Dear Campus Kids,
On Tuesday we were doing everything we
could to pour water on each other, but on Wednesday
we were trying to avoid getting wet in the rain. Now
that’s weird. But wait! The official weirdness came on
Thursday night during our now-annual Weird Show. Of
course, throwing metal washers at a small wooden box
with a plastic pipe sticking up in the middle is
completely normal, just like having a bunch of 20something
counselors tell me how “old” they felt when
the Ultimate Specialty campers beat them in their
much-anticipated competition.
I laugh to myself that we label just one of
our activities “weird”. Someone once told me that
they think of Campus Kids as the “goofy camp”, which I
took as a compliment (I think it was meant that way!).
Whether “weird” or “goofy” or just “not
normal”, our campers and staff do put a creative twist
on everything and are never afraid of trying something
new. Our best and most popular activities are those
that are not quite normal. They are traditional
activities that counselors and campers have added a
some creative variations to, or completely new
activities that nobody had heard of until they started
doing them here at camp.
The unexpected is normal here and you never
quite know what’s next. What is completely expected,
though, is that every day is fun, and that’s how Week
6 has been. I hope you had as much fun as I did and
that you’ll forgive me for shooting you so many times
(as I have forgiven you all for those thousands of
gallons of water poured on me).
We’re really going to miss a bunch of our
campers who are leaving today; we’ll see you at the
December 4th reunion. And we’re excited that even
more new campers are joining us on Monday. Have a
great weekend, everybody! Be happy, be safe, be
kind, and expect the unexpected.
Can you believe it’s been six weeks already?! I sure can’t.
My second year as a staff assistant has been filled with
some pretty amazing things: talent shows, water world, lots
of tie dying, spending time with great people. However, as
Week Six comes to a close, I find myself feeling sentimental.
One thing that we as staff assistants have done this summer
is attend bunk meetings, and I could not be happier that
I’ve gotten to experience this (shout out to the SuperNova
Girls, the Super Sonic Sistars, and the Lil Dupers whose bunk
meetings I had the pleasure of attending!). As a Staffie, I
don’t get to spend a whole lot of quality time with campers
(especially during bunk meeting time because Staff Assistants
have their own bunk meetings every night!!); so when the
idea of attending bunk meetings was brought up, I was
thrilled. I thought it would be great to just hang out and
pretend to be a camper again, if only for a little while. But
the three bunk meetings I attended were so much more
than just a good time; they turned out to be educational
and incredibly interesting! I loved seeing how each bunk
group has a different style, and how each puts their own
spin on classic bunk meeting activities, like Highs and Lows.
The best part of all though was seeing the relationships
between campers and the great friendships that have been
formed. It was just two nights ago that I sat in the fourth floor hallway
of Insley, the same place I sat two summers ago with my old bunk
group, with the Duper girls having a heart to heart. Enter my feelings
of sentimentality. It’s crazy to me that seven years have gone by since
I spent my first summer at Campus Kids. It’s crazy to me that I’m now
17, a second year staff assistant, and not an 11-year-old sophomore
doing drama games and gladiator. It’s crazy to me how fast these seven
summers have gone and how many unbelievable experiences I’ve had.
And what’s even crazier is that it’s all coming to an end. Of course, you
might think I’m being dramatic and maybe I am a little bit. Next summer
I’ll be preparing for college so I’ll definitely be busy. But I think
that’s the scariest part. Something about leaving camp for a year seems
to solidify the fact that I’m growing up. Ahh, enough with being sentimental…we
still have two weeks left and I guarantee that they’re going
to be nothing short of amazing! But before I go, I just want to encourage
everyone to reflect on their time at camp…it will be sure to make
you smile! P.S. shout out to the nurses…YOU ROCK!
Forms Library Don’t ever hesitate to call/write us with
questions, but also don’t forget that the “Forms Library” of
our website has lots of helpful information, including the
comprehensive Parent Handbook.
