News from Mount St. Joseph – Summer 2012
Welcome Sister Anna Maria
This past April, Sr. Anna Maria Bilotta became the new Mother Superior of
Mount St. Joseph. Sister Anna Maria came from Iztapalapa, Mexico, where
she served as the Mother Superior of Casa Guadalupe and was responsible for
the community of Amozoc Puebla and the community of Guadalajara.
Sister Anna Maria is originally from Italy and has been a Daughter of Saint
Mary of Providence for 38 years. She has held a number of positions within the
DSMP community. When Sr. Anna Maria first came to the United States in
1978, she worked with disabled children in Elverson, Pennsylvania. In 1981,
she went to Vancouver, Canada to open a new apostolate. There, Sr. Anna
Maria worked in the parish as CCD coordinator, and was responsible for the
youth group, liturgy planning and taught in the parish school. In 2002, Sr.
Anna Maria was sent to Elverson, Pennsylvania to serve as the Superior at the
St. Mary of Providence Center. After serving in Elverson, she went on to work
in Milbank, South Dakota, and from there she went to Iztapalapa, Mexico.
And now, we are blessed to have Sr. Anna Maria here at Mount St. Joseph!
As Executive Director of Mount St. Joseph, Sr. Anna Maria recognizes that, while Mount St. Joseph is a very nice
place with a welcoming staff and residents, it is also a very big place with much work that must be tended to.
Sister Anna Maria plans to continue the work of Sr. Gertrude and looks forward to “establishing a family
atmosphere and a spirit of collaboration amongst the staff and Sisters.”
Sister Anna Maria would like to thank everyone for welcoming her with “all her strengths and weaknesses.” She
happily anticipates working with the Mount St. Joseph community “to continue God’s work together.”
Look To The Mount Summer 2012
From the Administrator . . .
Hello again to all the friends and supporters of Mount St. Joseph!
We hope your summer is going well and that you are able to keep cool and safe!
The past few months have been (as all months seem to be) busy. We were able to complete the renovations to
the new Sacred Heart residence and to obtain IDPH approval for occupancy for June 21. The ladies from St.
Aloysius residence moved in Sunday, July 8 after Mass. Staff and families were excited. The ladies were a
little bewildered by all the change, but most of them moved in easily to their new and much more
accommodating home.
We built a gazebo for the residents of the new Sacred Heart so they could enjoy some outdoor time (when it’s
not 100 degrees out!).
And we started fixing the back part of our driveway.
These, as are all of our capital improvement projects, were able to become reality due to the generosity of
friends, families and benefactors and we all – Sisters, ladies and staff – pray for each of you, asking God to bless
you as generously as you’ve blessed us!
May God bless all of you, your family and friends. Keep yourselves cool, well hydrated (drink plenty of fluids)
and safe this summer. Whenever you have the chance, stop by for a visit. The ladies are always ready to
welcome a chance to show off their wonderful home!
~ Sister Esther Leroux
News from the State Regarding Public Act 097-0689
On July 12, we received notice regarding Public Act 097-0689, which Governor Quinn signed into effect June
14, 2012 and which took effect July 1, 2012.
What the act includes is this line that directly affects us at the Mount:
“Payment for bed reserve has been discontinued for all long term care residents with the exception of
ICF/DD residents under the age of 21 years.”
In other words, as of July 1, any time you take your loved one home for the weekend, picking her up Friday
and bringing her back Sunday, we will not be getting paid for Saturday. Anytime a resident goes home for a
family vacation of a week or more or goes home for Christmas holidays, we will not be getting paid for any
days she is not here from midnight to midnight.
Our per diem (daily rate of cost per resident) is $129.85 so through the course of a year, we will be losing a
significant amount of money (approximately $200,000 a year) for all our ladies that go home regularly. This is
a grave concern to us and we need your help to come up with a workable solution.
~ Sister Esther Leroux
In Recognition and Appreciation . . .
On April 19 th , Sr. Gertrude LaBarbera left Mount St.
Joseph to become Mother Superior at the St. Mary of
Providence Center in Elverson, Pennsylvania. Sister
Gertrude had been the Mother Superior of Mount St. Joseph
since November of 2004. During her tenure as Executive
Director, the Mount experienced many exciting endeavors
including, for example, the construction of St. Clare
residence and two gazebos, the renovation of Sacred Heart
residence, the Chapel passageway, and the Administration
Building’s front office and reception areas, and the
reinstatement of the quarterly newsletter.
