NOTE: On our journey towards Culture Change and Veteran Centered Care, we at Missouri Veterans
Home -Warrensburg (MVH-W) refer to our “residents” as Veterans or Neighbors.

A special “tea party” was held for the women Veterans living at the Home. The tea party was hosted by the
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 131 and included cookies, finger sandwiches, and a rose for each Veteran.
While finishing touches
are being made to our expansion
projects, I wanted to share with
you that status of our construction.
The two new additions to our
Home include the sunroom
addition adjacent to the existing
Cafeteria and the Multipurpose
Room/Chapel at the intersection
of the Neighborhoods Highland
Park and Whispering Hills.
The sunroom is expected to be
completed by the end of the year while the multipurpose
room was completed in October. The sunroom addition
will ensure that all our Veterans can dine comfortably
in what will be expanded dining areas and they will be
able to enjoy the sun year around. The Multipurpose
Room/Chapel has replaced the original Chapel that we
have outgrown. This new room is comparable in size to
our existing cafeteria and accommodates all our Veterans
and their loved ones who wish to attend church services,
special events, and celebrations. It will also serve as a
much needed space for the Home’s many large receptions,
banquets, and meetings. This new room is equipped with
state of the art audio visual features including wireless
headsets to amplify the hearing of those in the audience.
ROXIE, THE PUP ON PAROLE...
• Roxie is one of the newest additions to our Veteran Centered Care.
• Roxie was adopted by MVH-W from a program called, “Puppies on Parole.”
Roxie was trained at a correctional facility prior to coming here on August
9, 2011.
• She is a medium sized, fun loving, mixed breed dog that we think will
make an excellent companion for our Home.
• Roxie went to Doggie Boot Camp (aka, Post Oak K-9 Training Center) and
passed with flying colors!
• You are invited to keep up with all the latest “Roxie News” by becoming
a Fan of Roxie’s Facebook page. Click on the following link, log in, and
The Chaplain’s office is also located in this area. A final
benefit of this multipurpose room is that it may be used
for a temporary sheltering in place (in an emergency) if
one, or a portion of one, unit were damaged--this would
of course provide much less disruption to the care and
services of our Veterans and ensure continuity of Home
operations. The first event held in the multipurpose room
was registration for the Run for Freedom.
At the request multiple families have made of
me, the former chapel is being converted into a private
family room that may be reserved so families can enjoy
one another’s company in a private, home-like setting.
This room will be complete with a home-style dining
room table and chairs, a couch, recliners and a large flat
panel television. When not reserved this room will be
available on a first-come first-served basis by Veterans
and/or their families.
As always, everything we do at MVH-W places
our Veterans first. It is my hope that our Veterans and
their families will enjoy these new spaces in our Home
and will let me know in what other ways we can strive to
realize our Mission to “Honor and Serve”. If you would
like a guided tour of any of these new spaces, please feel
free to ask me or a member of our leadership team, and
we’ll be happy to show our beautiful new additions to
you.
Welcome to our new Neighbors . . .
October 1 at the Home in
Warrensburg. Thanks to sponsors,
entries, a raffle and donations,
$8,735 was raised to directly
benefit the 200 Veterans living at
the Home through quality of life
services and programs.
Almost 300 people
attended the event which included
133 paid entries as well as
approximately 25 of the Home’s
Veterans who participated (free
of charge) in the Poker Walk
using wheelchairs “motored” by
volunteers. Friends and family
members accompanied entries
in the Poker Walk at no charge.
Missouri State Senator David
for runners and walkers.
Refreshments and drawings for
prizes were held at the finish
line. Thank you to the businesses
suppling door prizes.
Chaplain Ron Adair
Greetings! This has
been an exciting five months; it
seems such a short time ago that
I started as Chaplain here. I’ve
been treated exceptionally well
by Staff; as well as by Neighbors.
It has been wonderful
just being a “spoke in the large
wheel” of treatment and care of our Veteran Heroes. I
am quite proud of the quality of care provided to these
deserving Ladies and Gentleman. MVH projects a
Family atmosphere that seems to elicit a very positive
reaction from our Neighbors.
