Veterans enjoy picnic with family
& friends
For the third year, our Veterans were able to enjoy an old-fashioned picnic
with their families. This would not be possible without the help of the 1140th
Engineer Battalion of the Army National Guard. We are also fortunate to
have the assistance of the Perryville Elks, who grilled the meat for lunch, as
well as all the wonderful volunteers and staff. See more picnic photos on Page
Independence Day
The home’s 4th of July celebration has
grown every year. Most everyone agreed
that it rivaled any public display they had
seen. This is made possible by individual
donations, as well as a special fund-raising
event held at the Gordonville Grill. Special
thanks to the Zeilenga family and friends
who served as our pyrotechnic engineers.
15th Annual Tournament
The 15th Annual Veterans Home Golf Tournament was held at Bent Creek Golf
Course on June 3rd. Thirty teams enjoyed a great afternoon of golf, great food,
and showed their support for our Veterans. The event raised over $30,000!
VETERANS HOME NEWS
A Message from the Administrator
It is hard to believe that 2011 is
half over! It has been a very busy
few months, and I would like to
take this opportunity to catch
you up on a few of the events
and concerns that our Home has
experienced.
The summer started with our
15th Annual Golf Tournament
sponsored by the Missouri
Viviane Rains
Veterans Home Foundation. It
was quite hot this year for the
event, but that did not seem
to stop any of the golfers from
enthusiastically supporting our
Veterans! This event continues
to be a mainstay to raise funds
for the Missouri Veterans Home Foundation which continues to provide
the “extra’s” to enhance the lives of our Veterans. The Golf Committee did
an excellent job preparing for this event. A heartfelt thank you goes out
to all of the sponsors, golfers, and volunteers for generously supporting
this event.
A couple of days later we held our 3rd Annual Veteran/Family Picnic.
We were blessed with several in attendance again this year. Seeing our
Veterans enjoy the outdoors with their spouses, children, grandchildren
and close friends was a joyous occasion. It was a pleasure to see more
children present this year enjoying the events planned just for them. We
hope to continue to expand and see our annual picnic continue to grow!
A big thank you is sent to those staff and volunteers who worked so hard
to make this picnic a success. We sincerely appreciate the Missouri
Veterans Home Foundation for raising the funds needed to provide this
picnic and to the members of the Perryville Elks who cooked over 600
pork steaks and hot dogs. A special thank you also goes to the 1140th
Engineer Battalion of the Army National Guard for assisting us again this
year. We couldn’t do this without them!
July brought forward a wonderful fireworks display enjoyed by many. This
display, while intended for our Veterans, is becoming quite well known
in the community. It is exciting to know that so many in our community
join us in celebrating this Nation’s Day of Independence. Next year, be
sure and check out Cape County Park North, just across Hwy. 61 from the
home. I think you will be amazed at the number of people who come out
to enjoy our display! This display is funded by individual donations and
a special fund-raiser held at the Gordonville Grill. It is presented by the
family our own Cassie Zeilenga who directs our Recreation Department.
A sincere thank you to all of them!
Administrator
(Continued from P. 2)
It is no secret that the future of our Home, along with the other six
Missouri Veterans Homes across the great State of Missouri, is a concern.
Changes regarding funding of our program must be made soon to ensure
that our Homes are able to continue serving our Veterans in future years.
Peter Kinder, Lt. Governor recently visited our facility during a tour of
the Missouri Veterans Homes. During his visit, he spoke with several of
the Veterans, their family members, staff and members of our Foundation
Board. He stated several times that he would do anything within his
authority to ensure that funding is established and that our Veterans will
continue to be served.
It is an honor to work with our wonderful staff members in serving our
Veterans. I would like to encourage all of you to feel free to contact me if
you have any questions related to our Home, its operations, our Mission
or future.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are the admission requirements?
To be eligible for admission, a Veteran must meet ALL of the following
criteria:
• Active military duty with discharge status other than
dishonorable.
• Resident of the State of Missouri for 180 days sometime in their
lifetime.
• Must have documentation from a physician that he/she needs
skilled nursing home care.
• Health condition must be such that the home has resources to
provide adequate care.
What is “skilled nursing home care”?
According to the Veterans Administration, it is the care given to convalescents
or other persons who require nursing home care, as prescribed
by or performed under the general direction of a physician. A skilled
facility provides nursing, rehabilitative, dietetic, pharmaceutical, laboratory,
radiological, social, and spiritual services to the patient.
What is your Special Care Unit?
It is a 50-bed unit designed and staffed to meet the needs of individuals
with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, or those who could
benefit from living in a secure unit. It has its own dining room, activity
area and enclosed courtyard.
How can I get an application?