Feedback We love getting feedback about camp from
parents and campers and hope you will call or write at any
time with either positive or negative feedback. More for-
This week in fine arts has
been a busy one. Comic
strip filled this Sundial,
while Drawing made
many beautiful chalk
drawings. Arts and crafts
successfully resurrected candle making
in the form of rolled and cut out
candles. You made peace signs, flowers,
ice cream cones, and even cakes
into candles. It was truly inspiring to
watch each of you taking something like
candle making that seems to only have
one way to be done and transforming it
into hundreds of unique processes and
projects.
Siegecraft and Rocketry have once
again turned into rocket launch and fortification,
and if the war zone I walked
through today is any indication our
catapults are only getting better and
better. Tie dye had a rough time with
all the rain, but you prevailed. Even
though we had to do tie dye inside on
tarps, you all managed to make vibrant
tie dye without also tie dying the art
room, yourselves, or your counselors.
The fancy outfits you wore to the Weird
Show were amazing! It was really great
to see you decked out in all your fashion,
jewelry making, fashion accessories,
and advanced jewelry projects! All
your ceramics pieces turned out beautifully!
If yours did not dry out enough
to make it into the kiln do not despair!
I hope you still took your project
home. Even though the projects are
delicate they are still worth saving!
mally, we’re going to be sending you a survey later in August
that we hope you will send back. It will be a big help
as we begin to make our plans for next summer.
2012 We have two amazing weeks of the 2011 camp season
left, but for those of you wanting to look ahead, camp
dates next summer will be June 25 to August 17. Special
“Priority Enrollment” materials will be sent only to current
camp families in mid-August.
Reunion is December 4 Save the date.

Hello Campus
Kids!
As we close out
Week Six, we also say
goodbye to Session
Three. Sometimes
when we say goodbye to
things we get sad, which is completely
understandable, however at
camp, we must look back on all the good
times we had. Being sad about leaving
camp is a good thing because it means
camp has done something for you. For
many of you, coming to camp means
doing activities that you have never done
before and trying new things out… for
others, camp is about improving on your
skills and getting better with practice.
We had a great session and an
even better week. The super seniors had
an extremely entertaining lip sync and
the seniors showed their magnificent
creativity with their choreography.
While sitting in the audience, I said
to Teri that it is so amazing how we encourage
our campers to get on stage and
find their inner performer. You all
show your talents and abilities to conform
to different situations which proves
that you are willing to face challenges
that you may encounter.
Thursday night we all watched
the infamous weird show, all of the performers
did a phenomenal job which you
should be very proud of.
Each week it is so hard to
write about only a few things because so
much goes on in the Solar Sisters! I love
you all very much, if you are leaving
have an amazing rest of the summer, we
hope to see you again soon so keep in
touch! Any new comers to our Solar
Sister family… WELCOME — we cannot
wait to see you!!!!!! Have a fun and
safe weekend!
Much love,
Is it really the end of week 5 already?! Time is really going
by fast! Well, hello everyone! My name is Kelcy Bifani
and I’m a staff assistant on Team A. *Shout out to all my
awesome team A-ers.* This summer has been fantastic! I
really can’t believe that it’s more than half way over.
Here are some fun facts about camp!
You know you go to Campus Kids when…
• Your legs are sore from walking up and down the bowl
everyday
• It’s completely normal to randomly shout “SHAKE YOUR
BOOTY!”
• You know the CK version of “Happy Birthday”
• Frito Pie is a staple of your diet
• You know what the Sundial is
• You know what Ro-Sham-Bo is
• Ultimate Frisbee isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle
• Singing at meals is encouraged
• You clap for any sort of occurrence
• M.O.B. isn’t an angry group of people
• It’s normal to kill someone with a sock
• Playing kickball with kiddie pools is fantastic
• The entire staff participates in a Salsa dance routine
• Everyone’s a winner!!