While Sr. Gertrude will be missed, the fruits of her efforts
will serve as reminders of her work and commitment to the
Mount St. Joseph community. It is with much gratitude that
we wish Sr. Gertrude all the best as she continues to do
God’s work in Elverson.
_____________________________
This June, Sr. Gianna Spizzirri retired from her duties at
Mount St. Joseph. Sr. Gianna has been at Mount St. Joseph
for 24 years – the first 16 of which she served as
housemother for St. Joseph residence. For the past eight
years, Sr. Gianna has been working around the Mount
wherever and whenever she was needed.
Sr. Gianna was born in Calabria, Italy and in 1950, she
began her novitiate as a Daughter of St. Mary of Providence
in Como. Sr. Gianna first came to the United States to serve
at Elverson, Pennsylvania, where she worked for ten years
before coming to the Mount.
Currently, Sr. Gianna lives at Queen of Peace where she is
happy to report that she “feels good” although she “misses
the ladies and their families.” We are grateful for Sr. Gianna
and all her many years of work and dedication to the Mount
St. Joseph community and we wish her many blessings in
her retirement.
Look To The Mount Summer 2012
Time is a Gift
Time is precious because it is a gift from God. He gives us time here on Earth so that we can prepare
ourselves for eternity. In today’s society, many of our actions are controlled by time. You cannot see time,
yet we use the clock to gauge where we should be and what we should be doing. Have you ever wondered
how many years you have left on Earth? Or how much time you have lost and wasted away?
One hot morning, as I walked alongside the ladies, I realized I had to hurry in order to be on time for
Prayers. Just like clockwork, one of the ladies turned to me and said, “Sister, today’s Thursday, it’s time for
Holy Hour! Don’t you have Holy Hour today, Sister?” As I walked towards the Chapel for Holy Hour, a
little smile found its way to my face. I thought, “boy, these ladies truly do not know how to waste time.”
Within their lives they seem to value the preciousness and the fleetingness of time. Time, for them, is so
very important that they know better than to waste it in worry, anxiousness, sadness, indecision or seeking
material comfort. Even in times of sickness or facing death they have a certain serenity. Their beautiful
example makes me think about how I should embrace unconditionally my remaining time striving to do
God’s will.
Time is so precious for our ladies because they know how to enjoy and fulfill the purpose of their lives. They
set a good example by lovingly using their precious time enjoying their family and loved ones. They
especially look forward to going to workshop, recreating, coloring, helping, attending church service, going
out to eat, etc. They use the time they have now by living happily and lovingly.
Time is too precious a gift to waste, and what we do with that time is totally up to us. We can spend it
joyfully or wastefully. As we cannot rewind the clock and we cannot catch up with time no matter how fast
we run, why not spend a little time each day seeking the real meaning of our lives. Let us learn from our
residents because once the preciousness of life is gone we have no more to do with time.
Employee Spotlight
Debbie Evans and Debbie Gaskell
This year, the Mount St. Joseph Association recognized the milestone anniversaries of employees Debbie Evans
(25 years) and Debbie Gaskell (20 years).
Debbie Evans, a resident of Fox River Grove and a mother of
two grown children (Robbie and Robin), began working at the
Mount as a part time “laundry mistress.” Debbie eventually went
on from that post to become a full time habilitation aide and has
served at various residences and worked with a number of the
Sisters including: Angel Guardian with Sr. Stella; Sacred Heart
with Sr. Josephine; St. Al’s with Sr. Madonna; and currently at
St. Clare with Sr. Mercy. Debbie has many fond memories of her
years at the Mount and shares that the Mount is like a “second
home” to her.
Indeed, the Mount St. Joseph community has been an important
part of Debbie’s personal life. Debbie remembers working with
Sr. Stella Forini, who was the house mother at Angel Guardian
and her children’s catechism teacher at Saints Peter and Paul’s
Church in Cary. Debbie’s husband, Bob, would take Robbie and
Robin to see Sr. Stella for religious instruction for their First Holy
Communion. Debbie shares that it was a great joy to have Sr.
Stella and some of the Mount St. Joseph ladies present at her
children’s First Communion Mass and the party that followed at
her home.
The Mount St. Joseph community was also an important presence in Debbie’s life when, in 1987, she was
involved in a very serious car crash. The crash left Debbie comatose and with a severe head injury. As she lay
in the ICU, Sr. Bernardine, who was the Mother Superior at Mount St. Joseph at the time, was able to bring to
Debbie a relic of the Blessed Guanella, and the Sisters and the Mount St. Joseph community began to pray for
Debbie’s healing. Debbie believes her survival and miraculous recovery was through the intercession of Blessed
Guanella. Today Debbie shares that she “lives her life always thanking God.”
