Compared to traditional<br />
incandescent holiday<br />
lights, LED lights can save<br />
customers up to 90 percent in<br />
holiday lighting costs. LED<br />
lights are cool to the touch,<br />
reduce fire risk, and are safer<br />
for use both inside and outside<br />
the home. <strong>The</strong>y also<br />
shine brighter and last up to<br />
100 times longer than incandescent<br />
holiday lights.<br />

Group seeks outstanding women<br />
OCEANSIDE —<br />
Soroptimist International of<br />
Oceanside/Carlsbad is now<br />
seeking applicants for its<br />
recognition program targeted<br />
for young women who make<br />
the community and world a<br />
better place. <strong>The</strong> Violet<br />
Richardson Award honors<br />
young women, between the<br />
ages of 14 and 17, for volunteer<br />
action such as fighting<br />
drugs, crime and violence;<br />
cleaning up the environment;<br />
and working to end discrimination<br />
and poverty.<br />
“As a volunteer service<br />
organization for business<br />
and professional women,<br />
Soroptimist believes that<br />
by acknowledging young<br />
women’s volunteer involvement<br />
now, they will grow up to<br />
be vital, active members of the<br />
community,” said Adele<br />
McIntosh, president of the<br />
Oceanside/Carlsbad club.<br />
Tickets for shopping benefit on sale<br />
COAST CITIES — Tickets<br />
are now on sale for the San<br />
Diego Chapter of Childhelp<br />
24th annual Holiday Fantasia.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Polynesian-themed<br />
event will start at 9:30 a.m. Nov.<br />
19 at the Park Hyatt Aviara<br />
Resort in Carlsbad. It will again<br />
offer holiday boutique shopping,<br />
with vendors and artisans<br />
donating a percentage of their<br />
sales to support Childhelp.<br />
At noon, guests can enjoy<br />
a Polynesian lunch along with<br />
Hawaiian entertainment and a<br />
presentation of For the Love of<br />
<strong>The</strong> Violet Richardson<br />
Award program begins at the<br />
local Soroptimist club level,<br />
where the type of<br />
award varies. Soroptimist<br />
International of Oceanside/<br />
Carlsbad presents a $1,500<br />
award to winners and another<br />
$500 to the charitable organization<br />
of their choice.<br />
Club-level winners then<br />
become eligible for one of 28<br />
$1,000 awards. In addition, at<br />
this level, $1,000 will be contributed<br />
in honor of the winners<br />
to their volunteer organizations.<br />
One finalist will be<br />
chosen from among the 28<br />
winners for an additional<br />
award, including a contribution<br />
of $2,500 to the finalist’s<br />
volunteer organization.<br />

award program are available<br />
at local high schools and<br />
libraries, or by contacting<br />

award goes to Don and Beth<br />
Bewley of Eufora International.<br />
<strong>The</strong> award is given each year to<br />
a local San Diegan who has<br />
made a difference in the lives<br />
of abused and neglected children<br />

and hard work. Also a special<br />
Angel Award will be presented<br />
to foster parents Jamie and<br />
Kim Thomas.<br />
<strong>The</strong> afternoon will feature<br />
more shopping and opportunities<br />
to learn about the<br />
work being done by Childhelp.<br />

named after Violet<br />
Richardson, the president of<br />
the first Soroptimist club in<br />
1921. Richardson believed in<br />
personal responsibility and<br />

that counts.” She lived her life<br />
accordingly, as an active member<br />
in her community who was<br />
committed to creating opportunities<br />
for girls and young<br />
women. Soroptimist established<br />
this award to honor the<br />
memory of this unique woman<br />
and her dedication to volunteer<br />
action.<br />
