Dear Campus Kids,
I knew I forgot to pack something when I
came to camp for the summer. It’s been bugging me
and now I finally remembered . . . my new water guns!
I’ll definitely have them here on Monday because
we’re having a Week 6 Water World! Of course, I’m
certain that all the campers and staff will not want to
get me wet and I’ll just be able to walk through the
bowl staying perfectly dry, right?
I really love our homemade special events and
evening activities at camp. Our staff and kids are
very creative and every event has some special
surprises.
Last night we had a talent show and to folks
on the outside of camp you probably just think it was a
regular bunch of acts. But, no, it was much more than
that. In true CK-NJ tradition, our group of hosts
came up with a creative theme and clever
introductions that made each act more special and
added some hilarious moments to the show. We also
had another one of our theatre-lobby art shows,
featuring the colorful paintings of our campers and
staff. From visiting the art studios this week, I
recognized some of the work that I had seen being
created and it was exciting to see it officially
displayed in the show.
We’re in the midst of an Insley Ball
tournament, which is an exciting blend of a traditional
Blair Academy game we learned this summer and the
all-inclusive style of a CK-NJ tournament. I’m pretty
sure we’re the only camp doing that!
And what camp lets its camp director go sky
diving! (Inside joke, parents; we’ll explain later).
I can’t wait to see you all back here Monday
for another fun and creative week. What surprises
will be writing about in our next “Sundial”?
Be happy, be safe, be kind and have fun with
your family this weekend (or on the Weekend
Adventure).
tom@campuskids.com
Well, hello, Campus Kids.
My name is Lauren, and I’m a counselor for the wonderful group
of senior girls we like to call, “The Rockettes.” I could not have
asked for a better group! I am having an amazing summer, and I
cannot imagine how it could possibly get any better, but I know it
will (it always does!). Now, although I’ve been at camp for about
eight years now, I learn new things and meet new amazing people
every time I return! Having been a camper, I’m well acquainted with
activities such as Ga-Ga, bead looming, jewelry making, yoga,
dance, and even some obscure sports, like Rob-Lou-Jen. But
just in the first four weeks, tons of new activities have hopped on
the schedule, like Insley Ball, washers, rap club, and so much more!
It’s hard to find a place that you can return to every summer and,
without fail, can learn new things without even trying. It might not
be obvious to all that Campus Kids is by far the best place on
earth, but the fact that so many of us keep coming back summer
after summer may attest to it’s awesomeness. This is my first sum-
mer as a counselor here, and I was SO nervous coming into it,
despite the fact that I’d been here before. Yet, the second my
girls arrived and I was thrown into the perfect whirlwind that is
camp, I knew this is exactly where I wanted to
be. So shout out to my Rockettes (rock out,
girls) and all the other campers and counselors
that make up this amazing place! CK all day.
DAY
By Tori D.

“ Booty“ by Stu
Hi everyone, These past couple of weeks I’ve
been asked by several campers how the tradition
began of shaking my booty on stage after every
theater performance.
First a short musical history fact. In 1976 a
group called KC and the Sunshine Band recorded
song called “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your
Booty.”
Fast forward to the summer of 1992, the 2 nd
year of Campus Kids. We used to have a talent
show almost every week. One night Tom, myself
and 2 women who worked in our office got talked
into getting on stage and dancing to “Shake Your
Booty”.
Anyway, the next time I got up on stage someone
yelled out “Hey Stu, shake your booty!” So I
did, and after that everyone just started cheering
“booty, booty, booty” every time I got on
stage. A tradition was born that’s lasted for 20
years.
Hey Martian Mellows! I think you just got ROCKEDJ
Galaxy gals performed a skit in a bag;
Their meeting was better than a game of tag.
“Assassin” was an obsession this week.
“Dear ___________, You’re dead,” is something you would
sneak.
A clue for next week that can be unfurled:
What is wild and wet that rhymes with “Smater
Smorld?”
If homesick this week, a word to the wise:
Home is great, but it’s no surprise!
There is so much more to do and see here:
People don’t do this much in a year!
