Amid much speculation and anjdety about the consfruetien and
status of the school's ability to receive students, we feel the school
year is off to a good start. The anticipated disruption and snafus
were avoided and classes began on schedule.
We commend the administration and staff for good planning and
an attitude that smoothed out all the rough spots early.
We would also like to commend the custodial staff for a Job well
done. Several years ago the cleanliness of the high school was
brought under attack during a Middle States Evaluation. We feel
this situation has been completely turned around. Even with the
constant construction, debris, and clutter, our school is dean —
actually cleaner than it has been in the past.
We feel this is an outstanding Job well done.
So, we thank everyone involved for a smooth and pleasant
beginning.
New attendance policy in effect
At ttie beginning of the new school
year, a change was made at OCHS. A
new attendance policy was put Into force
to better comply with the state
regulattflBi attendance policy. The new
policy contain! alterations of the
were made.
Abaences par dan, per semester,
were cut from 18 to 10. When a student
has five absences from one class, a
warning letter Is sent home, B It should
increase to 10 abaences, the student's
neord Is put under review, and without
good reason, such M a medical excuse,
all credits for that class are lost If that
class should happen to be a semester
course, the Mi credits are tost, though a
erceed the aUowed absences.
If a student, on two occasions, is absent
without an excuse from a aunt, he
will receive no credit. When aD credit
from a course la withheld, a student baa
the choice of either staying in class,
school; doubling up on a required course
such as English or gym, or dropping the
dans and going to summer school.
Uat year only about 10 percent on the
student* had trouble with mat attendance
policy. One time of the year
graduating from school until the 110
required school days art fumed, Mr
Ed Woolley believes, "The students wfll
Just have to be more careful about their
absences."
One aspect of the policy that many
students find to be hard to swallow Is the
fact that they are only allowed two early
dismissals per marking period. Without
a note or phone call from home and
proper verification of the early
dismissal, the student's request Is
