Memorial Issue 

We are deeply thankful to all of the organizations and individuals that 

remember their membership and Loved Ones through a Memorial donation 

to the St. Louis Veterans’ Home Committee. Your generosity 

strongly impacts the growth of the Perpetual Trust Fund which will provide 

assistance for our Veterans in years to come. With so many WW II 

and Korean Veterans passing and the different organizations beginning 

to dwindle, donations are sparse. We are grateful to have such a supportive 

and devoted community and will continue to rally in this great mission 

and vision.

16 years. Betty possesses a diverse 

range of experience and has worked as 

a direct caregiver and as a restorative 

therapy aide prior to her present position 

as the “director of first impressions”.

We had a great turn out for the 

Volunteer Awards Ceremony and 

it was inspiring to meet many of 

those folks who ensure our Heroes 

are provided with lots of opportunities 

for outings and in 

house activities. This yearly event 

allows me the chance to also meet 

the various organizations and individuals 

who never actually enter 

our facility but are supportive 

in this great mission to provide 

quality services to Veterans. I 

look forward to the future with 

such a great community support 

team and hope to meet with all 

you folks on an individual basis. 

Please feel free to contact me any 

time. 

Great stuff going on within the 

facility, our back up generator 

system has passed all testing periods 

and we are confident that our 

Heroes will not be effected by a 

power outage this year or for the 

years to come. We have also 

worked out some great community 

outreach emergency assistance 

programs with skilled care 

facilities within our area. We are 

fortunate to have this kind of security 

and we would be remiss 

not to offer help to those who 

have not been afforded this much 

needed system to ensure our elderly 

are always warm, cool and 

able to receive quality skilled 

care.

Out with old and in with the new! 

New changes to the front lobby 

area. The pool table room which is 

adjacent to the front lobby was unfortunately 

not being utilized by 

our Heroes and we needed to reassess 

the use of such an important 

and focused area for our residents 

and family members. After careful 

consideration and a combined team 

effort it was decided to convert this 

room to a “Bistro Area”. The area 

will feature a juice bar which will 

target hydration needs for our residents. 

The “Bistro will also become 

a great place for our Heroes 

and their family members to gather 

and enjoy some themed activity 

and social gatherings. May first is

the date we are hoping to have 

our grand opening. Special thanks 

to Megan Martinez and our Purchasing 

and Maintenance Departments 

for their great efforts and 

hard work to make this new gathering 

place bloom from an idea 

into a reality in a short period of 

time.

During the attack one enemy tank 

seriously threatened the area in 

which Private First Class 

Almeida and his rocket launcher 

team was located. Realizing the 

seriousness of the situation, Private 

First Class Almeida exposed 

himself to attract the attention and 

fire of the enemy tank, thereby 

permitting his platoon to engage 

and repel the other tanks and infantry. 

After cleverly avoiding 

the fire from the enemy armored 

vehicle, he fired his rocket 

launcher and destroyed the enemy 

tank. This heroic act contributed 

greatly to the successful defeat of 

the enemy attack. His actions 

were in accordance with the highest 

standards of the military service.

From the mind and heart of a 

Student Veteran Volunteer. 

The lives of our Veterans have been enriched with 

the visits of many young students sharing a few 

hours of their time. The learning experiences benefits 

all involved. 

The following is a report written by Tejiri, it was 

part of a class requirement.. Tejiri happens to be the 

daughter of one of our staff who proudly serves our 

Heroes. 

The Missouri Veterans Home 

Day 1 of Volunteering 

Volunteering at the Veterans Home was actually 

really fun. Everybody there is so nice and they 

showed me around the home too. I delivered ice to 

the residents for their water and got to have a small 

talk with them. I also worked during lunch duty 

which was a little stressful because there are so many 

people who needed food. We have to also dump 

their lunch trays too. They also aren't big fans of 

vegetables but it always good to make sure it is on 

their tray.

Would you like to improve on 

your quality of life and what you 

do with your precious time? 

Make a difference in a Heroes 

life. Plan a night out, just 4 hours, 

once a week and join the team of 

volunteers proudly serving the 

Veterans who reside at the Missouri 

Veterans Home-St. Louis. 