HI,
Cherie Ward here! I was an Office Assistant in
2000 & 2002 and now am back for 2011, here at Campus
Kids NJ. I loved every minute of it. Every summer since
2002, I wished I was here at Campus Kids, instead of Las
Vegas. It is always very hot and dry there. Although the
desert can be beautiful, I like the beautiful green trees
and all of the animals I see every day here. I was a casino
dealer & supervisor off and on for the past 21 years. It
was a great job, meeting people from all over the world.
But there just isn’t anything like Campus Kids in Las Vegas.
I recently retired and moved to Newton Falls Ohio. I
love the four seasons and plan to stay here in the East
(SOMEWHERE). I love to work for Campus Kids and hope
to be back next summer!
Hello Campus Kids!
The Insley Ball tournament came to a
dramatic conclusion, as we had to wait for
the outcomes of the semi-finals and the
finals until Friday! I admit that I was a little
nervous about how the tournament was going
to go because it’s such a new sport at camp, but the turnout was fantastic
and the games were incredible!! Good Luck to team West, who made it
to the finals, and also to those in the semi-finals, who will be playing after
the deadline for this Sundial — Annie and Freeman!
We are planning some very special events for the end of the week
that I'm extremely excited about!! First we are going to be wrapping up the
Insley ball tournament on Friday! So far the tournament has had some very
intense games only winning by a few and showing a lot of talent from every
age range. I'm very excited to see how the rest of the tournament plays out!
We also have a fabulous DOUBLE PERIOD SOFTBALL GAME planned! We are
going to have lots of watermelon to eat and music to enjoy as we play softball
down at the famous double period softball field! I hope that everyone
enjoyed the Weird Show on Thursday, I know that I personally loved all the
talented campers in the drum, dance, cheerleading, and gymnastic acts.
It's very sad for me to say that the end of this session is here, because
I will have to say goodbye to a lot of you that I've loved getting to
know throughout your time here at camp. But as I look back, I can't help but
smile by seeing each and every one of you at activities either trying new
sports, or flashing your skills in familiar areas for the rest of the camp to
see. If I could leave you with one thought at the end of this Sundial article, I
would tell you all to look forward to every day and each opportunity it
brings to get outside of your comfort zone and try new things! You never
know what could soon become your next favorite thing!
The Best Things About Being on the
CKNJ Staff
Hey everybody!
My name is Russ Israel and this is my first
year being on the CKNJ staff (as a staff
assistant). Everything about being on the
staff is great, but there are several aspects
of the job that I would like to bring to
your attention. Here they are!
1. Keys- Having keys makes you feel so
powerful. Holding your keycard up
to the sensor and then hearing the
click of the door unlocking is an exhilarating
experience. It makes you
feel like you have unlimited access
to everywhere on campus. Plus
twirling them is just too much fun!
2. Pizza Nights-Every Tuesday and
Wednesday nights 12 pizza pies are
delivered to Annie Hall. The staff
devours the pizza as though they
have never seen food before in
their lives. The pizza tastes so
much better after a long hard day
of work.
3. Exclusive sneak peaks-Being on the
staff, you truly get to see what
happens behind the scenes of all the fun
being had. For example, before “water
world”, many staff members helped fill
up water balloons and “kiddie” pools that
campers would later peg at each other
and dive into. It is amazing how much
work gets done in one day in the office.
Then watching all the campers enjoy
what we’ve worked so hard to create is
an amazing experience.
4. The Family- Everyone on the staff is so
kind, warm, and welcoming. And that is
greatly appreciated when it is your first
year on the staff. On the staff, you
feel the presence of a family. You feel
like you’re a part of something bigger
than yourself. Everyone is doing very
different jobs, but all the employees’
work creates something beautiful and
organized. Just like a family must work
together to be happy, we must work together
to make camp happen, and for
everybody to have fun.
