beaten body
turned up in the city on
February 2 after she went
missing while on vacation.
Meanwhile, on Monday,
Syrian opposition
leaders met to form an interim
government that
would provide services to
citizens living in areas of
the country now controlled
by rebel fighters.
The effort was the most
serious threat to President
Bashar al-Assad, analysts
said, pointing to the formation
of a rival administration
that would unite all
factions on the ground
fighting for his overthrow.
Sweden’s Stockholm
International Peace Research
Institute said on
Monday that China had
overtaken Britain as the
world’s fifth-largest arms
exporter, citing data collected
from 2008 to 2012.
The giant Asian country,
however, still lagged far
behind the United States,
the leader with 30 percent
of global arms exports, followed
by Russia with 27
percent, Germany with
Egyptian vigilantes beat
Sunday, a week after the
nation’s attorney general’s
office encouraged civilians
to arrest lawbreakers and
hand them over to police.
Officials said the men died
while upside down, an example
of the chaos sweeping
the country and
another sign of the nation’s
frightening security
breakdown.
And according to
(Continued from pg 1)
Dale Vance, 18, of Marvin
Akins Road, Madisonville.
According to Jones, a
female who owned a 1996
Ford truck on Friday reported
the vehicle as
stolen a day earlier. She
said Vance took it without
her consent.
Additionally, she valued
the truck at $1,000.
Jones said that on Sunday
members of the
Maryville Police Department
located Vance and
the truck on Sevierville
Road. Vance was detained
until the arrival of Jones,
who said he then arrested
him.
