THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1974
After three straigit victories
against unpreven teams, Mite
Slaveskl'i Raideri go into the
bulk of their schedule which
will decide their nadhme In the
CAL
The Raiders met Lower Cape
May on Saturday, a team which
has had its troubles, but they
nevertheless, as Coach Slaveski
puts it, "have the potential '
They then meet Hammonten,
Buena, Absegami, and Middle
before the big turkey day clash
with defending r AI. champs
Pleassnfville
Coach Slaveski stresses the
running game, but he feels the
learn also must prove their
passing game,
I'm satisfied with our offense,
but I look for improvement
in our passing game
and our execution Our line has
done a good job, hut they have
been bogged down on penalties.
What I mean by execution is
missed assignments (jumping
off sides, wrong pass patterns,
etc ) We have to stop hurting
ourselves with these things/'
The Raiders' Mike Linahan
has done an oiistanding Job in
the running department, which
is really no surprise to Coach
Slaveski. "Linahan hag filled in
adequately for Jim Minshull
this year at running back. I
can't say I'm surprised.
of ! to a S reat
because I felt he had the
potential He follows a line of
great running backs, which
lor the last three years I have
been happy with "
Although the running game is
the mainstay of the offense.
Coach Slaveski points out a
disadvantage of a running
offense. "If I were to defense a
team like ours, i would key on
the run As we get to the
tougher games, the teams
might do this and we would
have to turn to the pass So we
must be prepared with the pass,
and do it with consistency This
we must work on "
As the rushing offense is
good, so is the defense against
the run "Our defense against
the run has been outstanding,
and has held the opponents to
under 100 yards per game with
the exception of the first game
against Jackson where one of
their boys broke a long touch
down run If not for that run,
they would have had under 100
yards rushing That is our goal
for the defense against the run;
to hold our opponents to under
100 yards per game.
"The goal of our pass defense
ii to hold the opponents to 50
yards per game. They have
given up a little more than that,
but we art working hard to
reach that pal I expect to see
more improvement in the
department, but the degree of
improvement will dictate how
well we will do. The potential is
there but we have to improve to
be a contender in the CAL.
We have been hurt with
penalties such as going off the
line early, among other things
But we have been successful up
to date The potential for a
winning season is here, but it's
all in the boys' hands We have
to improve "
The Haiders' strengths are.
number one, the running game,
and the defense But they must
improve on execution and their
passing offense and defense
Another very important aspect
of the game is the specialty
team, which Coach Slaveski
points out also needs improvement:
"Our specialty
team should be more
productive, as it accounts for 28
percent of the game. Many
players used to look down on it,
but that has turned around
because of its importance "
Coach Slaveski also stresses
the importance of a team effort
We have had some superior
performances, but we are not
out to build any one player. We
must have a team effort
Everybody must do their job "
Although the team does not
have real depth he feels it is
deep in another sense, "We
havevery capable men that can
Till in and do the job A lot of
these guys have heen in our
program three or four yean,
and many can fill in at different
positions We have one man
that has played five different
positions on the team. Already
wehavehada man come in and
fill in at centa 1 . We also have
two men who have filled in at
wingback The key to success
lies in our team effort as a
whole We mat have that to
win this year "
Youth Center ann its goals for
the future
The Youth Center was
founded in 1947 by a group of
high school students interested
in i place where they could go
These students petitioned
Ocean City civic clubs and
organizations which were
responsive to their requests.
With the aid of city leaders
and other interested adults, the
Youth Center was created and
became a highlight in Ocean
City students' lives. It wal the
center of all social life in the
