ARTS & HUMANITIES COUNCIL
From the Director
Dear Friends,
Think for a moment about
what you treasure most
about living on Bainbridge
Island. There’s so much to choose from – our
stately forests and calming waters, our excellent
schools, the strong sense of community so many
of us feel. And for many of us, the depth and
quality of island arts and culture attracted us
here, keeps us here, and even draws us back.
Are we just lucky? No. Bainbridge Island is a
community self-defined by high quality arts and
cultural organizations, with literally hundreds
of visual artists, writers, filmmakers, musicians,
actors, and fabulous artisans in our midst.
This vibrant culture did not just happen. You
helped create it and continue to support it by
patronizing the island’s galleries, performing
arts, and cultural offerings.
Until a couple of years ago, the Arts & Humanities
Council provided stability in the center of this
community circle. As the recipient of strong
government funding, we regranted significant
amounts of money to local organizations and
artists. We managed an award-winning Arts in
Education program, providing artist residencies
in the schools tightly tied to the curriculum. We
nurtured organizations as a fiscal sponsor on
many different levels, and through a multitude
of collaborations.
Yes things have changed. But not that much.
The Arts & Humanities Council remains the hub,
the incubator, a clearinghouse that provides
connections, intersections, and bridges among
artists, life-long learners, cultural organizations,
and local stakeholders as far ranging as PTOs to
tourists to local businesses and government. Our
Arts in Education program is stronger than ever.
I am optimistic.
In my long career as an arts administrator I’ve
seen many ups and downs. The challenges we
face today are more extreme than normal, but
experience tells me one thing. As long as our
community values creativity, excellence, and
mutual support, arts and culture will remain
vibrant on Bainbridge Island.
Thank you for your support, and enjoy
the holidays!
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ARTS & HUMANITIES COUNCIL
Editor’s Note: Inside Out
I got to know the cultural community on Bainbridge when I wrote about
the arts awhile back for one of our local newspapers. My job gave me
access to locals whose accomplishments – bestselling novels, iconic films,
large-scale public artworks – left me star struck.
Over time, though, my crushes abated as I realized that even well-known
artistic professionals around here continually and willingly negotiate the space between
passionate creativity and regular old real life. Nobody I talked to was sequestered in an
attic. No one was being hospitalized for “exhaustion” or melting down à la Greta Garbo’s
ballerina in Grand Hotel. (“I want to be alone!”)
On the contrary, they took care of their kids, grocery shopped, voted, went to the
gym, and generally engaged in the same pedestrian pursuits we all do. It’s just that
somewhere in there they managed to produce transcendent works of art.
So I started asking nosy questions that were as much about the process of integrating
life and art as about the art itself. I’d ask who cooked dinner at their house, how working
around their children’s schedules affected their output, and whether making art ever
felt like a chore. I’d ask them to tell me – please – how they weighed their domestic and
financial responsibilities against the creative things they felt they must do lest their
heads explode.
Their answers were grounded, funny, and relatable. Often they said, “I dunno. How do
you do it?”
In other words, although the integration of “life” and “art” is never seamless, it is
unavoidable, rendering the distinction borderline pointless. Sure, many yearned for more
time and space to get into their heads and create. But most also believed that operating
in a social vacuum wouldn’t work because their art was too intertwined with the world
outside their heads.
Kristin Tollefson explores this idea as she reports on the first international teaching artists’
conference in Oslo, Norway. As a visual artist, Kristin’s extreme talent thrives within the
context of all the other facets of her life: teaching, arts administration, motherhood, and
a commitment to environmental and social change. In Oslo, teaching artists from every
discipline and locale demonstrated the ways in which, working from the inside out, they
are literally changing the world.
Kristin’s perspective is energizing, especially when we look back to Bainbridge at the
amount of creativity we’ll be able to take in this season, moving from the holidays into
the introspective days of winter. Whether your passion leads you inward or outward, I
know you’ll discover something wonderful. t vel molupti aceptatem. Itatur andandestis
BARN: An Artisan Center for bainbridge
A dream is about to come true. For several years, a group of Bainbridge Islanders
envisioned an artisans’ community center, a place where people of different ages and
skill levels could share and learn from one another, for mutual benefit.