It’s been so great getting to know all the new girls
this week! If we haven’t had a chance to chat, please come
over and say “hello!” I would love to know each of you better!
This week has been one of the most relaxed yet in
the bunk. It is amazing to see how quickly the bunks
can change with even the addition of one new camper!
Remember that the more you put into your group the more
you will get out of it. We are a family!!
Next week is going to be SO MUCH FUN I Can’t
wait to see you there!
Devon—HC Younger Girls

Hey CK Family!
Abe here from the Galactic Empire. Well,
it seems the copious amounts of waterbased
activities, from slip 'n slide, to
water balloon foursquare and pool par- GE
ties have helped us beat the heat from
last week! And while the first day of
camp this week brought with it a great big soggy raincloud,
it served to cool us all down and what a lovely week it's
been since! Those of us who are new this week have been
busy getting familiar with classic camp games, such as GaGa,
gladiator and ultimate frisbee, but we've also had some new
traditions take hold this summer, with games such as Insleyball
and washers, and activities like slackline, and siegecraft!
And how great was that talent show, right!? Have a
great weekend, and we'll see you all Monday for a brand new
week, with new things to do like rocket launches and The
Weird Show!!! For now, I'm gonna sign off...my arms are tired
from an awesome Broga session!
New Experiences
By Ross Orlando
Growing up in Kansas, I can say
that summer camps were not nearly
as popular as they are back here. Sure
we had the occasional day camp, but
sleep-away camp was something new
to me.
Going into camp I had been hearing
phrases such as “life-changing” and
“really made a difference.” I can see
that those statements are true for
some of the campers.
Campus Kids is a kind and nurturing
environment. This is my first year
here and I can say that camp reminds
me of my high school. Everyone is
nice to everyone else and accepts
each other unquestioningly.
I am a counselor for the freshman
group the Cosmic Kids and it has
been a blast. From a ferocious game
of War (the card game), to suspenseful
Beyblade battles, it has been
so much fun.
Part of me is regressing
and on the weekends
looking for old
toys from my childhood
to bring
back to play with the
kids.
After all of that, it is pretty obvious
that I like my job a lot. However
at this point I would like to
sincerely thank Luke Vincent for filling
in for me while I am sorting out
some health problems.
Well, to quickly veer from that sad
note, let’s have a great rest of the
summer at CKNJ!
Get Ready to Get Wet!

Hey Guys!
My name's Emma and I'm just going to introduce myself to you all. I'm a first year counselor this year
for sophomore girls! I love them to death (MOON PIES!) I was actually a camper at CKNJ from when I
was sophomore all the way through dupers, sooo this is my 9th summer, (at least that’s what I think,
I can't do math!) So I don't really know what to say, I hate talking about myself, so in a few words I'll
tell you what I'm about. If you see me on campus I'm usually either in a bandana with my 6 string on
my back, or in a bathing suit soaking wet, usually I'm wet from my kids playing drip, drip, drench on
me, not from the pool. I seem to blend in with the campers because I like to run around and yell,
play games, and laugh at everything from people making funny voices to poop jokes. My co counselor
is Kimmie, I love her to death, we are also known as mommy and daddy. Many people ask me why
Kimmie's mommy and I'm daddy and the truth is I can't tell you the answer.
Our first session bunch decided I'm more dad-like and Kimmie's more momlike,
which is probably true since most of the time Kimmie's yelling my name
because I'm either not eating my vegetables or joking around with the kids.
Anyway, that's me as a camp counselor! CKNJ is my favorite place in the
world, it sounds so cliché, but I'm 100% serious. I love it here, and I hope I
can help you guys love it as much as I do!!! DADDY LOVES HIS WIDDLE MOON
PIES!
Emma Carroll — counselor of the G6 Moon Pies!
