Kids Korps honored
for outstanding
community service
COAST CITIES —
Members of the North County
Kids Korps were honored for
their outstanding community
service Oct. 23.
On national “Make a
Difference Day,” more than 50
Kids Korps volunteers were in
attendance to receive their
Presidential Student Service
Awards, signed by President
Barack Obama, at Carpentier
Park in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
Awardees were recognized for
their outstanding service
improving communities and
making America stronger.
Those who earned more than
100 hours of service also
received the Senatorial
Certificate from Sen. Mark
Wyland, 38th District Office.
Prior to the award ceremony,
volunteers joined in a creek
cleanup at Carpentier Park.
Kids Korps members and their
parents helped with weeding,
picking up trash, planting, and
spreading wildflower seeds.
These helping hands learned
what it takes to create and
maintain an environmentally
sensitive park while providing
a community asset where there
was once dirt. The project is
just one of hundreds of Green
Korps environmental service
and habitat protection projects
annually presented by Sempra
Energy Foundation.
“At Kids Korps USA, the
spirit of giving is instilled in
youth through community volunteerism.
As youth and teens
learn the meaning of community
service, they develop leadership
skills and gain perspective
on how they can make a difference
in the world,” said
founder Joan Wafer.
“I learned to care about
other people, not just myself,”
said 11-year-old Anthony
Piglovski, the youngest Kids
Korps member to receive the
Gold Presidential Award for
volunteering 100 hours in one
year. Alexandra Scafidi is the
youngest, at age 7, to receive
the Bronze Award for giving 62
hours of her time to volunteer
in the past year.
Other Kids Korps members
who received the Gold
Presidential Student Service
Award included Joy Marsella,
Diana Burdick and Dana
Knees.