Sometimes when I'm at camp, I start to think about camp
stuff. I know, I know, but just hear me out on this one. The
best part about camp isn't necessarily the friends or the games
or the fun; rather, it is the things you learn that truly make this a
special place. Going to school and learning math and whatnot
is all well and good, but here we get to Campus Kids we can
expand our minds beyond that which can be summed up in integers.
For instance, this week alone I
learned that nighttime rain makes dizzybat
kickball into an epic competition between
gladiators of legend, and that a
water pistol can turn a kiddie pool into
the staging ground for an aquatic coup
d'etat; luckily, Tom had TWO water
guns. If it wasn't for the Weird Show, I
wouldn't know how to play the recorder.
And, most importantly, this week
I learned who would win in a steamboat race between Mark
Twain and a lizard. This alone makes me think that the state's
standard algebra curriculum needs to be rewritten, since I always
got that question wrong on the test. Now if you'll excuse
me, I need to take a break and enjoy some delicious late-night
pizza (hold the catfish).
Hey CK Family!
Abe here from the Galactic Empire. What a session we've
had this time around! For the first time this summer, the
weather's been not just nice, but down right gorgeous, and
we've been making the most of it!! It's been the kind of
week where I walk around campus and am in awe of how
beautiful this place is and how lucky we are to be here.
Just from one point in the bowl, I can see kids playing our
new game, washers, tie dye t-shirts gently blowing in the
breeze as they hang off the line, rockets shooting off,
guitar classes, and digital photography and creative writing
there to document it all. And to think, that's just one
tiny piece of everything that's happening at any given
moment here! Not to mention that we capped off this
session with the Weird Show, one of my new favorite
camp traditions. Thank you to everyone who made the
first three sessions as wonderful as they were, we'll miss
you to all who are heading home, and
for those of us just coming now, get
excited because fourth session is going
to be campsto-- ahem...I mean, amazing!
Hey CK Universe! The Ultimate Frisbee Specialty
program has been flying during Weeks 5
and 6 at camp. It seems customary in the
Sundial for counselors (especially from foreign
countries) to share words from their region of
the world and explain their meaning in English
(or New Jerseyean for most of us)! So, I
thought I would explain some common terms
heard in the Ultimate Frisbee Specialty. After
all, it is a foreign sport to many people:
1) "I'm going to break you" - don't worry, it
does not mean that anybody will get
hurt. "Break" means to break the defense
so that means you will beat the defender
by throwing to the far side of the field.
2) "Hammer Time" - yet again, don't worry,
it does not mean that anybody will get
hurt. In addition, it has nothing to do
with an awful 90's "musical" artist either.
Hammer is an overhead throw that
goes upside down!
3) "Scoober Yeah" - So, a scoober is an upside
throw released from the side of your
head. The word is just awesome. Try
saying it at home! "Scoober, Scoober." It
is so awesome, that Owen thinks you
should put the word "Yeah" after it. He
also is starting a clothing company that
has "Scoober Yeah" all over it.
So, there are three sayings you hear on the
Ultimate field often and their meanings. Have
a good weekend and see you all on Monday
(including you Russ).
Belline Out!
