COUNCIL
WINTER 2011-12 DEC | JAN | FEB CULTURAL QUARTERLY & EVENTS CALENDAR
Dear Friends,
Several years have passed since
I moved to Bainbridge from
Seattle. Like so many islanders,
I became a commuter. My world
revolved around my home, Rte.
305, and my ferry friends.
That all changed in June when I jumped at the chance
to work where I live, leading this wonderful arts and
humanities organization.
My eyes were quickly opened to the vast cultural
resources hidden behind our dense stands of cedar,
including high quality art and craft galleries, artisan
workshops, music organizations, performance groups,
and museums. And now I look forward to something
a community our size rarely enjoys, a fine museum to
showcase our extraordinary local and regional artists –
the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA).
Maybe you are like me, and thought the Arts &
Humanities Council was part of the city government,
but we are not. For three years out of our rich 25-year
history, we did serve as the funding conduit to the
island’s arts and humanities organizations. However,
COBI’s funding for arts and culture ended in 2010.
Today, our core mission is unchanged – to nurture
Bainbridge Island culture.
Our role is to enrich, inspire and support the creative
community, professionals, and patrons alike. We
have three focus areas: 1) Arts Education, 2) Cultural
Services for the creative community, and 3) Advocacy
& Promotion of all that Bainbridge Island humanities
and arts has to offer – part of which is the redesigned
Currents you are now reading. You will also see a
much more robust and nimble online presence in
the coming months. We look forward to hearing
your thoughts.
’Tis the season of generosity, so I hope you will
consider us in your year-end giving plans. This
past year the Arts & Humanities Council:
• Engaged 2,200 young people in a full range of
quality arts and humanities programs.
• Awarded more than $55,000 in grants and
scholarships to outstanding members of the
cultural community.
• Provided a wealth of important services to
hundreds of local artists, 28 organizations, and
thousands of Bainbridge residents.
With your support, our work will continue. You can
make a contribution today, either online or in your
One Call for All red envelope. Please help us ensure
that the arts and humanities continue to flourish on
Bainbridge Island!
Cheers,
Executive Director
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ARTS & HUMANITIES COUNCIL
A Fresh Eye
Last winter, the Arts & Humanities Council conducted a community survey
to find out what you value about our organization and what you want
from us going forward.
Several of the questions concerned this very publication: do you read
Currents; do you like it online or in print or both; and which pieces of it do
you find valuable?
Your resounding message to us was, keep Currents coming. You like
receiving a free compendium of cultural happenings, and you like having the option either to
view it online or to stow a printed copy in your glove box or near the family calendar.
You also let us know that Currents contained a lot of densely packed information that was
sometimes hard to wade through. Clearly a testament to how much is going on in any given
quarter – but we heard your message.
With feedback in hand, I sat down during the summer with Jeanette, our graphic designer
extraordinaire, and Barbara, our executive director, with an eye toward streamlining and
enlivening the magazine. We wanted clean, we wanted modern, we wanted eclectic. In short,
we wanted a Currents that reflected the astounding and inventive variety of goings-on around
the island.
What you have in your hands now includes everything you told us you value – news about us,
news about other cultural organizations, and a month-to-month event listing.
But Currents also has a crisp new edge, including full color, spiffy stock (how better to
showcase white space than in white?), and a calendar that looks like a calendar, with pointers
to details online at www.artshum.org.
I hope you like the new Currents as much as we do. And as always, I welcome your e-mail
feedback to currents@artshum.org, the same address you can use if you’d like to submit event
or program listings for the next edition.
All the best to you for a jam-packed, fun-filled – yet still relaxing, quiet, and togethernessoriented
– winter season.
Lindsay Masters, Editor
P.S. As if one full-on revamp weren’t enough, we’re on the verge of launching a brand new Arts & Humanities
Council website with a similar philosophical and design bent. Fresh, fun, and events-oriented! To stay on top
of launch news, get on our mailing list by emailing admin@artshum.org.
PUBLIC ART PROGRAM
Work in Progress
Island residents, visitors, and
businesses have lived and breathed
the evolution of Winslow Way during
these last months. One of the most
exciting parts of the renovation for
the Arts & Humanities Council has
been the installation of Public Art by
regional artist Bruce Myers, a project
that has occurred incrementally
and in tandem with construction.
