VETERANS HOME NEWS
CHAPEL CONSTRUCTION HAS BEGUN
If you visit the home anytime within the next few months, you’re likely
to hear the sounds and see signs of construction. We are proud to
announce that the construction has started on our new chapel. This
is being made possible by a grant from the Department of Veterans
Affairs.
During construction, visitors to the home should expect to find some
areas of the building blocked off from time to time, which is to be
expected. We hope this does not cause too much inconvenience. The
contractors are making every effort to accommodate our needs, while
continuing with their work according to schedule.
During construction, the Sunday morning services will continue to
be held in the dining room, where they have been for quite some time
due to over-crowding in the previous chapel. The mid-week worship
services and mass have moved into the Activity Room.
When the project is finished, our Veterans will have a 3,276 square
foot chapel with sound system and storage space. It will have wooden
ceiling beams, stained glass windows and an entrance way that includes
stained glass panels on each side.
Completion is anticipated sometime in the spring. More information
will be available as the completion date nears.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
• Must have documentation from a physician that he/she needs
FALL 2012
Traveling the Alaska Highway to raise money
for Veterans
John Reed, left, and Dave Hutson are shown here with Hutson’s 1951
M38 Willy Army jeep. The pair joined an 80-vehicle convoy during
July and August to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Alaska
Highway. Constructed during World War II to connect Alaska to the rest
of the continental United States, the Alaska Highway runs 4,100 rugged
miles through Canada and Alaska.
Reed and Hutson are both members of the SEMO Military Vehicles
Group, a chapter of the Military Vehicles Preservation Association,
a private organization dedicated to preserving antique U.S. military
vehicles of World War II, Korea and Vietnam eras.
Hutson and Reed began their journey July 28, met up with the rest of
the convoy in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, on Aug. 1 at the Alaska
Highway’s mile marker 0. The convoy left Dawson Creek on Aug. 4 for
Fairbanks, Alaska, where they turned around and return to Dawson
Creek on Aug. 30. They took this opportunity to raise money for
Veterans through per-mile pledges.
Hutson asked people to pledge money to any Veterans organization
of their choice, including the Veterans Home. At the end of the ride,
Hutson presented our home with donations totaling $2,428.00!
“It’s a great way to commemorate the road and keep the vehicles up and
moving and in the public eye,” Reed said. “It’s about the can-do attitude
and remembering all those who served.”
It was also a very fitting way to raise money to help improve the quality
of life for the Veterans living at our Veteran’s Home.
VETERANS HOME NEWS
Group Raises Money for New Bingo
Equipment
About 15 days every month, around 2:00 PM, you hear the familiar sound
of bingo numbers being called in the dining room. Bingo is by far the most
popular and well-attended activity at the home. Many of the Veterans
look forward to sharing the game with their fellow Veterans and the many
volunteers who come to assist.
For the last couple of years, the home’s bingo equipment started to wear
out and was messing up at least once during each game. When Randy
Eggimann heard that we needed new bingo equipment, he rallied his
friends and they went to work.
Randy had an antique tractor that he was restoring, so he decided to raffle
it off to help raise the needed money. That raffle took place over the past
two years during the SEMO District Fair. Many volunteers helped sell the
raffle tickets, most notably Rhonda Ray, who was at the fair almost every
night this past year. Kevin Kieffer was the lucky winner of the tractor.
In addition to the raffle, funds were also raised by the Falen Heroes Poker
Run. It started and ended at the Jackson Elks Lodge, with music and food
and a dance at the end. The local Girls Scouts also provided volunteer
assistance for this event.
Pictured above are some of the people who helped raise the money: left to
right are Veteran Bill Koch (who drew the ticket for the tractor raffle), Lori
Malvitz and Brad Reynolds of the Jackson Elks; Randy Eggimann; Teddy
Eggimann; Joe Brice, Jackson Elks; and Jodie Rouse, of the Girl Scouts. All
together, these events raised $6,000, which allowed the home to replace
both the console and the flash board. Now the Veterans can enjoy their
bingo without missing a number.

Thanksgiving Celebration
SAVE THE DATE
VETERANS HOME NEWS
Our annual Thanksgiving
Dinner brought in
around 400 family and
friends to enjoy a traditional
turkey dinner
with our Veterans.
A big thanks goes out
to everyone who helped
make this day possible.
All of the staff went
above and beyond their
normal duties, especially the dietary department who prepared all the
food. The housekeeping and maintenance departments did all the setup
and clean up, assisted
by great volunteers
from Teen Challenge.
The management team
and other staff members
pitched in to help
get everyone served in
record time.
A special thank-you
goes to Barb Yallaly and
the members of American
Legion Auxiliary
#63 in Cape who spent
hours decorating the tables and cutting pies. Pictured above, taking a
well-deserved rest at the end of the evening are (l-r) Grace Coy, Linda
Veterans Day Activities
Special guest speaker for our Veterans
Day Program was Mike Morgan, who
served with the Seabees in Desert
Storm. Mary Bauer performed a medley
of patriotic music, and vintage military
vehicles were available for viewing in the
parking lot. IBEW provided a barbecue
lunch for everyone, and some of their
children passed out cards and cookies
to the Veterans. Thanks to everyone
who sent cards, goodies, or stopped by
for a visit. It was a wonderful day!
Veterans Day 2012
What’s the Point?
On this Veterans Day, please remember:
It is the veteran, not the preacher,
who has given you freedom of religion.
It is the veteran, not the reporter,
who has given you freedom of the press.
It is the veteran, not the poet,
who has given you freedom of speech.