Do you want your
story, poem, or artwork
in the Sundial next
week? To submit a
piece to be published,
you can:
1. drop it off in the
Sundial Boxes in
Annie Hall or the
Art Room
2. give your submission
to Teri
3. Send an email to:
Hi camp people! Once again this is Brooke,
the Camper Support Coordinator, sending you
a transmission from the Satellite of Love in
orbit around camp. This week I’ve been orbiting
around a camp that’s been crawling
with activity! We ran amuck all Tuesday at
WATER WORLD chasing each other with
water guns, hoses, and cups full to the brim
with water! Some of us got to slip n’ slide down the giant, amazingly
fun water slide; I had fun playing ‘Drip, drip, drop!’ with some
speedy campers, while other bunk groups had a ball at Water Balloon
Volleyball! But that’s not all that had Campus Kids stirring this
week; On Thursday evening we had the WEIRD SHOW and Fancy
Pants Night! Everyone wore their handmade finery, foppery, jewelry
and other accessories that they had made in fashion accessories
to the WEIRD SHOW! You all looked absolutely fabulous! The
WEIRD SHOW was totally out of this world. The acts were phenomenal
and I could tell that everyone had put a lot of effort into
rehearsing. Whew! What another great week at Campus Kids. It’s
so satisfying to be able to look back on your time here, week after
week, and say ‘Wow! I had a great week!’ Only here at Camp do I
find myself saying that every Friday without fail. Sure, here and
there are a couple lows, like when there is no mint chocolate chip
ice cream at dinner or when Tom goes sky diving but doesn’t take
you, but the week on a whole is always happy and good. I hope that
you find yourself feeling satisfied and happy when you have to
leave us. I know that ‘Goodbye’ is a sad phrase to say, but remember
that it’s sad because of the happy times that you have had
here. So think of those happy days and look forward to even more
of those times in Weeks 6 & 7! We have so much fun left to have
and so many more memories to make; be happy! Transmission complete.
We Six marks the end of another session,
To repeat it I’d give all my possessions.
Monday was beautiful, the sun was shining,
Ice cream for lunch is what we’re always pining.
Tuesday was one of the biggest days yet!
Devon or Rose? Sometimes I I even forget.
Later there wasn’t a dry person in sight;
From games, kickball, and huge water fight!
Water World was so good it deserves two rhymes.
Did you see Tom? I think he got me 10 times!
Wednesday the Juniors performed a movie spoof,
Extra points or being silly and a goof
The “Weird Show” consists of Dance, Salsa, and,
Cheerleading/Drums/Gymnastics. Oh what a plan!
If today happens to be your last Friday,
Don’t waste the day making it a cry day.
It’s not “goodbye,” but it’s “until next time,”
And for you, my girls, I dedicate this rhyme.
IGP,
I hate to say “so long” to everyone leaving! This week especially
has been a blast in the dorms. Also, everyone has been
so enthusiastic for the special events and evening activities!
All of you understand the spirit of camp and the importance
of letting go and having fun. I know how hard it can be to
put yourselves out there and try new things, but I hope you
find that it is worth the effort! My summer would definitely
not be as amazing without all of your smiling faces in the
that CK 2011 would not be the same without you as well!
Hey CK,
Ben here, one of the counselors of the
sophomore boys group the, “Parking Meteors.”
I’ve had a great summer here so far!
One of the reasons I’m enjoying it is because
I get to share ideas and activities I’m passionate
about. One of my favorite activities
is the Spanish Club where we try to teach
Spanish in a fun way. During one session we
had a lot of fun writing a really ridiculous
skit. In the skit each camper wrote one line
of the skit then we acted it out. I’d like to
thank all the campers who put themselves
out there and participated in this! Here is
the skit first in Spanish then English:
La Bailadora Raquel era una bailadora muy
Buena de salsa. Ella practicó y practicó hasta
que logro todos sus pasos. Aunque practicó
tanto y logró todo aun era la peor
bailadora del mundo. Luego se hizo una
bailadora Buena pues un tigre comió su pie
izquierda. Se mejoró y poco después bailó
sobre un, “cliff,”. Sin embargo un doctor la
encontró y ayudó. Despues tuvo que ir al
bano . Despues de usarlo se encontró conun
hombre guapisimo que se llamaba Spencer.
Translation:
The dancer named Rachel was a good salsa
dancer. She practiced and practiced until
she got all her moves down. Even though
she practiced so much she was still the worst
salsa dancer in the world. Soon after she become
a good dancer and then a tiger ate her
left foot. She became better and danced off
a cliff. Next a doctor helped her and she got
better. Then she had to go to the bathroom.
After using the bathroom she found herself
next to a really handsome man named
Spencer.