We’re excited to see the unveiling
in early 2012.
Myers shaped each stainless steel
circle and arc by hand, welding the
circles together in his studio to form
a pattern of magnifi ed raindrops that
complement the newly installed rain
gardens. The patterns are installed
in six locations on the south side
of Winslow Way, creating a wayfi
nding path for ferry foot traffi c
from the intersection of Winslow
Way and Highway 305 to downtown
businesses.
Next up is the installation of cut
stone mosaics and cast bronze
molds (shown here), which will
replace the wooden blockouts in the
sidewalks. The beauty of our natural
environment inspired these handwrought
elements.
Project background
The Arts & Humanities Council
is contracted with the City of
Bainbridge Island for 2011 to
manage this latest City of Bainbridge
Island Public Art project. The artwork
was selected by the Public Art
Committee, a volunteer citizens’
advisory group, during a multi-year
evaluation process. The artwork
is supported by the Public Art
Fund and a $20,000 grant from the
National Endowment for the Arts.
ARTS IN EDUCATION
Here’s how we know it makes a difference
4 CURRENTS WINTER 2011 - 2012
At the end of each school year, the Arts & Humanities
Council takes time to evaluate our Arts in Education
program. One 2010-2011 artist-in-residence, poet Vicky
Edmonds, sent us a particularly touching evaluation of her
experience that perfectly encapsulated how and why our
Arts in Education program matters to families, to teachers,
and to artists.
My family is like a baseball.
My father is like the leather that protects us.
My mother is like the stitching that holds us all together.
My brother is like the cork inside
that makes that beautiful sound when it’s hit,
and I am like the bat
that hits a home run of love
for all of us.
This program is funded in part by The Suquamish Tribe,
Washington State Arts Commission, and Bainbridge Community Foundation.
At Ordway Elementary
School, Edmonds had the
opportunity to teach poetry
in every classroom. In an
uncommonly silent fourth
grade classroom, she saw a
challenge ahead of her.
“They were very quiet, very
internal kids. There was
barely a word the whole time
they were listening, which is unusual in any classroom,”
she said.
Undeterred, Edmonds continued with her lesson
plan, which included an explanation of the extended
simile – a type of poem that compares two dissimilar
concepts. The students embraced the format, writing
poems about their families. And although they were
initially shy about sharing their work aloud, Edmonds
was able to draw them out of their shells.
“When they did share, the poems were amazing,”
she said.
On the last day of Edmonds’ residency, a break-through
occurred. A boy approached her and told her he’d
written a special poem for his mother as a birthday gift.
“I can’t quote it exactly, but it went something like this,”
she said:
My family is like a baseball.
My father is like the leather that protects us.
My mother is like the stitching that holds us all together.
My brother is like the cork inside
that makes that beautiful sound when it’s hit,
and I am like the bat
that hits a home run of love
for all of us.
“Thank you so much for the opportunity to do this
amazing residency with all the kids and teachers
at Ordway Elementary this year,” Edmonds said. “It
has been one of the best experiences of my life to
be there for three weeks and have such a feeling of
community…I am so grateful to the children, to the
teachers and to [the Arts in Education program] for
making this possible for me.”
HOW DO OUR GARDENS GROW? An insiders’ view of Bainbridge in Bloom
By Lindsay Masters
When Wade Garretson approaches prospective Bainbridge
in Bloom garden owners, they don’t hesitate because they’re
worried about security or having their property trampled.
They’re worried that their gardens might not be good enough.
“People are very humble,” Garretson said. “It’s a very personal
thing. They’re really sharing themselves by putting their
gardens on the tour.”
During her three-year tenure as chair of the
Bloom garden selection committee, Garretson’s
guiding principle has been the joy of finding
and sharing the island’s hidden gems through
any means possible: word of mouth, personal
friendships, knowledge of area garden
designers, and in some cases, childhood friends
and memories.
The process factors in everything from the
core “wow” elements – the atmosphere and
the sensorial effects of light, color, texture,
composition, and plant combinations – to the
practical. Like parking and neighbors.
