Six days <strong>of</strong> festivity here and south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

border down Mexico way highlight 1941<br />

convention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Four States<br />

highway association at Mexicali, across <strong>the</strong><br />

line in Baja California, last week in February.<br />

Program ranged from <strong>Desert</strong> Cavalcade<br />

<strong>of</strong> Imperial valley in this city through annual<br />

Mexicali carnival and fishing trip to Punta<br />

Penasco on <strong>the</strong> Gulf <strong>of</strong> California, with visitors<br />

entertained as guests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mexican<br />

government. Alberto Moreno <strong>of</strong> Mexicali<br />

was secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eighth annual session <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> highway association, Harland E. Wells <strong>of</strong><br />

Whitefish, Montana, president.<br />

Independence . . .<br />

Hunters killed 228 lions in California during<br />

1940, and turned in <strong>the</strong> skins for payment<br />

<strong>of</strong> bounty. Ninety-nine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> predators<br />

were males and 120 females. Since 1910, <strong>the</strong><br />

state division <strong>of</strong> fish and game has paid $205,-<br />

100 in bounties on 8,634 lions. Four hunters<br />

are on <strong>the</strong> state payroll now. Jay Bruce,<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fish and game division staff, has 600<br />

lions to his credit since his employment 30<br />

years ago. It is estimated that an adult lion<br />

will kill one deer a week and will destroy<br />

in a year sheep worth $1,000, provided, <strong>of</strong><br />

course <strong>the</strong> varmint is roaming in sheep country.<br />

Federal and state departments <strong>of</strong> agriculture<br />

report favorable conditions for California<br />

cattle, January pasture and range 30<br />

points higher than a year ago and 13 points<br />

above <strong>the</strong> 10-year January average. Mild<br />

wea<strong>the</strong>r has caused remarkable growth <strong>of</strong><br />

feed. Demand for finished beef far exceeds<br />

state supplies <strong>of</strong> fed cattle.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 83 Editor E. A. Skillman <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Eureka Sentinel gives over his desk to<br />

his son Willis, third generation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Skillman<br />

family to conduct <strong>the</strong> newspaper. The<br />

Sentinel was founded by Archibald Skillman<br />

in 1870. When <strong>the</strong> founder died 41 years<br />

ago, his son E. A. succeeded to <strong>the</strong> editorship.<br />

Historic Nevada relics have been placed<br />

on display in <strong>the</strong> basement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state library<br />

building here. Collected at 79 sites in<br />

10 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 17 counties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state, approximately<br />

13,000 objects make up <strong>the</strong> collection,<br />

ranging from skeletal remains <strong>of</strong> prehistoric<br />

people to a £reat variety <strong>of</strong> artifacts.<br />

highway from boat landing in Hemenway<br />

wash on Boulder lake to Vegas wash; improvement<br />

ferry to <strong>the</strong> lake. Las Vegas airport will cost<br />

$375,000. Largest private project for <strong>the</strong><br />