Hey Everyone!
I thought I would take this time to talk about the session’s shows and giving you an interesting puzzle as well.
Last week we had the Talent Show, hosted by Danny, Jason, Doug, Adam, and Ryan. Produced by the famous
blockbuster directors Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay, the show was a non-stop thrill ride full of all the different
talent our campers have. We laughed, we cried, we were entertained from beginning to end.
This week we had the Weird Show, hosted by the leadership team. The weird show consisted of all the different
age groups performing in the areas of Dance, Gymnastic, Drums and Cheerleading. Dance was represented by a
range of styles from hip hop, salsa, and even cheerleading. Gymnastics had people tumbling from all levels of expertise,
from beginner to expert. Drums showcased the younger and older kids with a style similar to Stomp or The
Blue Man Group by banging on chairs and confetti covered drums.
It was a session filled with practice and hard work to both showcase our strengths and our new found passions!
And now for a fun word search!
Words to find: Bass, Cartwheel, Cymbal, Dance, Drama, Drums, Guitar, Improv, Theatre, Tumble, Yoga
Water World
By: Anonymous
We all got wet…
But no one did sweat
Fun was had by all…
Better than the mall
Tom was in the water fight
To the campers
he gave a fright
It was sad
when the clock struck 5
And water world
could no longer thrive
Next year we should
do this again….
I’m so excited and
can’t wait ‘till then!
Have a great weekend and see you on Monday!
Would you rather……
Swimming, Swimming, In The Swimming Pool…
Hello again, and what an amazing week it has been here
at CKNJ!!! From Water World day, to The Weird Show and everything
in between it has been one stellar week! For this week;s
Sundial however, I want to give you an idea of what it is our counselors
are teaching in swim instruction based on the Skills Checklist
according to the American Red Cross. Though we teach Levels
1-6, this is the Level 5 Skills checklist our counselors follow
during instructional swim (which is provided to all of our swim
instructors, and varies according to the level they teach). Campers
must be able to do all of the following to pass Level 5.
• Shallow-angle dive from the side (in water at least 9 feet
deep)
• Shallow-angle dive from blocks
• glide 2 body lengths and begin any front stroke
• Tuck surface dive- submerging completely
• Pike surface dive- submerging completely
• Front flip turn while swimming
• Backstroke flip turn while swimming
• Tread water- 5 minutes
• Front crawl- 50 yards
• Breaststroke- 25 yards
• Butterfly- 25 yards
• Elementary backstroke- 50 yards
• Back crawl- 25 yards
• Standard scull- 30 seconds
• Sidestroke- 25 yards.
This is only one of the levels being taught at camp, and although
OR
OR
OR
Eat the same
thing for every
meal all week? OR
Try a new activity
that none of
your bunkmates
are doing?
Have ice cream
for dinner?
Have extreme
RAIN
Swim 25 laps in
the pool every
day for a week?
it may seem somewhat confusing (depending on your experience
with swim lingo), our counselors have been doing an amazing job
breaking it down for the kids as I have seen drastic improvements
of many of our campers skills, not only our Level 5 swimmers, but
swimmers in all other levels being taught as well!!
Swimming is not the only area where there has been
amazing improvements of skills and accomplishments. Our slackliners,
or "slackers" as I like to call them, have been making step,
after step, after step and have virtually mastered their center of
balance on the line, which is no easy feat. And as for our archers
that continue to sign up for archery, their technique as well as
their accuracy has been improving day by day. Sooo exciting to
see them nailing bull's-eyes and giving advice to those who are
new to archery, and useful advice at that. Not to mention our
counselors who are giving our campers the skills necessary to
accomplish some of these tasks!
I could not be more excited with the progress being
made in all of these activities, and am sorry to have to say
goodbye to those of you who will be leaving us for the summer!!!