“You just can’t take it because you like it. You have to consider other
things,” she said.
Garretson added that the best gardens tell a story, one that comes
from the garden owners who pour their hearts and souls into the
design and development of their cherished outdoor spaces. And she’s
always impressed when they decide to remain in residence for the
weekend.
“It’s sort of a contact sport,” she said. “People are coming at you and
asking questions – and the real gardeners love that. They just love it.
And I just love watching it.”
Two of the garden owners who elected to stay home for the Bloom
this year were Anne Smith and Will Smart, who joined garden hosts
Leslie Marshall and Herb Hethcote; Deborah and Phil Kummerow;
Debbie and Peter MacLeod; Hazel and Andrew Lonseth; Vineyard
Lane; and Cassie and Doug Picha, who hosted the Evening in Bloom
dinner auction.
The prospect of so many visitors motivated Smith and Smart to get
their garden into shape, and Smith found visitors across the board
to be appreciative and complimentary, which was certainly fun. But, to Garretson’s earlier point, what stuck
with Smith the most was what she gleaned, both from the other garden owners and from the engaged
enthusiasts who walked her Manzanita grounds that weekend.
“It’s just so much fun to get other ideas,” Smith said. “I felt like as much as I shared, I learned from the people
who visited.”
The Arts & Humanities Council would like to thank all of its 2011 garden hosts as well as our Bainbridge
The Bainbridge Chorale
Celebrates 40 Years
In 1971 on Bainbridge Island, population 11,284, a group of
music lovers gathered in the home of Gloria and Lou Goller to
discuss forming a choral singing group. They recruited singers
and an accompanist, and on Sunday, December 12, 1971, in
the Bainbridge High School LGI Room, David Pence directed
the fi rst performance of the Bainbridge Chorale. The work
performed was Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria.
Today’s Chorale was built by more than a thousand singers
and musicians who have generously off ered their time, talent,
skills, and creativity to the Chorale and this community. Our
traditions of dedication, excellence, and outreach continue
to guide us as we strive to create the best possible musical
experience for our young and adult singers and audiences.
In so doing, we honor that small group who founded this
community choir back in 1971.
In celebration of our 40 th anniversary, we off er the
following events:
The young singers holiday recital, December 4.
our holiday concert, “Peace and Joy – a Christmas
Celebration,” which includes a rousing performance
of John Rutter’s Gloria with double brass ensemble,
December 10 & 11.
handel’s Messiah sing-along, December 27.
“The american Vision” concert featuring
Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna with orchestral
accompaniment, april 14 & 15, 2012.
“Feast for the senses” Dinner auction,
april 28, 2012.
sing with the Chorale on three “Bainbridge sings”
dates next summer.
As we raise our voices in harmony,
may our music inspire you and
enrich your holiday season.
DETAIL: DEREK GUNDY’S FISH ON.
Overcoming obstacles together –
Bainbridge Island
Special Needs Foundation
On any given Thursday, you might hear singing coming
from a little house on Winslow Way, just across from the
Winslow Green.
That’s The Stephens House. Since 2002, the nonprofit
Bainbridge Island Special Needs Foundation has operated
this young adult day program to serve our island
community and enrich its culture.
EXPLORE THE STEPHENS HOUSE
For young adults with developmental disabilities, a day full
of exercise, social interaction, and diverse activity means
increased health, mental well-being, and quality of life. The
Stephens House offers a wide variety of programming in a
safe environment outside clients’ homes, for far less than
the cost of private care.
Two experienced, full-time staff members develop our
programs, which include arts and crafts, games, exercise,
model making, sewing, gardening, music, guided
computer work, and cooking – yes, we make the famous
mini-doughnuts!
In The Stephens House van, we make exciting and
educational excursions to take in the arts, museums,
sports, and the outdoors.
A STEPHENS HOUSE OUTING AT FORT WARD. Courtesy photo.
Every Thursday we hold a sing-along, joined by Bainbridge
Island School District’s Adult Living Program students.
We regularly collaborate with other special needs
organizations such as People First and the Special
Olympics.
New clients, visitors, and drop-ins are welcome!
There’s a place for everyone at The Stephens House.