We are now training and recruiting 

volunteers who would 

like to come in on a specific night 

from 4:00 p.m.– 8:00 p.m. or on 

week-ends to provide various activity 

programs and assist in various 

social events under the guidance 

of our Recreational Therapist

spot” for good company, good 

The Veterans are mostly nice but some of them 

are pretty grumpy and don’t want to be bothered. I 

spent about 2 hours there but I got a lot of work 

done. I felt really good volunteering for people who 

served our country.

The Missouri Veterans Home 

Day 2 of Volunteering 

Today is day 2 of volunteering at The Veterans 

Home. Today I went to the recreation department to 

make snowflakes with some of the residents. Last 

time I had to move around the home but today I got 

to sit down and actually talk to them. After a while 

we watched an oldies movie. 

One of the consistent volunteers I know is about 

84 or 85 years old and he does 8 hours mostly days. 

His name is Archie and he is probably more active 

than me. The residents and the employees love him. 

I probably I had more fun today than I did on day 

1 so volunteering here really worked out well and 

I’m looking forward to volunteering there again.

Happy New Year! January was 

a welcome slow down from all of 

the holiday festivities last month. 

We slipped back into our routine 

of bingo, book club, poker, and 

socials. On the 7 th we enjoyed 

watching the NCAA Championship 

Bowl game on the big 

screen. We went out to Red Lobster 

on the 15 th and had a seafood 

feast. We challenged our memories 

with trivia games, we enriched 

our souls with religious 

services, and we exercised our 

bodies, and enjoyed entertainment 

such as Joe Frank and the Community 

singers. We enjoyed ourselves 

even though we mostly 

stayed in and stayed warm! 

February started on a sweet note 

with an ice cream social, compliments 

of Southern Care Hospice. 

On the 8 th we had a soul food social 

with pig ears and black-eyed 

peas. On the 11 th we hosted our 

annual sweetheart luncheon. We 

feel so fortunate to be able to provide 

this occasion for our Special 

Care Unit residents and their 

families. On the 16 th we celebrated 

Fat Tuesday with Kings 

Cake and Mardi Gras beads. The 

rest of February was highlighted 

by nightly viewings of the winter 

Olympics. We so enjoyed watching 

the many talents of the athletes 

from all over the world. All 

of this in addition to the regularly 

scheduled events funded and 

staffed by the various A.L. Posts 

and VFW groups who take such 

good care of us. 

March brought the promise of 

spring and warm weather and 

spending time outdoors. We 

started with a fish fry outing on 

the 5 th followed by a casino outing 

on the 9 th and Wal-Mart on 

the 10 th . We had a visit from 

Grace Chapel on the 11 th which 

we enjoyed very much. On the 

15 th we enjoyed the much-

requested Chinese buffet. Everyone 

was Irish on the 17 th of 

course and we celebrated with 

snacks and beverages in the main 

dining room. All eyes were on 

the brackets for the remainder of 

the month as we all rooted for our 

favorite NCAA schools in the 

March Madness Tournament. We 

welcomed the Community singers 

on the 22 nd . On the 25 th we took a 

trip to the art museum and some 

of our more creative residents

the 27 th we celebrated the Spring 

Fling. We enjoyed a performance 

by the Italian Band, Easter egg 

hunts for the kids, treats for all 

ages, and a visit from the Easter 

Bunny! 

April and May promise to be 

exciting as well. We look forward 

to planting in our container 

gardens, going to Cardinals 

games, trap shooting, Fairmount 

Park, BBQ’s and the opening of 


our new juice bar to name a few 

things. We are also looking forward 

to seeing some of you at the 

annual volunteer banquet. Thank 

you for all that you do. Whether 

it is time, money, services, or material 

goods, we so appreciate 

your efforts which all add up to 

make each day a little brighter for 

our Heroes. Keep up your good 

work so that we can continue to 

do ours!


Our brother facility in St. James 

receives the pool table from St. Louis. 

The Missouri Veterans Home-St. James was grateful to receive 

the pool table from our St. Louis Veterans Home. As shown 

above the Heroes in St. James are very interested in playing a 

friendly game of billiards. 

The Pool Room was not being utilized at our St. Louis Home 

and our six other Veterans Homes were notified that the pool 

table was available. St. James responded and said they would 

love it. 

It is always a rewarding experience when we can make a difference 

in a Veterans life no matter where they are and this is 

one example of what good team work can result in when the effort 

is put forth.
