ARTS & HUMANITIES
COUNCIL

From the Director
2 CURRENTS SPRING 2012
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ARTS & HUMANITIES COUNCIL
As part of preparing this
edition of Currents, I had the
pleasure of going through
our newly created donor
database to assemble a list
of 2011 Arts & Humanities
Council supporters.
I say pleasure because while data-intensive
exercises are typically tedious, this one proved
quite the opposite. As I went through all the
names, I was instead thrilled, warmed, and
inspired by the outpouring of generosity
bestowed on this organization by both new and
past donors and in-kind contributors.
With your help, we ended 2011 in the black,
a huge accomplishment for a nonprofit
organization in this or any economic climate, and
one that laid the groundwork for our continued
work this year. On behalf of our Board of Directors
and staff, thank you. We couldn’t be happier to
publicly recognize your contributions on page 15.
The coming pages provide a snapshot of our
spring programs along with updates from
Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, the Bainbridge Island
Museum of Art, Island Music Center, and
the Bainbridge Chorale. Helping to promote
organizations like these in this publication
and through other means of outreach such as
our new website, our cultural calendar, and
community e-blasts, constitutes a big part of our
mission.
But I’m also really excited about our revitalized
effort to connect directly with individual artists
and to support their work as well. Once upon a
time, in one of my previous incarnations, I was
a struggling professional musician. I know how
challenging it can be, whether you’re a writer, a
dancer, a filmmaker, a musician, an actor or any
other type of creative professional, to go through
the creative process, let alone make a living at it.
That’s why in recent months we renewed our
commitment to support individual working artists
as well as established organizations. I choose
to live on Bainbridge for the creative buzz that
permeates the air waves here. You have my
commitment that we at the Arts & Humanities
Council will do what we can to ensure our island
remains a nurturing haven for those who inspire
us with their inventiveness and vision!
Cheers,
Barbara Sacerdote,
Executive Director
Editor’s Note
our Latest Line of Hats
Over the course of a week/day/hour in my chair here at the Marge Williams
Center, I’ll pursue a slew of assorted deadline-driven ventures. Large-scale
projects like developing an issue of Currents or building and launching a
new website are peppered with, quick, short-term tasks like writing a press
release, designing an e-blast, or popping a post on Facebook.
I can’t characterize this work as wearing different hats. It’s more like I’m a milliner who each season
crafts a line of distinct but thematically bound lids designed to build brand awareness but, as
importantly, draw lots of favorable attention to the wearer.
Before I stretch that metaphor beyond recognition let me just say that my job as communications
manager for the Arts & Humanities Council is about promoting what we and other members
of the cultural community are up to and in doing so, help build and strengthen our collective
connection.
To that end, I couldn’t be happier with how our work has evolved in the last few months.
Last quarter, we re-designed and streamlined Currents to better serve our mission and
our audience.
This quarter, we launched our new website at www.BainbridgeArtsHumanities.org, making
a purposeful effort not only to showcase our own programs and services, but to create readily
accessible spaces for those we serve, including cultural organizations, individual creative
professionals, students, teachers, and members of the community at large.
Find out more about the new site on page 4. You are all hungry to know each other and to support
each other, and we believe this resource can be a big part of that.
Of course, you’ll also see on the coming pages that we have many high-quality programs and
services of our own in progress and coming up including the Island Treasure Awards, Arts in
Education, Great Decisions, Poetry Month, Celluloid Bainbridge, and our annual fundraiser,
Bainbridge in Bloom, scheduled for July 13-15.
Keep reading to get the latest, and please stay in touch.
More Great Decisions
to Be Made in March
At press time, we’re more than
halfway through this year’s
Great Decisions at the Library
series, having covered topics as
varied as Promoting Democracy;
Mexico: Transborder Challenges;
Cybersecurity; Exiting
Afghanistan and Iraq; and
The State of the Oceans
(featuring a special film
screening that packed the
Great Hall at IslandWood).
There’s still plenty of
thought-provoking material
to examine around some of
the most pressing issues of
our time including Middle
East Realignment (March 3);
Indonesia (March 24); and
Energy Geopolitic (March 31).
All of these free, moderated
discussions, co-sponsored with
the Bainbridge Public Library,
take place at 9:30 Saturday
mornings in the library’s large
meeting room.
Check our website weekly
to get topic updates and
suggested readings. You can
also join the Great Decisions
mailing list by emailing admin@
Makosky’s work to grace 2012 bloom Poster
…and how our call to artists bloomed
We’re delighted to announce
that the work of Bainbridge
Island printmaker Martha
Makosky has been selected for our
2012 Bainbridge in Bloom poster.
A Moment Still Ajar, pictured here,
will serve as the face of the Bloom
garden tour, the Evening in Bloom
benefit auction, and the Preview
Day Lunch, all taking place the
weekend of July 13-15.
A place for art
Martha’s piece was chosen from
among more than 150 works
submitted by 25 individuals
last November following a
broad-reaching call to artists.
We welcomed submissions in all
mediums and invited artists to push the envelope. The primary criterion, in keeping with the
Bloom, was that work be inspired by outdoor spaces.