Applications are available at any Missouri Veterans Home or Veterans
Service Office. Call Kim Snell, Admissions Coordinator for the Cape
Girardeau Home at 573-290-5870 ext. 5484 if you have questions or
to have an application mailed to you. Applications and other valuable
SUMMER 2011
Jean Sherrill is new Director of
Nursing Services
Jean Sherrill was born in Festus,
Missouri. Jean grew up in Hillsboro
and DeSoto Missouri and was one
of eight children. After graduating
high school, Jean married Mark
Sherrill of Farmington, Missouri.
They raised two sons, Darren
and Brian, and worked together
as owner-operators of several
businesses, to include video rental
stores and self-serve car washes
before she decided to continue her
Jean Sherrill, RN education by attending Stanford
Brown College in St. Louis, graduating in 1997 with an associated of science
degree in nursing.
After working in a few hospitals, Jean took a position in a long-term care
center in Desloge, Missouri. It was during this time that Jean found her
home in geriatric nursing and she never looked back. Jean has been a charge
nurse, nurse manager, assistant director of nursing, staff development
coordinator, and the director of nursing, while working at several different
homes in Missouri and Arizona.
Impressed by older adults who seem to thrive despite all their hardships,
past and present, and Veterans who have “sacrificed so much for our
freedoms” - Jean feels it’s an honor to serve them, and she has done just
that for the last eight years at the Cape Girardeau Veterans Home.
Jean presently lives in Jackson, Missouri with her husband and two sons.
Our Dedicated Staff & Volunteers
Employees retire after many years of service
Maria Hanschen, RN, recently celebrated her
retirement after serving as Director of Nursing
Services for 21 years. She was the first and only DON
since the Cape Girardeau home opened its doors in
1990. The superior quality of nursing care provided in
the home is reflective of the many years of dedication
and love she has devoted to our Veterans. Veterans
and staff wish her well in her future endeavors.
Vivian Barks has
served in many
capacities in the
home for the past 20
years, most recently
serving as the
cosmetologist. We
are so fortunate that
she decided to become a volunteer after
retirement -- which only lasted about
a week. That is when she was hired
back on a part-time basis to continue
cutting and curling hair. Best wishes to
you -- and welcome back!
Bertha Foster,
CNA, has
been providing
direct care for
our Veterans
for the past 10
years. Many were on hand
for her big send-off, joined by
family, friends, and staff who
all wish her well during her
retirement. Her infectious
smile and positive attitude
will be greatly missed!
Veterans Commission Employee of the Month
Becky Hoover, Certified Nursing Assistant for the Missouri Veterans
Home – Cape Girardeau, was selected as the July 2011 Missouri Veterans
Commission Employee of the Month.
Becky, who started at MVH-Cape Girardeau
fresh out of high school 16 years ago, is being
recognized for her hard work, dedication and
compassion to ensure the care Veterans receive
is as close to the care they would receive at home
from their families. As a CNA on the Special Care
Unit, Becky is known for her gentle and quiet
voice, putting the Veterans at ease, enabling her
to encourage the most challenging residents to take a bath or get up for
an activity when no one else has been successful.
A recent example of Becky’s dedication and compassion was during the
recent passing of one of the Veterans. During the end of life, the family
had been sitting vigil by his side, however due to circumstances had to
leave before his passing. Holding to the facility’s belief that no Veterans
should pass alone, Becky stayed with the Veteran, holding his hand and
calmly reassuring the Veteran during his passing.
Becky will be honored at a ceremony on August 30, 2011 at 2 pm.
Volunteers Honored
L-R: Michael Lindner, Carla Lindner, Jerome Lindner, and
Margaret Lindner.
Planting the Seeds of Kindness was the theme
for the annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet,
held at the Cape Elks Lodge in April. This is a
wonderful opportunity to thank all of the volunteers
who devote so much time and effort to helping in
all areas of the Veterans Home. This year we were
proud to honor some very deserving individuals
for their outstanding service.
It is not often that we are able to honor an entire
family, but the Lindner family are exceptional. They
began volunteering when Jerome and Margaret
Lindner’s father was a resident, and continue on as
a fixture, especially during bingo.
Also honored for their outstanding dedication as
volunteers were Dee Mantos, Melvin Eggimann,
Bob Henry, Doyle Schiwitz, and Marie Brantley.
(Photos of Doyle and Marie were not available for
the printing of this newsletter, but will be published
at a future date.)
Early morning rain
may have reduced
the participation
for the Poker
Run, held in early
May, but it did not
dampen the enthusiasm.
When the
sun popped out,
several of the Veterans
were able to
get out and see the
motorcycles, cars
and tractors on display
in the parking lot. Pictured here are some of the Veterans judging the
bike show. In spite of the weather, the event raised $1,144.50.
