Dear Campus Kids,
I know it’s been six weeks since we were
in Blairstown and the final notes of Campstock
were still echoing around the bowl. But it seems
like it was only yesterday. Like me, I’m sure your
memories of camp are still fresh in your mind. We
had lots of fun and made many friends, and we
don’t want to forget any part of it.
As you’ll read in this “Sundial”, staff are
also feeling “campsick”. Just like you, they’ve been
telling and re-telling their camp stories to friends
and family, risking the rolling eyes and sighs from
friends who don’t always “get it”.
We’ll always have our camp memories, and
I want to thank the staff who contributed to this
“Sundial” so we could re-live some of those. There
will be more memories to share at our camp
reunion on December 2nd. I’ve heard that there
are campers who have already started Reunion
Countdowns. You’ll be getting an invitation in
about a month.
You should have just received a 2012
camp Feedback Survey from us and I really hope
you’ll fill it out and send it back as soon as you can.
This year we’re also offering an online option for
the survey: www.campuskids.com/feedback . We
really value your opinions — campers and parents
— and any suggestions you can give us. They are
important as we plan for future summers.
Speaking of which, I’m going to finish this
up and get back to working on plans for CK-NJ ’13,
sure to be our luckiest, best summer yet!
I hope you’re having fun and working hard
in school. Remember to be happy, be safe, be kind,
and BE AT THE REUNION on December 2nd!
Hello Sundial Readers!
It seems like forever since I’ve written a Sundial
article!!! My name is Katie McNally and I am an Assis−
tant Director alongside Jeremy! I work with the activ−
ity coordinators and make sure everything’s running
smoothly and that everyone’s having fun in activities!
Since camp ended, I traveled back up to school to
Plattsburgh, New York where I’m finishing up my mas−
ters in special education at SUNY Plattsburgh. I’ve been
enjoying the gorgeous weather up here, exploring the
beaches and finding new spots to look at the beautiful
Lake Champlain, with my friends, at least until the snow
starts! I think I’m one of the lucky members on staff
because I get to see a lot of camp friends throughout
the year like Dana, Mel, and Hannah! I am excited to
think that the camp reunion will be right around the
corner soon, so maybe my Plattsburgh friends and I can
take a road trip down to New Jersey to come visit!
Until next time,
CKNJ,
Since camp has ended I had a week at
home to catch up with some friends and family
before heading North back to Plattsburgh.
Most of you know that I, along with a few
other staff at CK-NJ, played softball for
Plattsburgh. Now that I am no longer eligible
to play, I had my first experience standing on
the other side of the fence to watch the girls
play this weekend. It is definitely strange to
watch the game rather than play it, but to try
and make the adjustment easier on myself I
still attend some practices and help out when
I can.
However, I do think about camp often. I
miss my Foxes in Soxes and think of all the
memories and good times we have had. I do
Camp Counselors
Nothing’s more important as we prepare
for camp than finding the best
possible counselors. Hiring camp
staff is a year-round process. If you
know someone who would make an
awesome counselor, please encourage
them to visit the “staff information”
section of our website. They must be
at least 18 and have completed at
least a year of college.
not think I have one specific favorite memory
at camp. I just truly enjoyed the summer and
had fun being outside and running around. It
also was not easy adjusting to post camp life.
It was a little strange to wake up thinking I
had to get ready for activities
when in reality I just
had to get ready for class.
I hope everyone had a
great rest of their summer
and I cannot wait to be
back in Blairstown next
year.
Foxes in Soxes Counselor
Hey everyone!
I just wanted to check in and wish you a happy fall!! My fall has been amazing so far! The beginning
of school was so hot that it felt like we were still in summer! This week is the first week that it
started to get cooler here in rural Pennsylvania, but the sad part is this means summer is officially
over. This past summer was amazing and I've been keeping in
touch with everyone as much as possible! Danielle Ditty and I
go to Susquehanna University together. Every once in a while I'll
go to her house and we'll sit on her porch and reminisce about
how we miss camp and our favorite girls, the Foxes and the
Honeys (and of course my Moon Pies!). I hope everyone is having
a great school year so far, and I hope everyone is getting
ready for one of the best holiday ever... Halloween!