We are grateful to Debbie for her years of service to Mount St. Joseph and wish her many more years of joy
working with the ladies. We also want to wish her the best when she celebrates another important anniversary
this December 5th—that of 42 years of marriage!
Look To The Mount Summer 2012
While Debbie Gaskell celebrated her 20 th anniversary at Mount St.
Joseph this year, Debbie’s work and affiliation with the Mount goes
back more than 30 years.
Debbie started working at the Mount in St. Joseph’s residence and
then was asked to start a ceramics class. Debbie loved teaching the
ladies ceramics and, in the early 1990s, she was even able to design
her own ceramics classroom in the DT Center—complete with a
kiln.
Debbie left the Mount for a short time to pursue other employment,
but she quickly realized she “couldn’t stay away.” She returned in
1992 and continued her work in recreation. Throughout the years,
Debbie’s work and roles have varied greatly. In addition to creating
the ceramics program, she has served as a hab aide and activity
director and worked on the payroll program. Along with these roles,
Debbie has also been responsible for driving the St. Mary’s bus, the
“airport runs” and the DT bus.
Debbie’s fond memories of Mount St. Joseph go back as far as when she was nine years old. In those days, she
would come to Mount St. Joseph on the weekends and roller skate through the residence hallways and visit the
ladies and the dogs that lived in the residences. One of Debbie’s favorite memories was the 1981 Guanellian fest
when everyone went to Elverson, Pennsylvania for one week of pure fun. According to Debbie, the activities
included the Staff vs. Sisters in a game of tug of war in which the staff won and the Sisters were full of mud!
Currently, Debbie’s responsibilities at the Mount include payroll and technical support which, among many
things, includes getting this newsletter out both by email and regular mail. Needless to say, with these duties,
Debbie is quite popular with the Mount St. Joseph staff and it is very typical to see a queue of people outside her
office in need of some help or answers to all sorts of questions. Debbie enjoys working and helping others and
getting involved in problem solving, especially when it comes to numbers or anything technical.
Along with anything technical, most especially anything “Apple,” Debbie enjoys working with cast-off computers
which she restores and donates. Debbie is also an avid reader and, when she is not reading, she is busy tending
her two Jack Russell Terriers – Lady Jane and Oliver, her cat – George, and her many Seahorses which she breeds
and raises.
We are grateful for Debbie’s many skills, talents and interests that have greatly benefited the Mount St. Joseph
community for so many years. We wish her all the best on her special anniversary!
Welcome, Sr. Marcella Ferrari
This July, the Mount St. Joseph Community welcomed the
arrival of Sr. Marcella Ferrari. Originally from Italy, Sr.
Marcella joins us from St. Mary of Providence in Chicago,
where she worked for 38 years as seamstress for the entire
North American Province. Here at the Mount, Sr. Marcella
continues to sew habits for the Sisters. You can find her busy
at work in her workshop located at St. Al’s residence.
Sister Marcella loves to “keep busy.” When she is not attending to her seamstress duties, she is at work using
her talents sewing purses, quilting and knitting blankets, and beading beautiful Rosaries. It is wonderful to
have Sr. Marcella as part of the Mount St. Joseph Community. On behalf of the Sisters, staff, residents and
their families we welcome her and wish her continued success in all her creative endeavors.
Welcome New Residents -
State Celebrations
On June 30 th , ladies from Marcellina and Guanella residences celebrated the first “state themed” celebration.
Based on previous experience, Sister Esther suggested it might be great fun for the ladies to have monthly
parties based on a theme from each state. Members of the Mount St. Joseph Association agreed and put the
idea into action, starting with the state of Indiana and an “Indy Race Car Event.”
For the event, the Association members decorated the gym with race car themed decorations. There, the ladies
enjoyed a Culver’s lunch, making Indy themed crafts and racing their own “Shake and Go Mattel Cars.” The
ladies had great fun shaking their cars to make them go and then releasing them to race across the finish line.
Everyone received prizes!
This event will be repeated for the other residences. And more state themed events, such as Tennessee, are
planned.
The “Eighties” Ladies of the DT Center
If you stop by Maria Trujillo’s DT classroom early in the morning, you will find a group of ladies gathered
around a table working companionably on some fun activity. What is remarkable about this group is how well
they know and enjoy each other and how proudly they share their ages—all of which are well into their
eighties!
