city has paid the chamber to
operate since 1990. “That’s
good for local businesses,”
Councilman Jerome Stocks
said.
According to Tucker,
events sponsored by the chamber
including the State of the
City address, installation dinners,
Oktoberfest and monthly
networking events for members
have increased in popularity.
Tucker said the uncertain
economic climate presents
many challenges to local businesses
and to the chamber.
“We’re looking at retaining
current members and bringing
in new members,” he said.
In his letter, Tucker said his
efforts over the past six
months to convince the executive
committee of the gravity
of declining revenue fell on
deaf ears. “I have seen no plan
or any significant efforts to
address this crucial matter,”
he wrote.

“I think the chamber
could be a great organization,”
Stocks said. “They could have
a real role in our community.”

Dalager, who was a founding
member of the chamber and
board member for six years,
said he expects the transition
to go smoothly. “When I was
on the board we had three

and life went on,” he
said. “I have a lot of faith in
the business community.”
Dody Tucker, Gary’s
wife, is the executive director
of the Downtown Encinitas
MainStreet Association. The
two have been fixtures in the
community since 1979. “For
22 years we owned and
operated two separate businesses
in downtown historical
Encinitas, the Moonlight
Beach 7-Eleven and the
Safeguard Company on 2nd
Street,” he said.

Del Mar residents warming to cityhood celebration
DEL MAR — Observance in
July of the city as a self-governed
community is drawing increased
interest. One question being
asked is whether it has always
been known as Del Mar.
It has been since Theodore
Loop came on the scene.
Previous to that, it was part of
the township of Weed. In the
1850s, Loop owned considerable
acreage in Carmel Valley. He
envisioned the shoreline at the
foot of 10th Street of becoming a
resort area for the “rich folks”
from the Los Angeles and
Beverly Hills areas.
He laid out the township
with the cooperation of Jacob
Taylor, a surveyor of sorts from
New Mexico. Taylor was also an
aggressive promoter and developer
and concurred with Loop’s
resort ideas.
In 1886,Taylor built Casa del
Mar with shoreline amenities
including a bathing pool, 40 feet
by 198 feet, called a natatorium.
Remnants of it are still visible at
low tide. It was described as a
pool that was safe from the dangerous
stingray and great for
children.
Taylor made 10th Street 100
feet wide and there was a boardwalk
to a gazebo where visitors
could rest after making the
climb up from the natatorium.

celebrating a full array of musical
styles from modern Villa-
Lobos to jazz, pop and the classics,
will be showcased from 7 to
9 p.m. Feb. 11 at Carlsbad

(now Stratford Court) there was
a barn on the Theodore Reed
property where there was a Wells
Fargo stage coach in mint condition
on which the neighborhood
kids used to play. Likely it dated
back to days Loop worked as a
coach driver for that company.
Taylor convinced Santa Fe
Railroad to locate its tracks on
Railroad Avenue. He lived on
10th Street where the porch to
his home became the train station
and Western Union facility.