Save these Dates for the Bloom
The quality, quantity, and variety of the submissions
received was a revelation. Although we had to
choose one artist and image for the poster, the
selection process left us with an imperative not
to lose touch with the remaining work or with the
artists who created it.
Our new website offered the perfect platform for a virtual gallery. When you browse
BainbridgeArtsHumanities.org, you’ll see striking imagery on nearly all of the main pages,
much of which came directly from the Bloom poster art competition.
Plans are also in the works to assemble a Bainbridge in Bloom gallery in the weeks leading
up to the July 13-15 event, to further expose the community to our talented creators and
strengthen the connection between the arts and our annual garden-based fundraiser.
A place for artists
The process of making individual contact with each of the Bloom submitters touched a
niggling nerve with our staff. For some time, we’d wanted to re-connect the Arts & Humanities
Council with individual artists, not just established organizations, both to promote their work
in a continually challenging arts economy and to offer a community service. Last summer
we had a good, if rueful, laugh when a staff member sought a musician for her wedding and
realized she didn’t know where to start. We are a cultural organization; that was just silly.
So we put out another community call, this time to invite artists across disciplines with a
Bainbridge connection to send us their contact info, specialty, and website or Facebook
addresses. Et voilá, a Creative Professionals Roster was born on our new website.
On the home page, click Resources, and then click Creative professionals roster.
The Resources section of the site includes many other listings as well, including artist
opportunities, classes, and spaces.
Stay connected, help us grow
Email bloom@bainbridgeartshumanities.org to join our mailing list and stay apprised
of all things Bloom. To be added to the ever-evolving Creative Professionals Roster, email
admin@bainbridgeartshumanities.org and include your contact info along with your
website address or Facebook page.
Arts in education Is off and Running
Providing access to quality arts education experiences remains one of the Arts &
Humanities Council’s primary goals, and we do so through our award-winning Arts
in Education program.
Seven schools are participating this year on Bainbridge Island and in North Kitsap:
Woodward Middle School; Sakai Intermediate School; Commodore Options; and
Blakely, Wilkes, Ordway, and Suquamish Elementary Schools.
Woodward recently had a visit from the West African dance, drumming, and
storytelling group Ocheami, which worked with the entire 7th grade on a
collaborative performance that was held in the Bainbridge Commons. Programs
such as this illustrate a great strength of the AIE program: enhancing students’
firsthand understanding of other cultures during their classroom study of the same
material.
4 CURRENTS SPRING 2012
Other programs are unfolding as
we speak: Woodward is at work
on a unit on Shakespeare with
theater instructor Karen Harp-
Reed, and Diane Bedell’s class is
hosting artist Craig Jacobrown’s
Northwest Native mask-making
residency at Blakely Elementary.
As the classroom residencies get
OCHEAMI IN PERFORMANCE. CouRtesY PHoto.
under way, we’re working hard
behind the scenes to streamline the program and strengthen connections among
our partnerships. We’re working closely with the Bainbridge Island School District
to ensure that protocols are in place that align with their goals and requirements.
Additionally, we’re making ongoing efforts to keep the program relevant and
cutting-edge. Program Coordinator Kristin Tollefson is currently participating in the
Washington State Arts Commision's Teaching Artist Training (TAT) Lab, an eightmonth
professional development program for teaching artists funded by WSAC
with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Kristin has brought back
and is now employing best practices from the field of teaching artistry including
the use of streamlined planning forms, consistent assessment procedures, and
targeted program evaluations.
Community partners have helped greatly as well, as we continue to ensure
the program’s relevance to our teachers and students. For support of this vital
and evolving program, we’re grateful to WSAC for continued funding, BCF, and
the Suquamish Tribe, as well as the Parent Teacher Organization Coordinating
Committee, Parent Teacher Organizations, principals, school administrative staff,
and other district representatives along with the Arts & Humanities Council
Board of Directors.
Celluloid bainbridge
Moves to october
Celluloid stalwarts who are wondering about
this year’s festival (doesn’t it usually happen
about, er, now?), wonder no more. Beginning
this year, the Arts & Humanities Council is
shifting the timing of our beloved annual film
fest to help pace our programming and to
offer local filmmakers the chance to showcase
their work during a fantastically fitting film
season: the fall.
Viewers, mark you calendars for Sunday,
October 14 at the Historic Lynwood Theatre.
Filmmakers seeking submission, this year’s
deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, June 1. The primary
submission criterion is that films have a
Bainbridge connection.
For an application, complete guidelines, and submission details, see our website or email
Rounding the
Poetry Corner
The Arts & Humanities
Council will once again
celebrate National
Poetry Month in April by
selecting and posting
community members’
verse in local storefronts.
Poetry Corners literally
puts poetry in your faces,
in the best possible sense!
Our hope is that seeing
original poems along
your everyday route will
inspire you to pause, read,
absorb, and reflect.
This year’s theme, fitting
in the wake of recently
completed downtown
reconstruction and the
entrance of spring, is
“Transformation.”
If you’d like to submit a
poem for consideration
by the Poetry Corner's
jury, the deadline is
March 9. Full submission
guidelines are on our
Poetry Month page,
where you’ll also find
information about other
Poetry Month activities