Swimming, Swimming, In The Swimming Pool…
Hello again!! WOW, talk about it being hot out, last week was
extremely hot at CKNJ! But with the hot weather, came more
pool parties which equals double the fun! It was great to see the
kids during pool parties demonstrating all the skills they have
been learning during swim instruction... i.e. treading water, frontstroke,
backstroke, sidestroke, rotary breathing and even butterfly,
as well as more advanced techniques like flip turns and back
dives! We even had campers helping other campers, using the
techniques they learned from their swim counselors, which is
totally awesome and just goes to show that they have been great
listeners. I expect, for all you new campers, that swim instruction
can be equally as fun, because I've seen it happen.
Noodle relay races take place, as well as
getting to wear the fins and practice deep dives
to retrieve sunken treasures, a.k.a. a
chair/ the lane line wrench. Some more
exciting news came in today about another
camper who successfully walked
across the entire slackline!! Great job
Matt C. that's not easy to do. We also
have a lot of campers getting really close
to being able to balance their way across
the line, for those of you who know who you are, keep signing up
you're doing amazing, and for those of you who don't know what
slackline is, sign up and find out. I'll give you a hint, it takes a lot
of balance and concentration to do successfully, it's not on the
ground, nor in the sky, but is between two trees low to the
ground. OK I'll just tell you, it's like a balance beam that moves
and has some give to it, almost like a tightrope but different material.
And in archery this past week, I've been hearing talk of a
lot of people hitting bulls eyes, even first-time archers hitting bulls
eyes, which is almost unheard of. So next week we will be doing
a distance shooting/advanced archery period for those of you
who really want to test your skills. Think you have what it takes,
sign up!!! Until next time,
In 1987, a few years before Campus Kids
was founded, Tom Riddleberger was getting ready
to go on stage at the local karaoke bar. The
Fat Lady Sings was packed that night. A talent
scout from Tower Records was hidden somewhere
in the dimly lit parlor. Backstage, Tom
psyched himself up in front of the mirror.
“This is your night, Tom! Go out there
and sing your guts out! Take the stage!”
The lights faded up as “Livin’ on a
Prayer” began blaring. The crowd all got on
their feet and clapped to the beat as Tom began
singing. As he sang his way through the final
verse the karaoke bar was literally vibrating
with energy. People left and right were fainting
from Tom Riddleberger's brilliance.
He had finally done it. Tom had made it
big.
*****
The year is now 1992. One year after
Campus Kids would have been founded, Jeremy
Berse, or “GubJub” as he was better known, sat
hunched over his desk. It was 4:30 AM and in
the World of Warcraft, 4:30 was prime raiding
hours. Jeremy navigated his level 70 Warlock
through a perilous battlefield. He cast spell
after spell, decimating the digital world.
Just as “Eternal Glitter” by Töm Riddlerberg
(Tom Riddleberger’s stage name) came on his radio,
the battle took a bad turn. Jeremy’s clan
was facing a tough foe. His warlock was no
match!
“Noooooo!” Jeremy exclaimed as his digital
self was vanquished.
“I hate this song! I dislike Töm!”
Jeremy threw his wireless gaming mouse
across the room at his radio.
Hey Campus Kids! This is Erica Grisanti writing to you
from the greatest bunk group in the entire world--the
Lunar Ladies!!! This week we had the Week 5 talent
show, and together my girls and I performed a dance to
the song "Waka Waka." It was an amazing experience
working together with them to come up with a dance
and then perform it live on stage in front of the entire
camp! For those of you who are not familiar with this
song, it was written for the FIFA world cup 2010. The
song is about believing in yourself, so if you fall, you
get up and dust your self off
and try again, which is something
that we all encourage
here at camp. Peace, love,
Hello Campus Kids! It’s scary to think
it’s already our fifth week at camp
and that the first week of this session
is already over! It just proves the
old saying, time flies when you’re
having fun!! I love it when campers come up to me and talk to me about
new activities they’ve tried and how much they’re looking forward to tomorrow
and the activities they’ve signed up for. The tournament for this
week is a new game brought to camp by Celil (counselor for Zaphod Beeblebros)
who went to Blair Academy! It’s called Insley Ball, named after a
dorm on campus. It’s a mix between ultimate and handball that is played
in the performance gym because of the mats on both sides of the gym wall.
