Local resale store sees profits climb from previous year

COAST CITIES — The
Coastal Community Foundation
is accepting Education PLUS
applications from teachers in
public elementary and middle
schools in Del Mar, Solana
Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad and
Oceanside.
Grants from $250 to $1,000
will be awarded for innovative
classroom projects in math and
science instruction, real world
applications of classroom learning,
language enhancement,
music, and creative and performing
arts programs.
Guidelines and applications are
available on the Foundation’s
Web site at www.coastalfoundation.org.
Completed applications
are due by Feb. 11.
The mission of the Coastal
Community Foundation is to
enhance the quality of life in
the North Coast by directing
philanthropic efforts toward
community needs. The foundation
helps donors direct their
support toward a broad range of

Humane Society saves starving black Lab
OCEANSIDE — On Jan.
19, a black Labrador retriever
was found suffering from acute
starvation and dehydration
after he wandered into an open
garage in Oceanside.
Humane Officers from the
North County Humane Society
& SPCA were called to the
home, where they found the 7year-old
dog slumped on the
floor, huddled next to a car in
an effort to stay warm. The officers
immediately rushed the
dog to the veterinarian to
receive medical care. The dog,
now named Theo, remains
under medical care at NCHS.
NCHS Humane Officers have
begun an investigation and are
asking for the public’s help to
try to find the owner.
“This could be a case of
animal cruelty or a dog missing
its family,” NCHS Executive
Director Julie Bank said.
“Information we can get from
the public will help us determine
what the next course of
action will be.”
According to veterinarians,
it will be between six to
eight weeks until Theo is at a
normal weight. A dog of that
size should weigh about 75
pounds, Theo weighs about 45
pounds. NCHS is currently
looking for a foster home to
assist with Theo’s care until the
investigation is complete.
