As far as the swell goes,
here’s what happens in
Southern California — a big
storm in the Aleutians had
brewed seas of more than 40
feet, sending massive bands of
energy out in several directions.
Right in line for one of
those bands is Hawaii, that
receives the Alaskan gift each
winter, usually from late
December through February.
Waves are also sent to the
The next campaign was
in the form of freeway billboards
that were in both
English and Spanish and
remained up for one month in
January 2009, according to
said San Diego County
Deputy District Attorney
Dominic Dugo.
One of the billboards featured
a man working with a
hammer with words that read:
“Does Your Employer Have
Workers’ Comp? It’s the Law!”
The other billboard was a
picture of a man behind bars
with a warning against workers’
comp fraud.
Rebecca Thomas, of
Carlsbad, was also at the
UltraStar on Nov. 8, and after
several minutes of thinking
about the movie previews, she
did remember seeing an ad
that had a man in handcuffs.
“It was super fast,” she
said. “I don’t know what it
was about.”
The ads shown on the-
CBM CARLSBAD
aters scattered across the
county depict the same slogan
and images as the billboards.
Dugo said that anti-fraud
posters were also distributed
in 2009 for employers to hang
in the workplace.
“When there’s an economic
downturn, people that
tend to be financially stressed
may commit fraud,” Dugo
said. “We’re seeing an explosion
in real estate and insurance
fraud.”
Dugo said the anti-fraud
messages are geared toward
the people who may commit
insurance fraud for the very
first time due to financial
stress.
Some examples of insurance
fraud include employees
faking injuries or employers
denying claims, he said.
“For auto insurance, it’s
typically someone who sells
their vehicle to (someone in)
Mexico and reports it stolen
to the insurance company,”
he said.
Another way people commit
automobile insurance
south, sometimes taking direct
hits in the Pacific Northwest,
moving down like a hose with a
kink in it, until it trickles onto
our beaches. The further north
the swell originates, the less
surf will hit us. This is due to
obstacles like the Santa
Barbara Channel Islands, and
jutting fingers of land like
Point Conception, that pinch
off much of the swell.
If a swell forms further
west than north, we in
Southern California have a
much better chance of receiving
more surf. Still, our conti-
Foundation; and Alexis Parker,
Thus far, Casa de Amparo
has raised $11.3 million of the
$16 million needed for the
Strategic Capital Campaign,
project and we apologize for
the inconvenience this closure
and detour creates,”
City Engineer Mike Edwards
said. “These road closures,
however, will greatly accelerate
the project’s completion.”
nental shelf, which extends for
about a mile in our area, cuts
down wave size greatly. Not
that I’m complaining. I, and I
suspect most of you, enjoy the
gentle ride produced by small
clean surf. Plus, most of the
sandbars and reefs in North
County close out when the surf
gets much beyond five feet.
This swell was no exception, as
beach break waves peaked and
fell on the horizon, kept good
form for a while and unloaded
in one straight line for hundreds
of yards, offering no
place for a surfer to go, except
including a $2 million
Challenge Grant from The
Leichtag Family Foundation
and $600,000 from the Price
Family Charitable Foundation.
The gap is currently $4.7 million,
although a construction
loan from Wells Fargo will
roundabouts and other related
road improvements along
fraud is when they let their
car insurance policy lapse.
Dugo said that for the
past one to two years there
has been an increase in this
particular crime, and that it
has become quite common.
“In California, if you
drive a car you are required
by law to have car insurance,”
he said.
But people are letting
their policy lapse in order to
save money, yet they continue
to drive, he said.
The fraud occurs when
an uninsured vehicle is stolen
or damaged, such as in an
accident, and the owner then
buys a new policy and lies
about the date of the theft or
damage and makes a claim,
he said.
with it optimism for an early
EAGLE RANK
David Edwards, of the Santa Margarita Boy Scout District,
has earned his Eagle rank. Edwards, 17, a member of
Troop 745 is a senior at Carlsbad High School. For his
Eagle project, Edwards built picnic tables for Buena Vista
Elementary School in Carlsbad. Edwards said his
Scoutmaster Tim Milam has helped him the most in scouting.
“Mr. Milam has been my leader since I was a Cub
Scout. He has helped me out though hard times and
coached me while I was the Senior Patrol Leader.” New
troops are now forming. Contact District Director Vic
member Dennis Doucette joined donors, community
leaders, board members and staff at the ribbon-cutting ceremony
celebrating the launch of renovations and expansion
of the Magdalena Ecke YMCA pre-school. Construction will
be done in four phases including: upgrading and remodeling
each existing classroom, constructing three new classrooms