CK love to all,
Counselor for Foxes in Soxes
Camp, in many people’s
minds, is a summer activity that
that now lies dormant until it
magically comes alive next
June. And while that’s certainly
true about the actual summer months, it’s not
true about the entire camp process. Every month of
the year is filled with some aspect of camp or getting
ready for camp, Fall being a vital part of the whole.
Fall is our best time for assessment and planning,
and while our heads are filled with plans for next
summer, we hold off on making too many important
decisions until we can complete our assessment. Coming
off the euphoria of summer, it’s easy to think that
everything was great an we are ready to roll on to another
camp season. But even after the best of summers,
there are always things that can be improved
and new ideas that can be adopted. We have much to
learn from both our successes and our mistakes.
Our assessment includes many parts. Staff
members during the summer give us at least two written
assessments. Their points of view are very important
and helpful. We also, though, need the input of
our campers and their parents, which is why we just
sent you both our annual Feedback Surveys. Your responses
are very helpful and provide a lot of guidance.
We’ve also got lots of notes taken during the summer,
things we jot down as we talk to people, have phone
conversations, read emails, and simply observe what is
going on around camp. My “Notes for 2013” document
began way back in April when we started saying things
like, “Here’s something we should do next summer . . .
“ Some of you will still be calling and writing and contributing
more to our camp assessment, and I always
love having those conversations. And I’ll be meeting in
person with many of our staff to talk over what happened
and what should happen next.
Then there are the conversations we have
with other camp directors and the webinars and workshops
we attend in the Fall that help us gain perspective
on our camp as we hear new ideas and share what
worked for us.
All of this goes into the “big pot” of assessment
and helps us move forward as we make the best
possible decisions for our camp.
You may have heard your camper talk about
“bunk meetings” and things like “highs and lows”.
That’s a form of assessment that we teach and practice
during the summer. It helps campers and counselors
to take stock of each day, to recognize all the
good things that happened and to speak about what
wasn’t good so that changes can be made. This helps
to teach the skills of assessment, communications,
support, goal setting and responsibility. Some campers
are intimidated by this at first, but it quickly becomes
an integral part of their day and helps them
know that they can have control in their lives and work
together to make things better.
Yes, camp will “come alive” next June, but perhaps
the most important part of what makes camp
happen is taking place right now. I hope you will participate.
Hey Campus Kids,
I am currently writing this article while
sitting in study hall at school. I can't even
believe that it's been more than a month
since camp ended. I miss everyone so
much and I'm already counting down the
days until the Campus Kids reunion! I'm so
excited to see everyone again.
Since I've been home from camp I have
been very consumed with homework and
catching up with friends that I didn't get to
see all summer. Also, this year I got into
my school’s Art Honors Society, so I have
been working on a huge group project.
We have to make a sculpture using only
recyclable materials. It is a very difficult
task, but so far it is coming along great! I
am also involved in my school’s Auxiliary
Club and I just found out that we are starting
a new volunteer project where we get
to go to help out at an animal shelter which
makes me very happy because I love animals!
Anyway, I hope that you are all having a
great new school year and I can't wait to
see you all very soon!
NOT IN THE BOWL! ...NOR THE 9 TH HOLE!
I’ve dreamt often during the past month of these words being
belted across the Romano Dining Hall, and the sounds are just
as real as they were back in June. I hope everyone has transitioned
nicely back into school, or work, or whatever this Fall
has in store for you. Just to give you a quick update, I am
back at the University of Maryland for my senior year and
even started an internship with KaBOOM! – a non-profit organization
dedicated to saving play in America! (See, even
when I’m not at camp, play is ALWAYS on
my mind).
I hope you guys have all checked out your
bunk group pictures on the camp website!
