ANNOUNCEMENT
Microsoft SPLA – Microsoft Supports
CentOS on Windows Server 2008 R2
Hyper-V
Microsoft has announced it will support CentOS running on Windows Server 2008
R2 Hyper-V. Learn more here.
CentOS is one of the top three most popular Linux distributions for Web servers,
and could account for as much as 9% of the Web whose host OS information is
available, according to a 2010 study.
How does this impact your SPLA business? Microsoft's full support behind this
offering will help you to reach out to a broader SPLA account base. Previously,
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10/11 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2+ were the
only Linux distributions officially supported on Microsoft's server virtualization
platform. With this update, available immediately, mixed Windows + CentOS
infrastructure can be merged under Windows Server Hyper-V just as it could with
SUSE or Red Hat.
"This development enables our hosting partners to consolidate their mixed Windows
and Linux infrastructure on Windows Server Hyper-V; reducing cost and complexity,
while betting on an enterprise class virtualization platform," Sandy Gupta, a general
manager in Microsoft's Open Solutions Group, said in a blog post.
license their server applications on-premises and in the cloud on a service provider’s
shared hardware environment, for specific applications. So a Service Provider
providing the shared environment can use a single delivery platform to host multiple
users who take advantage of License Mobility for Software Assurance for their
dedicated server application instances. To learn more, review the following
Microsoft SPLA – New Lync Server
Offerings
The following new offerings for Lync Server Standard and Enterprise were added to
the SPLA price list on 1 May 2011:
6QH-00004 LyncSvrStdSAL ALNG LicSAPk MVL forSA
6RH-00004 LyncSrvEntSAL ALNG LicSAPk MVL forSA
The standard license part mentioned above (6QH-00004) replaces the following
OCS license part which was discontinued on 1 May:
KQA-00003 OCSStdSAL ALNG LicSAPk MVL forSA
Reminder: “SAL for SA” license parts enable Service Providers to develop an
offering specifically for (potential) end customers who already own CALs with active
Software Assurance coverage for qualifying products. SAL for SA licenses are
significantly discounted as Microsoft takes into account the customer’s software
investment in CALs with SA under their own “on premise” volume license agreement.
The SAL for SA license covers the server component under SPLA, which is not
covered by the end customer’s CALs. See the SPUR for the full list of SALs for SA,
Windows Server 2008 for Windows Essential Server Solutions has been discontinued
and replaced by Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials in the May SPLA
is cheaper than the discontinued license, the reason being that it’s an entry level
product limited to 25 users.
Microsoft SPLA – Usage Rights:
The Moving or Transferring of
Images
The moving/transferring of images from one SPLA Service Provider to another – or
from a SPLA Service Provider to an end customer – is not allowed in SPLA. There
are no exceptions. Please see the below language from the SPUR. Note: “you” in
the SPUR passage below refers to the Service Provider.
April SPUR, Page 17:
“Creating and Storing Instances on Your Servers or Storage Media. You have
the additional rights below for each software license you acquire. You may create
any number of instances of the server software and client software. You may store
instances of the server software and client software on any of your servers or
storage media. You may create and store instances of the server software and client
software solely to exercise your right to run instances of the server software under
the software licenses as described above (e.g., you may not distribute instances to
third parties).”
There is some confusion over these rules as customers do have the right to reimage
for their own use in volume licensing. The following are more detailed scenarios of
what is/isn’t allowed in SPLA.
Transferring an image from…
· Service Provider A to Service Provider B (when an end customer switches Service
Providers and wants to move the image). This is not allowed in SPLA. The end
customer must back up their data from Service Provider A and upload this data to
Service Provider B. The transferring of whole images is not allowed.
· End customer to Service Provider (when end customer with VL licenses chooses to
move to a Service Provider). This is allowed and is typical, but is something that is
allowed under the end customer’s volume license agreement – It is not something
that is provided as a right to a Service Provider in SPLA. In this scenario, the image
belongs to the end customer and the Service Provider hosted box is dedicated to
that end customer. The end customer is taking their own image and using it to run
the instances of server software that they themselves are licensed for.
o One such typical scenario is when a volume license customer scales down their IT
file:///C|/...ts/P2P_42013-CUD3702/HP%20SLMS%20Communications%20-%20HP%20SLMS%20News%20Update%20-%20SPLA.htm[16/09/2011 04:07:43 p.m.]

HP SLMS Communications - HP SLMS News Update - SPLA
department. Rather than have servers located at their premises, the end customer
chooses to have servers located at a secure remote facility where a third party may
manage their servers on their behalf. Since the images belong to the end customer,
the customer is free to bring them back to their own premise if they want. It is also
okay for the customer to take their own image and move it to another remote facility.
o Note: again, this is not a SPLA scenario. In SPLA the end customer has no rights to
images of the servers they use. They cannot copy these images for themselves, nor
can they transfer them to another party.
· Service Provider to end customer (when customer decides to take business back
internally). This is not allowed in SPLA. In volume licensing, the only time this can
happen is if the image and all components of the image, and all licenses, were the
end customer’s in the first place (see #2 above). This scenario isn’t allowed in
SPLA.
· End customer to Microsoft (when customer decides to move to Microsoft online
services). There is no distinction between Microsoft as a Service Provider and other
partners (third parties) as Service Providers. The rules are the same.