Today, this group of visionaries has come together as BARN, the Bainbridge Artisan
Resource Network. The island’s newest non-profit organization is now official, and hard
at work to build and operate an artisan center here
on Bainbridge. And the Arts & Humanities Council
is proud to be a Fiscal Sponsor of BARN!
BARN on the inside
The center will have well-equipped community workshops for woodworking, metalworking, fiber
arts, jewelry making, and other artisan crafts, along with multipurpose spaces. There will be classes
for all skill levels, as well as open studio time for personal and community service projects in a
setting where people can learn from and inspire one another.
BARN's beginnings
BARN formed earlier this year as a collaboration among the Bainbridge Island Community Woodshop
– which has been trying for several years to open a community woodworking shop – and informal
groups and individuals focused on fiber arts, jewelry making, and other crafts.
The group has also found support and interest from many others, including people who want to
create a “maker space” to encourage inventing and tinkering; a community tool lending library; and a fix-it shop.
Get involved: To help with this community project or to request more
information, please email: Info@BainbridgeBarn.org.
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ARTS & HUMANITIES COUNCIL
NOTES fROM OSlO: Kristin Tollefson on teaching artistry
Seasonal change often invites introspection,
and for the past several seasons, I’ve been
mulling over questions about the work I
do in the world. I am an artist because of
passion and training, yet I still struggle with
the common misconceptions that this career
path is either fabulously carefree or hopelessly
self-absorbed. As such, in spite of the fact
that I regard art as the backbone of a thriving
culture, I question the anatomy of my own
contributions to society and their measure of
fundamental importance.
Cultivating a path as a teaching artist has
helped me knit together these strands of
inquiry. Simply defined, a teaching artist is
a practicing, generative artist who is also a
passionate and committed educator. This
work unfolds in myriad diverse locations, including
school residency programs, libraries, community
centers, health care facilities, and senior living
residences. Student learning resides at the core of these
engagements with art. And art, used in the service
of expanding knowledge, community building, and
communicating, infuses every aspect of this learning
and justifies itself within the framework of social
practice.
Bolstered by my alignment with this belief, I applied
for and was asked to attend the First International
Conference of Teaching Artists in Oslo, Norway this
past September.
The conference, which was co-organized by Eric Booth and
Marit Ulrund of SEANSE Art Center and which included
participants from organizations around the world, hung on
affirming fundamental ideas that unite this field of teaching
artistry, making connections with practitioners on a global
level, and acknowledging the expansive manifestations of
our work.
Presenters and participants at the conference illuminated
ways in which they touch a wide range of communities with
their art forms and challenge conventionally accepted ideas
of art. For example:
Tanzanian drama teacher Grace Gachocha used
methods from the theater of the oppressed to
translate social issues into community-directed
performance.
Marit Moltu created a “pictorial movement,” a
participatory public performance installation
placing yarn in the hands of 100 conference
delegates in the garden at the Norwegian
Royal Palace.
Sarah Johnson of Carnegie Hall showcased
inspirational work with incarcerated musicians
at Sing Sing Prison.
Pia Leppänen-Keränen, a Finnish participant,
discussed teaching color theory to babies
through food preparation and play.

and social practice
Amidst the broad spectrum of engagement revealed
through this community of artist-educators, core
themes also surfaced: Firsthand involvement in
creative practice helps people transcend embedded
limitations of communication; teaching artists act
as conduits for student discovery and facilitators of
the learning process; and regardless of the artistic
discipline practiced, teaching artistry attunes
participants to a transformative magic that shapes
the way they look at the world.
These consistent themes have broad implications.
When teaching artists ply their crafts, they cultivate
real listening; they hear the desires of their community
of learners and involve them in the process. This act in
turn cultivates a form of learning stewardship, a grassroots
investment made by participants who find and
voice their strengths.
Eric Booth, an international leader on the topic of
teaching artistry, articulates the importance of this
transformation in his book The Everyday Work of Art:
“We need to attend to the artistic experiences
throughout our lives… In doing so, we reclaim
many dwindling passions; we awake dormant
skills with which to construct good answers to life’s
hardest questions. We all have a natural knowledge
of the processes and perspectives that artists
use, even if we have not focused our efforts on
developing these skills the way artists have.”