I’ve (admittedly) spent far too much time
looking at them. Watching the growth between
the beginning and end of the summer
for many of you makes me extremely
proud. It even makes proud me knowing
that you actually sat still long enough so that Stu could take
your picture – well done.
I, unfortunately, have to run, as class is starting in thirty minutes.
Remember to keep in touch – I’ve heard from some of
you but would love to hear from all of you. I hope everything
is going well, and I’ll be sure to drop you another line in the
next Sundial. Most importantly, don’t forget our common
goal…TO BE TALLER THAN STE!
Danny, Older Boys Head Counselor
Hi Everyone!
My name is Kimmie Stivers, and I was a counselor
for the Little Lou Whos this past summer. (A special
hello to all of my Little Lous!) While I was very sad to
leave camp, I didn’t have much time before my next
journey began. I am now a graduate student at The
College of New Jersey, completing my fifth year in a
five-year program for Special Education. Since starting
my graduate program I have also become a
Graduate Assistant, a new job that is exciting and
challenging. As the Student Activities Graduate Assistant,
I help the Assistant Director plan and supervise
events that involve a variety of student organizations
on campus. It’s crazy to go from being in these
student groups to coordinating all of their activities,
but it’s been interesting seeing how all of our events
are put together.
Besides my new school responsibilities, I have also
had my share of special September events. It was
I've been missing camp like crazy
since the minute I left, and I'm sure
you all are too! I met so many amazing
people from all over the world at
camp, and it's sad to make so many
close friends, and then have to say
goodbye, especially to my international
friends!
Now I'm back at Rutgers University
for my junior year, taking a lot of
classes, and doing way too much
homework! I'm also student teaching
in Summit, NJ in a first grade class!
It's been so amazing and I've already
learned so much since being there. It
makes me think about all the things I
learned at camp this summer. Between
learning to longboard, getting
my first three pointer in a basketball
game, learning to sew, and many
other things, something I want to encourage
everyone to do next summer
is to try something new!
Camp is the best place to learn
something new because everyone's is
such a good sport and people are always
willing to help! I don't have
much else to say, just that I miss you
amazing day in the city with three of my best friends.
We visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, saw Bring
It On: The Musical, and went to the San Gennaro
Festival. There was a lot of walking, eating, and
laughing; we were absolutely exhausted by the end of
the day, but it was worth it! September has also seen
my family apple picking, at the beach, and watching
football. My dad and I are heading to Indiana next
weekend to visit one of my brothers at Notre Dame
and watch the Irish take on the University of Michigan.
I can’t wait to see my brother
and the game!
I hope everyone else’s school
Counselor for the Little Lou Whos
Hello Campus Kids!
Colin here, formerly the counselor for the Freshmen
Fizzes! I’m currently writing to you from a cubby in the main
library at the University of Arizona. It’s not quite as exciting
as double period fishing or rocketry. I can’t help but to constantly
find myself daydreaming about CK-NJ 2012. I was only
lucky enough to have a two day buffer from the end of camp to
the first day of school and it was a bit of a struggle adjusting
back into school mode. I kept forgetting that ro-sham-bo
wasn’t a common method for settling a dispute among college
students, which lead to many awkward moments with confused
faces and blank stares. I lived two months of my life throwing
up a simple rock, paper or scissor when I found myself in a predicament
and suddenly I didn’t have
access to such a convenience.
I thought that I would enjoy
getting back to some of my routines
after camp. For example, having the
luxury of waking up when I wanted/
intended to wake up. I didn’t think I
would miss my freshmen boys waking
me up at 7AM because they were eager to kick off the day.
Yet I realized that the repetitive blaring sound of my alarm
clock under my pillow wasn’t quite as exciting as a group of 9-
10 year olds. I can honestly say that there isn’t one aspect of
camp I don’t miss. To all my campers out there, I miss all of
you and I hope you’re having a wonderful 2012/13 school year
and return for CK-NJ 2013!
Whooody Whooody, Campus Kids! I hope everyone is adjusting
back to the school year and not missing camp too much.
