Kicking for Kancer! 

Eagle Karate’s Kick-a-Thon Huge Success

The thump of feet battering 

hefty bags, the resounding 

echo of an 

intense kiai, tumultuous 

shouts of encouragement, 

small but fiery shows of 

courage and unflinching 

tenacity, the final tally of a 

sought-for goal… 

This was the exciting 

backdrop found within 

the training halls of Eagle 

Karate in Madisonville on 

March 14. For from the 

time the bell tolled six, a 

myriad of young men and 

women tightened their 

belts, set aide their sneakers, 

and rose up to meet a 

most worthy of challenges. 

The “Kicking for 

Kancer” event. 

The Eagle Karate Family 

Center is but one dojo 

of several, all passing along 

the wisdom of the Eagle 

Karate System. It is a 

power-based system, requiring 

dedication and 

regimentation, and 

teaches eight different 

styles of martial arts. But 

it is also a Christian and 

ministry-based system. Its 

mission is to develop its 

students as strong people, 

unconfined by rigid standards, 

driven instead by 

confidence and generosity. 

The school prepares those 

who walk through its 

doors not just for potential 

violence, but also for life. 

Little wonder, then, 

that the folks of Eagle 

Karate are very much a 

community-oriented 

group. If it is a cause 

meant to benefit the local 

area, these high-flying guys 

and gals are never far away 

from the action. 

More often than not, 

they are in the very thick 

of it. 

“This is not a business 

to me,” said Master G.L. 

“Larry” Hartsook, the 

chief instructor of Eagle 

Karate. “It’s a passion. 

We’re here to serve the 

people.” 

To that end, Eagle 

Karate has overseen, 

sponsored, or taken part 

in various fundraisers for 

over twenty-five years. 

And for the past two 

years, one of those 

fundraisers has been the 

adventure known simply 

as “Kicking for Kancer.” 

This annual event raises 

money for Relay for Life, 

and each and every penny 

earned by the Eagle 

Karate students goes towards 

the organization’s 

ongoing work to put an 

end to cancer. 

It is a battle Master 

Hartsook knows all too 

well. His wife and fellow 

instructor, Becky Hartsook, 

passed away in 2011 

after a heroic struggle 

against pancreatic cancer. 

Team Becky—the name 

the Eagle Karate family 

chose to use in their efforts 

to aid the Monroe 

County branch of Relay 

for Life—was so named in 

her honor. 

And Team Becky has 

certainly given ole Cancer 

a windmill kick to the 

face! 

Literally! 

That is because “Kicking 

for Kancer” is a kick-athon. 

The young students 

collect and raise money, 

and then they take part in 

a true feat of endurance. 

They must kick, without 

ever pausing for a chance 

to readjust their balance or 

stance, for as long as they

possible can. Any style of 

kick, be it a jump-kick or 

a side-kick, is accepted, so 

long as the student is able 

to keep it up. 

It is not nearly as easy 

as it sounds. The kick-athon 

is—and, indeed, 

was—a strenuous workout, 

demanding not only a 

fair amount of strength 

and willpower, but also 

outright moxie. 

And moxie these young 

students had, and in full. 

“All these kids…” said 

Master Hartsook, smiling. 

“They are highly disciplined, 

dedicated to purpose 

and self.” 

The students did not 

prove him wrong. For 

hours they kicked, again 

and again, pounding away 

at the pads. They fought 

through exhaustion, 

strained muscles, bruises 

and sweat, and even some 

mangled, bloodied toes. 

Not once did they did not 

call it quits, stopping only 

when their bodies could 

take no more. 

They did all of this, and 

all in the name of Team 

Becky, for the Relay for 

Life, fighting with all their 

might for those in need of

the vehicle as 

stolen a day earlier. She 

said Vance took it without 

her consent. 

Additionally, she valued 

the truck at $1,000. 

Jones said that on Sunday 

members of the 

Maryville Police Department 

located Vance and 

the truck on Sevierville 

Road. Vance was detained 

until the arrival of Jones, 

who said he then arrested