This conviction is not restricted to conversations
about the arts. Across the board, in discussions ranging
from environmental concerns to social justice, creative
engagement is the constant.
The fusion of learning and teaching, individuals and
communities, and the affirmation of the core impact
of arts in society I experienced during the Oslo
conference had a profound impact on me. I came
away both grounded – by a greater commitment to
my own work and its ability to support community –
and buoyed by witnessing firsthand ways in which
the methods of teaching artistry support an embracive
way of navigating the world.
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND ARTS & HUMANITIES COUNCIL
“[The arts] are a very human way of making life more
bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or
badly, is a way to make your soul grow….”
~ KuRt VoNNEGut
I was reminded of the words of Kurt Vonnegut, who said,
“[The arts] are a very human way of making life more
bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly,
is a way to make your soul grow."
And in these days of reconfiguring economies,
remembering how to work together, and advocating for
the cause of humanity, it is critical that we all draw upon
these innate creative and inclusive capacities.
CAll For BEACH GlASS: The Waypoint
Beach glass is pretty in a jar, but how about the chance to make it a permanent part of
Bainbridge Island’s landscape – and history?
The Waypoint, in conjunction with Mesolini Glass Studio, will be producing 30 fundraising tiles
to integrate into the Waypoint plaza at the southeast corner of Winslow Way and Olympic Drive.
Each tile will be crafted from concrete and beach glass donated by private citizens, with the
interiors depicting island-themed icons in fused glass. These tiles will become a focal point
of the Waypoint’s plaza area, concentrically placed to create a circular mosaic with a 14-foot
diameter. Tiles will be finished and ready for installation in the early spring.
Diane Bonciolini and Gregg Mesmer of Mesolini Glass Studio have a lengthy history of creating
community works of art on Bainbridge Island including the Beach Glass Quilt on Winslow Way, a
COBI Public Art project that was managed by the Arts & Humanities Council.
Donations of beach glass can be dropped off at Mesolini Glass Studio at 13291 Madison Avenue
NE, or at the Chamber of Commerce, 395 Winslow Way E.
For more information on The Waypoint Project of Bainbridge Island, contact Shannon Evans at
Island Music Center knows
anyone and everyone can
play music. Many of us
assume children are the
ideal candidates for music
education, and while they
are quickest to benefit,
all adults have great
opportunities to become
active in music.
Music can slide into our
lives at any time and
become fulfilling. We
should (and can) go on and on and on about our awesome
educators, but you only have so much time! So please get
inspired and visit us at our location, online, or just call.
Sense of place
is integral to
community
well-being.
When a town is engaged and alive, there is widespread
connection, loyalty, and pride among its people. Open discussion,
empathetic decision-making, and creative problem-solving all
inform and support the bedrock of a healthy village.
Just as raising a child takes a village, so does nurturing a village.
Communities thrive when citizens and leaders are inclusive,
collaborative, and culturally aware.
VillageSpeak is a nonpartisan nonprofit whose mission is to
cultivate open, cross-island discussion about local issues.
VillageSpeak seeks to engage dialogue before, after, and during
the fires that flame our island, not just afterwards. It seeks to
positively impact the livability, friendliness, and respect that keeps
our families safe, supported, and connected.
Each month VillageSpeak
brings together a different
group of local leaders, often in
a moderated panel discussion,
to engage community
listening and learning.
From teenagers seeking to
affect local governance, to professionals at various stages of their
career and family lives, VillageSpeak kindles open conversations
across the diverse sub-cultures that define our island. Religious
beliefs, family compositions, income levels, political leanings, all
have a place at o ur village table.
villageSpeak is dedicated to:
encouraging ongoing, collaborative community
discussion about local issues
providing opportunities for our leaders to
meet with us in one-to-one conversations
cultivating empathetic, knowledgeable
civic participation and leadership
bringing the wide cross-section of island
voices into the town discussions
enlisting the arts to inform community
self-awareness and governing decisions
