Propitious
Tonight (thursdiy at 7:30) is the nl^it for
witches and goblins and other creatures of the
unfettered imagination to take to the main street
of Ocean City for the annual Halloween parade.
a aging area is the 8th Street parking lot on
Asbury Avenue.
Hopefully the parade itself will be the starting
point for some wholesome merriment that may be
Just what the doctor ordered for this fall season
which is perhaps less exhilarating than usual for
those property owners and others on the tocal
scene particularly affected by events of late..
We are speaking specifically about the new
revaluation, which seems to be the main topic of
conversation these days, and the political-legal
drama which wag with us for months and will
seemingly climax on election day Nov. I win the
vote on the local salary referendum (more about
that later).
Without going into a who-struck-John scenario,
Jet it be said simply that there are a lot of us who
can use some frivolity at this point and that
tonight's Halloween parade seems like just the
ticket. It will give us an opportunity to laugh, even
if — especially if — the laughter is brought on by
what, under normal circumstances, would b#
something serious enough to be downright
.frightening.
• : The unknown is the basis of most, if not all,
fear. Remember how E.T. evoked fright, and how
it was only the children who, In their unabashed
innocence, could accept the little creature as a
loving being, even as "wiser" adults came on
strong?
You'll probably see at least one E.T. facsimile
in tonight's parade, as our editorial cartoon
suggests. That other creature pictured is a
Bepublocrat, half Republican elephant and half
Democrat donkey. You may see some of them too.
Editor, Sentinel-Ledger:
Thto to in regard to your
coverage of fee appointment
of Mr, Oliver Mutaky at
MptaJn of the Ocean City
Beach Patrol. Your paper
suggests that thU ap-
pointment hat ••sparked a
•abject of criticism.
•, I think your presentation of
fcete events hat done fee
beach patrol and Its new
• captain a dljservice. Ac-
cordingly, I would like to
make the following ob-
.tervattont.
: .Itseemsappropriate to first
of all attempt to determine
where the criticism It coming
from. It would. Indeed, be a
•erioui matter If there were
critidim coming from the
people who collectively made
the decUlon to appoint Mr,
Mualay. who were mote
people?
Tne outgoing captain, Mr.
George Lafferty, knows man
about the requirements of the
Job and the qualifications of
any individual guard*
available to till that Job ban
anyone else. He recom-
mended Mr. Mutatoy. He did
so knowing full well the other
pe*is on his staff who might
want the job.
Domlnlck Longo, the chief
of police, to whom the captain
of the guarda reports and who
haa to work with the new
captain every day, alto
recommended Mr, Mualay.
Perhapa the criticism wai
coming from the Mr. Kant,
the city admlnlatrator?
Hanuy. He waa the one who
actually did the hiring. The
mayor and City Council alto
patted upon thla appointment
and they too were and are In
Mr. Muialay'a earner.
Nor should there be
anything go surprising about
tbe fact that all these people
Supported Mr, Muislay. They
know his excellent reputation
at a teacher. They know of hU
contribution to the com-
munity over many yean ai a
coach in the city's youth
programs. They know he haa
a history of demonstrated
leadership at a former
president of the the local
Rotary Club and a member of
fee board of directors of the
Community Center.
Moat importantly they know
feat Mr, Muzalay haa more
than 20 yean experience as
second In command of the
Beach Patrol. Are we to
believe there (a something to
controversial about a man
with such credential* getting
the appointment?
What, then, Is the source of
the controveny and critldam
about which we have heard so
much? A* far as can be
determined from reading the
paper, if s coming from one of
the men who m competing
with Mr. Mualay far fee
position.
Although I don't know Um
personally, I understand he U
a bright and articulate college
teacher, a fine lifeguard, well
thought of by the outgoing
captain and certainly always
In contention for the job. He
apparently feela bt didn't get
a proper opportunity to
present Mi case. Othen lay
he wai simply too slow In
getting Ha application In. .
I don't know the merits of
Mi argument. But I do know
Un among those making the
selection there were people
wno were aware of his
legitimate ambition to be fee
new captain. If they bad felt it
in the dty's best Interest to
support Us candidacy, they
could assuredly have done so.
Bit they didn't.
Wat purpose was served
by thla gentleman then going
to the newspaper with fee
suggestion that be was the
more qualified man, even
after the decision had been
made? It's difficult to tee how
ttii helped his cause. Did this
laat-ditch effort somehow help
fee Beach Patrol?
Ifyouare trying toaatlit an
organliatlon that's going
through • period of change,
creating doubt and 111 will Is
not fee way to do it. Whit
would have been more ap-
propriate would have been to
use UM paper's good offices to
congratulate your new ben
and assure him of your
loyalty.
As It was, the one purpose
this journalistic campaign
accomplished waa ft take
some of the pleasure away
from a day feat should have
been very special for Mr.
Mmslay, his wife and kid*.
If after the competition
ended and fee smoke of baitk
had cleared, Mr. Muwlay bad
been the loser, you can bet he
wouldn't have bandied thing!
this way, That's because he's
got that special qualification
for fee Job that's not Included
in his resume — and which
your paper forgot to mention
in any of your articles.
are mandated to protect has weakened
the Individual school's authority. The
intent was to prevent drug-alcohol use,
not to go out and catch kids. AD of the