Each team has a goalie that stands in front of the mats and the opposing team has
to throw the ball from in front of the 3 point line (in basketball) and try to whip
the ball passed the goalie to hit the Blair mats. Our tournament, also known as
“The Game You Wouldn’t Know if Campus Kids Wasn’t at Blair Academy, Insley Ball
Tournament Tournament”, is something new and exciting this year, and the number
of campers coming out to play is very exciting! I’m looking forward to this new
activity and to see how fast the campers have picked up on what soon will be a
favorite game here at camp! Come back to camp refreshed and energized for another
sport-tastic week here and remember to bring those softball or baseball
gloves because…you should sign up for softball!! Katie McNally
Hello Campus Kids!
Earlier this week, I was reminiscing about the times when I was a camper and
how much I see myself in a lot of you… Teri was actually my head counselor! One
morning at breakfast, as we were talking about all of the amazing things and activities you
have all been participating in, I felt as though I was re-living my camp years. Don’t get
me wrong, much has changed about camp since I was a camper, there are different activities,
different counselors, and obviously a different campus, however the camp philosophy remains
the same and the family feeling is still set into this camp. I watch as each of you grow… you grow
into new relationships, you learn how to partake in new activities, you indulge in new outlooks on life…
The ironic thing about the conversation at that breakfast table is I don’t feel any different when I am here,
I mean, aside from the fact that I have a lot more responsibility. I still find myself making new friendships,
learning how to play new activities, and getting new opinions and outlooks on life. Every year as I
come back to camp I see a change in who I am, and it is always for the better. As years go on, we see improvements;
however we see a consistency that is unity, respect, and lifelong friendships. Whether it was
my first summer in 2001 or the current summer now, 2011, it is amazing to see what seems to be an everchanging
camp remain equally important in my life.
I hope you all had a great week this week, I know for the Solar Sisters there were a lot of laughs,
bonding times, new friendships made and plenty of enjoyable moments! Have a safe weekend, and we
can’t wait to see you on Monday!
Much love,
Kim ODP — Head Counselor- Older Girls division

What a week it's been! There is a phenomenon
sweeping the camp, and it is a little
game called "Assassin." I'm currently writing
this Sundial article in a specially constructed
room made entirely of mirrors, so I can see
behind me and at every other angle, in case
some master of ninja-stealth is attempting to
sneak up on me with a sock in hand for the
metaphorical kill. I'm not even wearing socks anymore, just in
case. You never know what trickery to expect, as campers and
counselors have become increasingly more creative in their methods.
I won't reveal my location, but I will say that you shouldn't
bother trying to get me out of the game if you see me on campus; I
hired a team of Wookie scientists to build me some Surrogate robots
based on the designs I think I saw in some movie I was half
paying attention to a while ago. They owed me a life debt, so I got
a good deal on a bulk rate. Luckily, this allowed me to enjoy the
ridiculous Apache Relay with the Seniors, watch the Super-Seniors
jam out to their great lip syncs, and be amazed once again at the
displays of skill in our Week 5 Talent Show. Thinking about it all
brings a smile to my face and lets me drop my guard for a few
minu-- What was that?! Oh, oh no. That tap on my shoulder can
only mean one thing.... Blast my infernal reminiscing! Assassin,
Hello Campus Kids!
My name is Brian, and I am a staff assistant
here at Campus Kids. I want to
express to all how fantastic this summer
has been for me. There have been tons
of extremely fun events that have happened
this summer. There have been
two unforgettable talent shows already,
and as I am writing this article I am getting
ready for a third talent show tomorrow
night. There is no doubt in my mind
that it will also be incredible. And how
could anyone (who was there) forget
Rock of July? There were tons of fun
things to do and plenty of good music to
listen to. There was also the interpretive
dance show and the Broadway music
show too! In addition to all of the
great shows, who could forget the great
soccer tournament final and the Ro-
Sham-Bo finales? Just to sum up, this
has already been a fantastic summer
and it is only week five. There is still a
ton of fun just waiting to happen. So as
I sign off for now, stay excited CKNJ!
