MANAGEMENT<br />

The <strong>2008</strong> <strong>UCSF</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Radiation</strong> <strong>Oncology</strong><br />

post-graduate course “Advanced Radiotherapy in<br />

Multi-Disciplinary Cancer Management”, a two day clinical<br />

conference, will be held on <strong>May</strong> <strong>23</strong>rd & <strong>24</strong>th, <strong>2008</strong> at the<br />

beautiful St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco, California.<br />

The program includes national and international authorities<br />

in radiation oncology, medical oncology and surgical<br />

oncology, discussing current approaches to the<br />

management <strong>of</strong> Lung, Breast and Gastrointestinal<br />

cancers. Presentations will provide the attendee with<br />

information that can be applied to the daily management<br />

<strong>of</strong> lung, breast and gastrointestinal cancers. Areas to be<br />

covered include minimally-invasive surgery, stereotactic<br />

radiotherapy, hyp<strong>of</strong>ractionated radiotherapy, high dose<br />

rate brachytherapy, electronic brachytherapy, neoadjuvant<br />

preoperative therapy for breast cancer, targeted therapy<br />

and secondary treatment effects.<br />

TARGET AUDIENCE<br />

This activity is designed for radiation oncologists,<br />

medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, nurses,<br />

physician’s assistants, radiotherapists, advanced<br />

practitioners and other health care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

involved or interested in the treatment <strong>of</strong> lung, breast<br />

and gastrointestinal malignancies.<br />

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES<br />

An attendee completing this course should be able to:<br />

• Discuss the multi-disciplinary treatment <strong>of</strong> lung, breast<br />

and gastrointestinal cancers.<br />

• Discuss minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer and<br />

understand the indications for its use.<br />

• Discuss the role <strong>of</strong> targeted therapies, neoadjuvant<br />

chemotherapy and chemoradiotherapy for the treatment<br />

<strong>of</strong> lung and gastrointestinal cancers.<br />

• Discuss the use <strong>of</strong> stereotactic radiosurgery and<br />

hyp<strong>of</strong>ractionated radiotherapy for lung and gastrointestinal<br />

cancers.<br />

• Discuss pre-operative chemotherapy for invasive breast<br />

cancer and the indications for adjuvant post-operative<br />

therapy.<br />

• Discuss the different types <strong>of</strong> brachytherapy and the<br />

indications and contraindications for their use<br />

• Discuss partial breast irradiation in the management<br />

<strong>of</strong> breast cancer.<br />

• Discuss new radiosensitizers and biologic agents and<br />

their interaction and use with radiotherapy.<br />

• Discuss late sequelae <strong>of</strong> radiotherapy treatment and<br />

symptom management <strong>of</strong> acute and chronic treatment<br />

related side effects.<br />