You campers are what makes us, as counselors and
coordinators alike, strive to be our best at everything we do
so you can all have the most amazing experience of your
life! And I know, it's because of you campers, that I have
had some of the most amazing and memorable experiences of
my life here at camp!!! I will miss you all and wish you well over
the course of the year!!!!!
Until next time,
Hello Campus Kids,
It’s Andrew Imbalzano
here again! This summer
is going by so
quickly, it felt like just
yesterday that Week 5
had just begun…… So I
just thought I’d end
this session with a
quick recap of all the
fun things that happened
these past two
weeks. Thing is… I
can’t just GIVE you the
answers! If anyone
brings me a completed
crossword,
they’ll get a prize.
Enjoy,
Andrew Imbalzano
I don’t have much space
this week for the Parents’ Corner,
partly because so much is
happening at camp that we need
the rest of the “Sundial” to tell
you about it.
Let me use this space
to answer a common question from parents: “What happens
when my child is too old for Campus Kids?” The first part of
that answer is that we all cry because we really miss our
campers when they “graduate”. Many of them we have
known since they were little freshmen, but all of them have
become important parts of our family and we hate to see
them go.
The next opportunity to be a formal part of camp is
to become a “staff assistant”, which 15 lucky former camp-
ers can do each summer. Our website has complete information
about this and we’ll give you more details in a future
“Sundial”. Those who are interested have until November
1st to submit an application.
Our camp does not have CIT’s or Junior Counselors,
so the next opportunity to be part of camp is by applying to
be a counselor and applicants must be at least 18 years old
and have completed a year of college (or other post-high
school experience). Information for this is also on the website.
We’ll be giving you more details in future newsletter
issues and you can always find current information on
our website. Of course, give us a call if you want to chat
about these opportunities.
Hi everyone,
Koen here, I'm a Duper counselor. My group is
called Solar System of a Down. I'm gonna tell you
guys why we named our group Solar System of a
Down.
It all started during orientation week; Ste, John and
I had to pick our bunk group name. Ste is a returning
counselor and all the years he's been here he
named his bunk group after a band he liked. We
had a few different ideas like Battlestar Metallica
and 30 seconds to Mars. One was definitely the
best: Solar System of a Down. The name comes
from the band System of a Down which is an awesome
metal band.
These last 7 weeks have been the best weeks of
my life. I'm so glad I had the privilege to meet all
you kids (and counselors of course). This camp is
amazing; better than all my expectations.
And, now, for a little Dutch 101:
Hi = hallo
How are you = hoe gaat het
See you soon = tot ziens
I hope you have a great weekend!
Hey everyone, Yianella here, one
of the counselors for the senior
girls’ group, The Rockettes! It’s
been such an amazing week at
Campus kids. We finished out the
Insley Ball Tournament, made
really cool wax candles and many
of us performed in the second
annual ‘Weird Show’! One of my
favorite activities to teach here is
Salsa, so this year I choreographed
a Salsa number for the
super seniors. We’ve gotten such
good feedback from their stellar
performance that I thought I’d include
a quick tutorial on the basic
salsa 8-count.
Before we begin, an important
thing to remember is that the Salsa
count is different than in regular
dance. Instead of counting 1, 2, 3
through 8, Salsa skips counts 4
and 8. So, it’s counted 1, 2, 3
(Pause) 5, 6, 7 (Pause). Always
remember to shift your weight from
one hip to the other and to not be
afraid to incorporate your shoulders!
Step one: (Counts 1, 2, 3)
Step-forward with your right foot
Step two: (Silent Count 4)
Back to the center
Step three: (Counts 5, 6, 7)
Step back with your left foot
Step four: (Silent Count 8)
Back to the center
And repeat
You can also do this
basic step. side to side:
Step one: (Counts 1, 2, 3)
Step to the right
Step two: ( Silent Count 4)
Back to the enter
Step three: ( Counts 5, 6, 7)
Step to the left
Step four: ( Silent Count 8)
Back to the center
and repeat.