Team A Staff Assistant

To all the wonderful people who are sitting down,
reading the amazing Sundial that Teri and the team put together,
I am Luke Danial John Vincent. I’m 24 years young,
born and raised in sunny South Africa. This year I am a
freshman counselor for the Cosmic Kids... wait, well actually
this summer I have also been a super
duper counselor for the Hubble Space
Teleblokes. This is my second year at
Campus Kids, thanks to Mr. Riddleberger
giving me the chance to teach all you wonderful
kids and young adults. Most of you
know that, yes, I am British and, yes, we
pronounce things differently than you U.S.
citizens. So what if you say water bottle
and I say ‘waerr bo-ell’?... for some reason
we just have this lazy pronunciation where we miss out on
our “T”’s all the time.
So what did I do all year round... since we were
last together, my plans for Joining the Royal Air force as a
fire fighter changed. Instead, I went in a different direction
because of a very special lady in my life at home, a lady
known as Jenna, who made it just too hard for me to leave
to go into the military. So I started a job as a physical education
coach at primary schools (for kids ages 6 to 12). All
these kids are an amazing bunch. Besides teaching, I also
got to join Jenna as a cheerleading coach at the school four
times a week.
In April, I finally completed 150 hours of coaching
needed to do my tests for what is called a Level Three
USASF, which lets me coach the Blackpool Scorpions
cheer team. I also help out with the Scorpions level 3 Elite
Team. I love to show dedication and enthusiasm and get
the kids to enjoy their time with me and the team.
While at camp this year, I have mostly helped out
the Seniors and Supers in the Fitness Center. So while you
may know that I have a love for this kind of training, what
you may not know is that I started really working on gymnastics
five months ago. I love it! So this
summer at camp, I have been able to help
out in gymnastics with the guidance of a great
team of gymnastics counselors here at camp
that I can always get advice from. So I want
to say a massive thank you to Alexa, Marc
(an amazing gymnast from France, the home
of Garlic Bread), and also and especially
Becky who just so happens to also be an
amazing cheerleader!
Now, I know what most of you are thinking... that
cheerleading is for girls in skirts, shaking pom-poms. It is
not the case. So I thought I’d give you a look into what
cheerleading really is.
Cheerleading is a dynamic athletic activity, which
involves breath-taking routines such as jumps, tosses, human
pyramids, yells, etc. Those who take part in Cheerleading
are called Cheerleaders. Cheerleading is considered
a sport by several schools and universities. There are
millions of Cheerleaders around the world, and three million
come from the USA.
*cheer leading is over 100 years old
*Back then, when cheerleading first started, all cheerleaders
were men
*now 97% of cheerleaders are female
*12% of cheerleaders are aged between age 5 and 13
*The average cheerleading squad is a total of 18 people
*30% of schools in the UK have a
cheer squad
So you can see all these amazing
facts on why so many people
love this sport! While you’re at
camp, I hope that those of you
who really want to learn on how
to be a cheerleader will sign up
for it and talk to me about it, because
I would be happy to show
you some basic or advanced
moves and routines. That’s all for
now! Toodleloo =)
“How’m I doin’?” Remember
when NYC Mayor Ed
Koch walked around the city
streets asking that question?
That constant thirst for feedback
is a great example to follow.
Every morning at camp
(early!) the members of our staff “Leadership Team”
meet to answer that question. We compile the input
from our campers, staff and parents and set our priorities
for the day (and days) ahead.
What’s amazing to me about a camp staff like
ours is that we are dealing with both the overall organization
and functioning of camp while, more importantly,
supporting the individual needs of every person, camper
and staff member. Sometimes parents apologize for
asking us to look into the particular concerns of their
camper because they feel that we are “so busy with
other things”. Yes, we are busy, but there really aren’t
Hello all! Fine arts has had a fabulous Week
Five! This week in arts and crafts we made our
own scratch art pages and in ceramics we
changed normal mugs and bowls into monsters,
mice, and anything else you can think
of. All the projectiles and rocket launches keep
rocketry and siege craft surprising. It is amazing
how many different ways you can make a catapult, and how
it is always fun to launch a rocket, no matter how many
times you have done it before. Comic strip, advanced jewelry
making, fashion, fashion accessories, and digital photo
are still producing beautiful projects, but painting definitely
stole the show this week. We splatter painted outside,
turned our names into monster, and challenged ourselves to
create a painting without taking the brush off the page. After
convincing you that your clothes will not be stained forever,
and that it really is ok to throw the paint splatter painting
was so much fun. I even had fun just looking out the
window and watching all of you throwing paint willy-nilly.
