A6 THE COAST NEWS NOV. 12, 2010 Trial set in case of deadly bar fight By Shelli DeRobertis VISTA — An Oceanside man accused of striking a deadly blow to William Hoyle’s head outside of a bar on South Coast Highway in September will stand trial for murder, according to a judge’s ruling on Oct. 27 Bruce Erwin Hamil, 35, is accused of killing Hoyle, 53, by punching him in the face, which caused Hoyle to hit the ground and lose consciousness. Hoyle died two days later, according to the Oceanside Police Department. At the preliminary hearing, according to the North County Times, Deputy District Attorney Jodi Breton said that Hamil’s blow was so powerful that it ruptured an artery in Hoyle’s brain. She said Hamil had also been responsible, at least twice, for sending people to the hospital by using his fists. Scott Smith will update the group on “Laser Technology and Your Health” Nov. 16 and on Nov. 23, the group will hear from Jeremy Metts, project director of Outside the Bowl, a nonprofit organization that helps eliminate physical TURN TO KIWANIS ON A18 Program offers kids hands-on learning By Alyx Sariol CARLSBAD — At Carlsbad’s Georgina Cole Library, kids are traveling the world and exploring different countries without ever leaving the room through Culture Crafts, a hands-on program held each month. Since 2008, hundreds of students have joined Carlsbad’s librarians for the free educational presentation, which explores cultures through folk tales, historical stories, and firsthand accounts from children in other countries. A craft project is also included. “We want to offer something that helps kids see that there are more similarities between everyone in the world than there are differences,” children’s librarian Amy Jordan said. “It helps them see the world in a broad view instead of focusing just on our community.” On Nov. 9, Jordan was joined by a group of students eager to learn about Festivals of Light celebrated around the world during the hourlong program. “I’m particularly excited about this one because it brings in many cultures instead of focusing on just one,” Jordan said. “It’s a nice kick-off to the holiday season.” Jordan researched different festivals, including Diwali in India and St. Lucia’s Day in Sweden, which were highlighted in the presentation. During the craft portion, students created rafts similar to those used in traditional Loi Krathang celebrations around Thailand. Photo by Alyx Sariol By Shelli DeRobertis OCEANSIDE — A trip to the grocery store cost $5,000 for a 72-year-old woman who was scammed for that amount on Nov. 2 when two women approached her and promised her a large return if she would invest the cash, said an Oceanside police lieutenant. The elderly victim, who remains unnamed, was at the Stater Bros. store at 2170 Vista Way when two female suspects approached her and asked for help, said Lt. Leonard Mata of the Oceanside Police Department. The suspects told the victim that they found $100,000 in a purse, and then offered the victim $25,000 if she could give them $5,000 they needed to pay the taxes on the found money, he said. Photo by Alyx Sariol her favorite, regular Culture Craft participant Madison Bunker said, “I like them all!” Culture Crafts is loosely based on an older library program, Passport to Adventure, which ended in 2007. During that program, librarians had invited community members to speak about their culture or countries they had traveled to, but the list of willing volunteers was quickly exhausted, Jordan said. Not wanting to cut the cultural learning experience from the library’s offerings, Jordan and other librarians began researching countries and cultures themselves and re-launched the program as Culture Crafts in 2008. The new format allowed for the librarians to focus more on children in other cul- proposal and returned with $5,000 cash. The two women took the money and told her they would come back after they “scanned” the money, Mata said. But, the suspects never returned. Both suspects are described to be about 45 years of age. One suspect is described as a heavyset Caucasian female with brown tures and the popular craft portion of the program. “What we’ve found is that the kids really like learning about the culture as it pertains to themselves,” Jordan said. “We tie it in so they can see that kids do things similarly to them, just in other countries; it helps them to see the world in a broad view instead of focusing just on our community.” Jordan also noted that while the library’s piratethemed and Christmas-related events always draw a crowd, the Cole librarians are hopeful that Culture Crafts will gain a loyal following too. “We’re always trying to find ways to keep kids coming back,” Jordan said. “We hope that they leave wanting to come back and learn more the next month.” Elderly woman scammed in Oceanside COAST CITIES — Fall at Kids Korps brings with it a number of volunteer opportunities to heal and protect the local natural and built environments. Through Green Korps, in the month of November, there are volunteer opportunities to clean a beach, restore a lagoon, river or other riparian habitat, tend to a community garden, protect native flora and fauna, or clean up a neighborhood. Projects in November benefit the following Kids Korps partner organizations San Diego River Park Foundation, Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation, Friends of Ruffin Canyon, San Diego Coast Keeper, Carpentier Park, Surfrider Foundation, Audubon Society, San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy or Redevelopment Agency of the city of San Diego. North County Kids Korps members can take part in La Clase Magica on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. through Nov. 29 in Solana Beach to benefit the Center for Academic and Social Advancement, or CASA. CASA is a nonprofit organization that operates bilingual and bicultural technology-based after-school programs. The mission is to academically and socially prepare children, adolescents and adults of under served communities to succeed in school and in the new realities of the 21st century.Volunteers must be 14 years old or older to participate. Youngsters can extend their hands and hearts to the homeless in our community from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 13 by helping at Brother Benno’s in the warehouse, 3260 hair. According to the California Penal Codes 514 to 515, if a person is convicted of a felony for embezzlement, and the victim was an elder adult, then a special circumstance in aggravation will be imposed. City OK’s upscale pawn shop By Promise Yee OCEANSIDE — The words “pawn shop” in the application prompted City Council members to thoroughly discuss the request for Coast Jewelry and More to open business downtown, prior to a 4-1 approval, in which Councilman Jack Feller voted no. There were numerous concerns with the type of business operation. City staff recommended the request be denied, due to police safety concerns that statistics show higher crime rates for local pawn businesses. Citizens also expressed concern. “I’m still struggling to believe a pawn shop is going to enhance the quality of life in Oceanside,” Jerry Rhoads, a downtown resident, said. “There are a lot of criminal elements associated with pawn shops,” Georgeo Kerpani, an Oceanside resident, said.“I can’t say it holds true with all pawn shops, but that’s not what I would like tourists to see.” A closer look at the business that sells and pawns jewelry proved it had high standards and a good reputation. “This is not just a pawn shop,” Tom Missett, a business consultant, said. “These applicants are outstanding and intend to be a big part of the community.” Others mentioned there is currently a raised perception of pawn shops, which are a heavily regulated industry. Business owner David Mueller will make a sizeable investment to upgrade the building the business will occupy on Coast Highway 101. “Visually this is much more acceptable than what’s there now,” Councilman Chuck Lowery said. “It can provide incentive for other businesses to come in and see what they can do.” “I got to meet the owner of the building and was impressed,” Councilwoman Esther Sanchez said. “They made this investment in Oceanside and made a commitment to this community.” The final OK came with conditions that include that 50 percent of sales be retail, hours of operation be limited, and the permit be looked at for renewal in a year.