Residents (pictured left to right) Mary Lou Bachman, Hilde Runtz, Cecelia St. Pierre, Alverna Ricke and
Teresa Breitenbeck were delighted to talk about their upcoming birthdays and share a little about themselves:
Hilde is 87 and she is looking forward to turning 88 this December 26 th . Hilde likes to read and enjoys playing
Bingo and listening to music tapes. She also likes to color and play cards with Cecelia.
Alverna is 86 and enjoys reading and coloring. She also likes working on crafts; she especially enjoys making
beaded jewelry. Alverna shares that she likes all her teachers in the DT Center.
Teresa is 84 and wants everyone to know that she is happy, and that her favorite things are music and dancing.
Teresa is especially fond of jewelry—especially pieces that sparkle. Teresa enjoys watching TV and reading
books.
Cecelia is 86 and loves to read books. She enjoys poetry, and especially enjoys writing her own poems.
Cecelia also enjoys playing cards with Hilde.
Mary Lou is 82 and loves to do a puzzle every day. She also likes to read and enjoys singing. Mary Lou loves
coming to the DT Center and looks forward to living in the new Sacred Heart residence.
It was great fun visiting with this special group of women who serve as great reminders of the importance of
staying young at heart!
DT Center Awarded Grant
This month, the Day Training Center was awarded a grant from
The Service Club of Chicago to purchase a “satalight” system.
This “Assistive Technology Interactive Learning Station” is a
very large interactive smart board designed to engage students
with developmental and physical disabilities. The DT program
will use this system for gross motor and basic skills activities. An
early trial of the equipment proved to be very successful with the
DT clients. According to Sr. Esther, many clients responded
enthusiastically to touching the interactive board, “a caterpillar
would crawl across the screen and, if they touched it, it popped!”
We are very grateful to the Service Club of Chicago for providing the funds (approximately $10,000) to purchase
this wonderful technology that will greatly benefit our DT clients. We also want to thank Sr. Mary Walker, Sr.
Esther Leroux, Wendy Wagner, Leslie Bottcher and Debbie Gaskell for their great work preparing the proposal
and power point demonstration for the funding.
The New Sacred Heart Residence
This past June, renovations for the New Sacred Heart residence were completed and, after Mass and a very
exciting ribbon cutting ceremony on July 8 th , residents were able to move into the new building.
The beautiful and well-appointed residence is designed and equipped to be practical, comfortable and
appealing. The new building features two wings—each of which accommodates 12 ladies and is equipped with
its own kitchen, dining area and common room. The new bedrooms are double occupancy and each bedroom
has its own bathroom complete with a whirlpool tub and a ceiling lift.
Sister Madonna reports that, after a very quick period of adjustment, the ladies are enjoying their beautiful new
home.
For the Love of the Ladies
As a joke, someone asked Mount St. Joseph maintenance man, Clyde
Lenzen, if he would ever shave off his beard and hair. In all seriousness,
Clyde responded that he would for a good cause – more specifically, a
donation of $1,000 to the ladies of Mount St. Joseph.
So, at Mik’s Barber Shop in Mundelein, a collection jar with Clyde’s
picture was set up for donations. And, on July 12 th , barber Kim Sukup
came to the Mount complete with scissors, shears and a check for $1,000!
Even though it had been 15 years since Clyde had shaved his beard, he
proved true to his word. The ladies of St. Joseph residence along with the
Sisters and some staff members were on hand to watch as Clyde’s hair hit
the floor.
A big thank you to Clyde, Kim, Mik’s Barber Shop, and the clients at
Mik’s, for such a thoughtful and fun fundraiser. We wish Clyde all the
best in style and comfort with his new look!
Look To The Mount Summer 2012
We appreciate your kind support . . .
The majority of Mount St. Joseph residents and day training clients receive
funding through state and federal programs. The funds are stretched to
cover expenses such as room and board, medication, dental and medical
services, and adequate staffing. Therefore, we rely heavily upon our
benefactors to help provide extra-curricular activities for the residents, to
replace outdated equipment and furniture, and to renovate buildings.
Saint Louis Guanella always said that God will not be outdone in
generosity, and we are convinced that those who assist us in our mission
are blessed in countless ways. The individuals we serve have a beautifully
simple yet profound faith. One can rest assured that God hears and
answers their prayers!
Will you please help us now with whatever financial support you can?
