SOTffiM FOOT - Nearly
10 people attended the loci!
Improvement aiioclaUensponsorad
candidates' night
here last Tuesday evening to
hear the views of four Coundl
candidates and two mayoral
hopefuls.
A considerable portion of
the two-hour event consisted
of bickering between members
of the crowd and some
candidates, and questions
meetly dealt with the city's
recent purchase of • computer,
the 87 percent
sewerage rate hike and the
proposed condemnation of the
Bethel Road flrehouH.
While some felt the
firefighters' Issue — which
began in 1981 whin the city's
two fire companies walked
out In protest of the layoffs of
five fire dispatchers due to
budget cuts — would be
stepped over In this campaign
unlike previous election*,
question to candidates
Tuesday night showed that
the matter was still very
much In toe public's mind,
" The city U currently
researching the benefits of
condemnation of the building,
which Is owned by the Somen
Point Volunteer Fire Com.
pany One Inc.
"It only happened because
at a few hard heads on both
sides," offered Incumbent
Republican Mayor Harvey L.
Smith, who U seeking Ha
third term, about be walkout.
Smith said the city baa
three options, to continue the
status quo in which both
companies share the facility,
have the city build in own
BrehouM or condemn At
Bethel Road property and
building under eminent
domain. He said there wasn't
enough Information regarding
the choices for him to make a
decision.
Running against Smith I*
former Council president
Fred Fontana who at the time
of the. questioning wai
unavailable due to a previous
commitment at the Someri
Point Little League award's
dtantr.
Democrat Charles Murray,
tie Second Ward candlatc
running against incumbent
Ofllr Kesnig, called for a
compromise on tta issue, as
did republican Elmer Carry, a
former councilman running
tor the First Ward seat being
vacated by George Hyatt, who
lin't seeking rMlwtlon,
Carty'g opponent, John Hill,
a Democrat, said Mat he isn't
In favor of condemnation
because it would cost the
taxpayers more money.
"Nothing U gained by It,"
HUi said of condemnation,
noting that the city could get
use of the facility I' It
negotiated with the former
Fire Company Qn».
Incumbent First Ward
Councilwoman Kesnig agreed
with Smith uying that more
Information would be needed
for Council to make a
decision. The city, she said
would alto have to find out
where the money to purchase
the facility in condemnation
would go: to the fire company
or to be disbursed by the
state.
When asked by Somera
point Improvement
Association President Ruth
Lane if the candidate would
support a move to make the
dty budget subject to voter
approval like tne school
budget is, all candidates said
hey would support such a
measure.
The recent council purchase
of a computer and If* software
which will co«t more than
1130,000 drew much public
Questioning. However all fee
candidates except 190 hit
the purchase was a slip in the
right direction.
Hill said he felt the city was
"jumping the gun" when It
purchased the computer and
that It would be financially
wiser to rent computer tpaee.
In his opening remarta,
Smith noted his recent
decision to take an early
retirement in order to denote
full time as mayor. Re
stressed Ms experience and
community work as reasons
why he should be re-elected.
"I'ma very active mayor,"
Smith Raid, "I believe In afl
the organisations of this city...
I believe I'm out there to
represent the people. I win be
here to provide the extra
leadership to keep our town
vibrant, to keep good sound
ratibles and to keep fee tax
mte down."
Fontana, who arrived
shortly before the end of the
session, said he felt the dty
should go "slow ud easy" on
condominium development
and require sidewalks to be
put in by developers.
"Our bays are being raped
by dragging the bottom," he
said adding that the B.L.
England Generating Station
in Beesley's Point and maybe
even tbe hospital are dumping
pollutants into the atmosphere.
Fontana also cited hji two
terms on Counefl and tote
years as Coundl president at
experience for the Job, He
said that in spit* of Us Job as
an airline pilot for Eastern
Airlines, he will have time to
devote to tbe position.
First Ward Council candidate
Carty noted his nineyears
on Coundl and membership
on the Planning
Board aa valuable experience
for the position. He said whin
health problems forced him to
give up public office he felt he
didn't finish the Job be was
ejected to do. He said he's
been a Democrat, Republican
and an Independent
"It has hurt that I new
finished the Job,*' he uJd. "1
ftlnk I can do a hell o* a good
jab, I have the time to spend,"
HB, who U also active In
the Sharks FootbaU
Association and Little
League, said Ha main reason
for running was his three
children and •IHIMMJ than to
grow up in a good community.
"I want Somen Point to
keep me Step ahead of other
oommunlnea," Hill said.
Kesnig echoed Hill's
reasons for running, saying
ttat her children were raJMd
"In less than two years the
energy savings at today's
money value will pay for the
enttre system. The savings
over the next 15 to 20 years
can be over $350,000 in the
Correctional Center alone,"
Evans explained.
"We have performed
energy audits on all the
county buildings. A new
energy plan has been worked