As for me, I have had a big adjustment change since the end of
camp! A few weeks after camp ended, I started my first fulltime
job as a middle school math teacher in Hillsborough, NJ. I
have been working very hard for my students to learn and understand
different mathematical topics. For all you math nerds,
the first unit I am teaching is about adding and subtracting positive
and negative number using different methods. My job has
been very fun, but very time consuming!
On the first day of school, I was delighted to see a friendly
camper’s face as I walked along the sidewalk. She greeted me
as “Alexa” and I had to correct her to say “Ms. Lindenberg”
while we’re not at camp!
Although I miss camp very much, keeping in touch with my
camp friends and all of you gets me through. I think about
camp very often! Many of the skills that help me to be a good
teacher are skills that I have learned from working and being at
camp! I use our camp philosophy a lot while I am planning
lessons and dealing with different situations in my new environment.
And, as a counselor for the juniors, I have learned
what topics interest 7 th grade students, which I can incorporate
into different math problems.
I hope you are all enjoying school and learning as much as I
am this year! My Campus Kids adventure may be put on pause
for the moment, but the amazing memories and friends are always
in play. I look forward to hearing from you all and seeing
you at the reunion!
Love always,
Hey everyone, Claire here writing a wee something
all the way from Scotland! Can’t believe it’s already
been a month since camp ended and not a day passes
where I don’t miss it like crazy… especially all the
lovely Who Crew girlies!
After camp ended Stu, Mike J (MJ) and I set off on a
little East coast adventure, which was the best fun
ever! First we travelled to Philadelphia, then on to
Washington DC, Boston and New York. We crammed in
as much touristy sightseeing as possible and collectively
must have taken thousands of photos! With being an
architecture student I also got to see lots of pretty cool
buildings! A few other councillors met us along the way
which was great to have some American tour guides. A
big highlight for me was going to see a Phillies game
(we loved the cheesiness!!), but also just making so
Hey there, Campus Kids,
Just moved back into my university house here in
Wales and have already set up my shrine to my
American Summer. It keeps getting funny looks off
the housemates but I know they’ll never understand
camp unless they actually go.
Finally getting back into the swing of things, I’m
in my final year now at university and got a few volunteer
jobs going but I’ve also got a job where I
interview people who want to go to America to go
work at a camp like I did! It’s up to me to show
them how much of a great time they’ll have, which
shouldn’t be hard.
I also did a fencing competition last weekend
which went really well. I put it down to my special
training at Campus Kids in the basement of Armstrong-Hipkins.
While I was there I met a guy who
taught fencing at CK-Minisink this summer and can’t
believe I just bumped into him at a competition, although
I was wearing a staff shirt at the time. I
seem to be wearing the staff tops a lot even though
I’m trying to get back into the ‘real world’, but I
can’t help it the colour goes so well with my eyes.
Anyway, make sure you have a brilliant year.
Cheerio for now,
Thank you!
many unforgettable memories with great friends.
I arrived back in Scotland to a cold, rainy morning
but it was amazing to hear other Scottish accents again.
I am now back at university in a little city called Dundee
which is lots of fun but after being in cities like
New York its crazy how small everything seems. It’s
also weird swapping my shorts and t-shirts of camp for
woolly jumpers and umbrellas. Everyday I find myself
telling random stories from camp... I have my flatmates
singing Taylor Swift and doing highs and lows every
night!
When everyone asks me how my summer was I always
reply saying it was the best experience of my life.
Hope everyone’s having lots of fun! Miss you all!
Hey Campus Kids!!!!—Or, if I wanted to try and fit into my new homeland
I’d say “good’ay mate” to each and every one of you! I am currently
writing to you guys from the sunny Down Under, where winter is
just turning to spring and I have been busy exploring every adventure
there is to find here in Sydney, Australia. As I’d just graduated college
and had no real plans after camp I figured what better way to expand
my horizons than spend a year in one of the most beautiful and
exciting cities in the world.