It is the veteran, not the liberal protesters,
who has given you freedom to assemble.
It is the veteran, not the lawyer,
who has given you the right to a fair trial.
It is the veteran, not the politician,
who has given you the right to vote.
It is the veteran, who salutes the Flag,
who serves under the Flag.
Let us honor them all on this day.
And that’s the Point.
FALL 2012
VETERANS HOME NEWS
Everywhere you looked around the home this fall, there was
something growing or blooming. Several of our Veterans have
taken an interest in gardening this year, and their hard work is
evident. Top left is Bill Billmeyer with his son Craig, in front of
the rose garden they planted near C wing. Top right is Normandy
Myers with one of the many flower arrangements she has assembled
to brighten up the inside of the building. The flowers are donated
from Schnuck’s. Middle left are the Billmeyers, admiring the
butterfly garden in which they have planted numerous new
flowers. Above is Jim Slinkard, with his turnip patch. Hopefully,
we will all be enjoying some fresh turnips very soon. Bottom left
is Jim Drickey with some of his moon flowers. You have to catch
these flowers early in the morning, as they normally bloom at night
and close up during the day. One other Veteran, Del Witt and his
daughter also plant the boxes by our front door in the spring with
beautiful red, white & blue flowers. A photo was not available.

WWII Veterans Visit
Washington DC
Three of the home’s residents joined several other WWII Veterans on
the most recent Honor Tour, traveling to Washington DC. Shown
here in front of the White House are, left to right, Bill Billmeyer, Rich
Fehr, and Bernard Tenkhoff.
The Honor Tour offers a wonderful opportunity for Veterans to make a
trip of a lifetime. Tour organizer, Rob Callahan, has worked tirelessly
to raise the funds and organize several trips over the past years, in an
attempt to take as many of the WWII Veterans as possible to see the
monument honoring their service to our country.
33rd Armored Division Reunion
Veteran resident Carl Allgier, center, visits with some of his old Army
Buddies and their wives, during a reunion of the 33rd Armored
Division, HQ & HQ Co, which was stationed at Coleman Kaserne in
Germany around 1958-60. This group first had a reunion in 1983 on
their 25th Anniversary and have only missed one year since.
want to thank you for celebrating
his memory as he meant so much
to so many people.
We thank you for the beautiful
We want to thank everyone
at the Veterans Home for the
wonderful care and attention
that each of you gave my father,
Robert Whittenburg. He always
told us how good he was being
treated and how happy he was to
be there. Because of the excellent
care he was receiving, we never felt
uncomfortable when leaving.
Dad enjoyed playing bingo and
winning money. Last Fall’s fishing
outing was his favorite activity
while at the home and he was absolutely
thrilled to catch the biggest
fish.
A very special thanks to the B
Wing nursing staff for the loving
care you gave Dad. He appreciated
all of you so much. May God bless
each one of you.
The peace lily is lovely. Thank you.
Our family wishes to thank you for
the way you took care of Ken. He
never complained about anything
always told us how much he felt
loved. We are so blessed to have a
place for our Veterans to stay during
their older years.
FALL 2012
We are proud of our outstanding team of highly dedicated and skilled employees in all departments who honor our Veterans
through superior nursing home care. Here are some recent comments from families and friends:
Thank you for the lily plant, it is
very pretty. I appreciated the care
and concern that was exhibited by
the staff when Charles was admitted
to the home. Charles meant a
great deal to our family and he is
and will be missed forever.
Thank you,
Alene McGee
FALL 2012
From Veterans Day through the end of the year is a very busy
time at the Veterans Home. The Activities Department has lots of
special events planned and the home is decorated inside and out for
Christmas.
Even with all the additional activities and decorations, many of our
residents naturally miss being at home with family and friends. That
is why the staff and volunteers do all they can to make this a special
time of the year.
One way you can help is by participating in the “Adopt a Vet” program.
With your donation of at least $30 you can help provide Christmas
for one Veteran. These donations make it possible for Santa to give
each Veteran one special gift. It also helps cover the expenses of
parties and decorations, to help cheer the Veterans and brighten the
atmosphere.
Your donation will go a long way toward helping us spread the joy of
the Christmas season while reminding the Veterans that their service
to our country has not been forgotten.
1. Members of
the VFW Post
have been raising
money and
supporting the
Veterans Home
since it first
opened. If you
look around the
home you will
see many items
that were made
possible by this
group. They are donating an amazing total of $12,000 during 2012 to support the
Veterans Benevolent Fund and the Perpetual Trust. 2. Bootheel Harley Davidson
held a special event during the summer to benefit Veterans. Here Rob Hocking,
one of the dealership’s owners, presents a check for $500 to Debbie Monroe which
represents one-half of the proceeds raised at the event. 3. Perryville Veterans Raymond
Fluegel and Roy Layton accept a check for $300 on behalf of the Foundation
from Chuck Mudge, representing the Perryville Elks. In addition to supporting the
Veterans financially, this group also bring their grills and smokers to cook for our
annual picnic in the spring. Thanks you to all the Elks for their continued support
of our Veterans.
4. Members of VFW Auxiliary 4282 from Perryville recently visited the home to
sponsor a bingo. They also took this opportunity to present a check to the home
for $500 to help provide Christmas for the Veterans. Here some of the members are
pictured with Perryville Veterans Roy Layton and Raymond Fluegel. 5. Members
of the Christian Motorcycle Association stopped by to visit with Veterans and bring
supplies. Here they are visiting with a fellow motorcycle enthusiast, Veteran Bud
Spurlock.
