Dear Friends,
Several years have passed since
I moved to Bainbridge from
Seattle. Like so many islanders,
I became a commuter. My world
revolved around my home, Rte.
305, and my ferry friends.
That all changed in June when I jumped at the chance
to work where I live, leading this wonderful arts and
humanities organization.
My eyes were quickly opened to the vast cultural
resources hidden behind our dense stands of cedar,
including high quality art and craft galleries, artisan
workshops, music organizations, performance groups,
and museums. And now I look forward to something
a community our size rarely enjoys, a fine museum to
showcase our extraordinary local and regional artists –
the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA).
Maybe you are like me, and thought the Arts &
Humanities Council was part of the city government,
but we are not. For three years out of our rich 25-year
history, we did serve as the funding conduit to the
island’s arts and humanities organizations. However,
COBI’s funding for arts and culture ended in 2010.
Today, our core mission is unchanged – to nurture
Bainbridge Island culture.
Our role is to enrich, inspire and support the creative
community, professionals, and patrons alike. We
have three focus areas: 1) Arts Education, 2) Cultural
Services for the creative community, and 3) Advocacy
& Promotion of all that Bainbridge Island humanities
and arts has to offer – part of which is the redesigned
Currents you are now reading. You will also see a
much more robust and nimble online presence in
the coming months. We look forward to hearing
your thoughts.
’Tis the season of generosity, so I hope you will
consider us in your year-end giving plans. This
past year the Arts & Humanities Council:
• Engaged 2,200 young people in a full range of
quality arts and humanities programs.
• Awarded more than $55,000 in grants and
scholarships to outstanding members of the
cultural community.
• Provided a wealth of important services to
hundreds of local artists, 28 organizations, and
thousands of Bainbridge residents.
With your support, our work will continue. You can
make a contribution today, either online or in your
One Call for All red envelope. Please help us ensure
that the arts and humanities continue to flourish on
Bainbridge Island!
Cheers,
Barbara Sacerdote,
Executive Director
2 CURRENTS WINTER 2011 - 2012
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ARTS & HUMANITIES COUNCIL
A Fresh Eye
Last winter, the Arts & Humanities Council conducted a community survey
to find out what you value about our organization and what you want
from us going forward.
Several of the questions concerned this very publication: do you read
Currents; do you like it online or in print or both; and which pieces of it do
you find valuable?
Your resounding message to us was, keep Currents coming. You like
receiving a free compendium of cultural happenings, and you like having the option either to
view it online or to stow a printed copy in your glove box or near the family calendar.
You also let us know that Currents contained a lot of densely packed information that was
sometimes hard to wade through. Clearly a testament to how much is going on in any given
quarter – but we heard your message.
With feedback in hand, I sat down during the summer with Jeanette, our graphic designer
extraordinaire, and Barbara, our executive director, with an eye toward streamlining and
enlivening the magazine. We wanted clean, we wanted modern, we wanted eclectic. In short,
we wanted a Currents that reflected the astounding and inventive variety of goings-on around
the island.
What you have in your hands now includes everything you told us you value – news about us,
news about other cultural organizations, and a month-to-month event listing.
But Currents also has a crisp new edge, including full color, spiffy stock (how better to
showcase white space than in white?), and a calendar that looks like a calendar, with pointers
to details online at www.artshum.org.
I hope you like the new Currents as much as we do. And as always, I welcome your e-mail
feedback to currents@artshum.org, the same address you can use if you’d like to submit event
or program listings for the next edition.
All the best to you for a jam-packed, fun-filled – yet still relaxing, quiet, and togethernessoriented
– winter season.
P.S. As if one full-on revamp weren’t enough, we’re on the verge of launching a brand new Arts & Humanities
Council website with a similar philosophical and design bent. Fresh, fun, and events-oriented! To stay on top
of launch news, get on our mailing list by emailing admin@artshum.org.