All in all it has been a fun and interesting week. Thank you
so much for having and open mind and really trying all
of our projects even when you are really nervous about
them.
Fine Arts Coordinator
P.S. — Did you know that even though Mr. Pollock's art is often
considered accidental he continually denied it, and after
mathematicians studied his work, they discovered
that some of Pollock's art contain mathematical fractals?
Also did you know that he stopped naming his works in
order to make people look at a picture for what it was without
preconceptions based on names?
any “other things” that we do. It is hectic here, but we
are the masters of multi-tasking and there’s nothing we’d
rather do than extend that extra time, that special dose
of TLC, when a camper most needs it.
We work hard to coordinate our efforts. We
observe, we interact with campers and staff, we communicate
constantly, we compare notes, we make decisions,
we solve problems. And we keep asking ourselves, “How’m
I doin’?”
Although we’re never perfect, as I look over the
camper roster today, I see many, many campers who have
made remarkable progress since their first day, even if
they only arrived Monday of this week. The satisfaction
of the work we do is never-ending.
Please don’t hesitate, ever, to tell us how you
think we’re doing. We value your input and support. And
we’re looking forward to three more unforgettable weeks
at camp.
Hi, everyone! My name is Teeny and I am a counselor for the Super Nova Gurlz. I have had such
an amazing summer so far. This is my first year as a counselor but not my first at CKNJ. I was a
camper for 7 years! This camp was incredible when I was a camper and gets even more amazing
every year. This summer I’ve had the chance to try all of the awesome activities CK has to
offer and I couldn’t picture my summer any other way. YEAH SOLAR SISTERS!!
Hey Everyone, Welcome to the Sean-Dial!
This session we have some interesting shows, consisting of a Talent Show and the
Weird Show! The Talent Show showcases a wide range of campers and their skills for
week 5. The Weird Show is a showcase of all the Performing Arts activities that normally
don’t make it to the stage. Acts such as Gymnastics, Cheer-Leading, Dance
Styles, and Drums will be for week 6. With all these performances for the session,
along with future session shows, I figured this would be a good time to share some
tactics for helping Stage Fright.
Stage Fright is the nervous and anxious feeling that people may feel before, or
during a performance. Stage Fright comes in many different intensities, symptoms, and ages. Even veteran
actors who have been acting for their entire lives still get Stage Fright, so it is completely normal for people to
experience. Here are some tips to cure any uneasiness before stepping on the stage.
1. Take some deep breathes to calm your nerves. In through the nose and out through the
mouth. As a former Yoga Counselor, its amazing how deep breathes can relax the body.
2. Find a way to see the audience through a small opening in a curtain. Seeing the audience
may help loose the shock of seeing a lot of people. You may see someone you know to help
soothe your nervousness.
3. Try putting something small inside your shoes. Like a bead, or a penny. Have someone you
care about (like your parents or friends) tell you that whenever you feel the item in your shoe while on
stage, remind yourself that “you are loved and deserve to be on the stage”. I used this trick whenever
I would audition, because at any point you can have this reminder, without anyone seeing your toes
move.
4. Don’t ever think that Stage Fright is always a bad thing. It’s often good to be nervous,
because it shows that you care a lot about the show. If you didn’t care then you would lose
focus and losing focus is when people often mess up.
5. Did you notice when I mentioned that Stage Fright comes before and during a performance?
Well it’s important to remember that it always goes away once you are having fun or leaving the
stage. You might be a little scared at first, but I guarantee that it will be gone by the time you’re
leaving the spotlight.
Have a great weekend and see you on Monday!