I am sitting out on the balcony of my apartment as I write this to
you all, looking out at the city and a fantastic place called Darling Harbour
(you can see the Sydney Opera House from the harbour; Nemo
says hello!) Each day here has been a new surprise as I’ve been wandering
the city and trying to gain some perspective on my surroundings
without getting too lost—we thought malls in New Jersey were huge,
just wait until you see the ones here!
As exciting as my new adventure is, however, of course it doesn’t
even compare to how much I miss camp, Blair,
the bowl, and all of you! I hope everyone has
had an amazing start to the school year, especially
to my three graduated staffies who are
now well into their college application process—
good luck boys! Don’t forget to dance it out, go
for a walk and breathe as this school year
moves into full force, but most importantly
don’t forget to keep in touch.
Much love,
Hey CK!! It's Pesin checking in from the wonders of Lewisburg, PA!! I'm literally in the middle of no−
where, so it gives me a lot of time to think about things. I'm constantly finding myself thinking
about camp and all of the great times that I had this summer. It gives me a reason to smile and
gets me through some of the dull days. But enough about that. A little bit about what I've been
up to since camp. In short, it's been nothing but school for me. I drove back out to Bucknell the
Monday of the hypothetical Week 9 (On that note, congrats to Sills for winning the Week 9 Ro−
Sham−Bo Tournament, his first victory all year) and got myself right back into the swing of college
life. It's so much fun, but at times there is nothing that would make me happier than being back on
Blair's campus in shorts and a t−shirt (I'm currently freezing in a sweatshirt and jeans...). I'm getting
involved in a bunch of different things, such as a fraternity that I joined and a service project
group, and I am being kept very busy by it all. Anyways, I hope that all of your school years have
started off well and that the great memories of camp are still fresh in all of your minds. Make
sure you all stay in touch with your counselors and bunkmates and I'll hope that I make it out to
NJ in December for the Reunion!! Take it easy.
Hey Campus Kids! It's Rayna; the Team A staff
assistant you all miss so dearly! Kidding, kidding.
Don't worry I won't start this off asking you how the rest
of your summer and the start of your school year has
been. I know all of us would much rather be at camp! I
mean, is that even a question? I sure would rather be
at Blair; eating in the dining hall and singing with all of
you every week night! It definitely beats sitting in my
room, doing homework, and eating another boring bowl
of mac & cheese (maybe I should start adding some
variety to my dinners….). Waking up is not quite as
eventful as it was, when the Who Crew ruled the halls.
But hey, at least no one is racing for the chance to snag
an empty shower!
Even with that said, I do hope you all had a fantastic
end to your summers and are enjoying the start of
the school year! When I wasn't sulking around the
house and being camp sick, the rest of my summer was
awesome. I went on vacation, hung out with my
friends, and got to start horseback riding again, which
was the only thing I missed a lot while working at CK
this summer. As some of you may know, I moved to
Westfield in August, which not only meant a new house
and a new town, but a new high school too! It has been
P.O. Box 8, Madison, NJ 07940
pretty cool so far, kinda like being a camper for the first
time again! With tons of new people and experiences,
but it definitely isn't as fun and is a little scary too. One
awesome part about it is getting to see a lot of my fellow
staff assistants and even some campers everyday!
Shout out to Zoe for being EXTREMELY enthusiastic
whenever she sees me in the hallway! I love seeing
everyone, it has definitely made the switch a lot more
fun!
I know, as I'm writing this, it's only been 1 month
6 days 20 hours 47 minutes and 54 seconds since a lot
of us were partying at CampStock.. not that I'm counting…psh…but
it feels like it's been years. I miss you all
a ton and I hope you have been marking your calendars
for December 2nd, THE DAY WE ALL FINALLY RE-
UNITE, because I can't wait to see everyone. For those
of you who are still struggling with extreme camp sickness,
no worries, you will be packing your bags and
heading off to Blair Academy in no time! : )
I hope to see you all at the reunion!