We are very proud to be in our Multipurpose
wonderful to have a Chapel to worship in and we will
try to fill it up soon. We were using the Game Room
since I came here in May and went from four or five
people to fifteen to twenty on a regular basis. We do
not concentrate on any one church doctrine but try to
be as universal as possible that all may feel welcome in
our services.
I am thrilled to now have my own office that
is located in the new Multipurpose Room/Chapel and
I encourage you to come by and check it out. I have
VETERAN’S SPOTLIGHT
Basil Gibson
Mr. Basil
Gibson came to
Missouri Veterans
Home-Warrensburg
on March 10,
2010. Born in
Hardin, Missouri on
November 24, 1918
to Basil Sr. and Lula
Wilton, Basil was
the middle child of
three. Farming was
the family business.
After his graduation
from High School in Hardin, Mo, he continued his
education at the Missouri Aviation Institution in
Kansas City, Missouri. During his adult years he
honored his family tradition by farming during the
prime seasons and worked in the winter months
doing sheet metal welding and Machinist work in
Wellington, MO at Kenworth Company.
Basil married Georgia, his beautiful wife
on February 6, 1944; together they produced three
wonderful children, two girls and one boy. An
Basil Gibson is one of many
Neighbors that uses Skype to visit
online. He is pictured on the right with
his daughter Pam Williams visiting with
his son-in-law
Andy Williams.
Skype is
the newest online
technology VAL purchased and installed
in the Library for Veterans to visit face
to face with their loved ones. Veterans
just need to make an appointment with
their Social Worker who will assist in
getting their loved ones online. It is free
to use.
Basil served his country in the Army Air
Force from September 21, 1942 until his honorable
discharge on November 6, 1945. He was stationed
at Drew Field in Florida after his enlistment at
Leavenworth, KS. Upon Basil’s discharge with the
rank of Sergeant, he had earned the Good Conduct
Medal for his service in WWII and the American
Theatre Ribbon.
Basil retired
at the age of 80
and was an active
member of the
American Legion,
he also enjoys
reading, drinking
an occasional beer,
professional dedication to the field of Long Term Care.
She is Chairman of the NAHCA Leadership Team at
(MVH~W) and serves as Vice-Chairman of NAHCA’s
National Steering Commission.
“Donna tirelessly and joyfully promotes the
ongoing journey toward unparalleled compassion in
long term care,” said Eric Endsley, Missouri Veterans
Home~Warrensburg Administrator. “It’s a rare privilege
to work with someone of her caliber, and I know she
will have an immediate, positive, lasting impact on all
aspects of the important work being conducted by the
Advancing Excellence Campaign.”
Adair said she was “blessed to receive such an amazing
opportunity,” and plans to use her skills and experience
to serve the nation’s senior population and represent all
Certified Nursing Assistants in the critical movement to
improve standards of care in nursing homes across the
nation.
Adair’s influential role will focus on lending a
comprehensive “frontline caregiver perspective” to the
campaign’s overall national objectives.
Parker McNeel
and employees of
Parker’s Supermarket
visit daily with
local Veterans who are
among the “Parker’s
Coffee Club” who
congregrate for morning
coffee at the store.
From morning coffee,
a picture tribute started
that continues to grow!
It all started when
Parker purchased a
picture of a WWII plane and had it signed by the “Coffee Club” and displayed it on the wall along with the plaque
“What a Difference A Day Makes.” Since that time, the entire wall has been dedicated to pictures of local combat
Veterans and expanded to other walls to include any military service Veterans who have served and are serving.
Parker’s Supermarket held a fundraiser at the store and provided a BBQ lunch for a donation to support
Veteran Programs at MVH-W. Some Veterans from the Home attended and were provided a lunch at no charge.
A total of $1,063 was raised on a “rainy” Saturday. Pictured above is part of the group attending when the check
was presented: (back row) Parker’s Asst. Mgr. Calvin Hunt, Howard Chappell, Ed Wooodrel, Charlie Teeter,
Bryan Lee, Joe Sloan, Parker’s Mgr. Chris Case, Marvin Neal, and Bill Hartford. Seated: Richard Jung
and Birl Ewing (Veteran Home Veterans), Bob Compton.
Thank You Parker and staff for your continued support of our Veterans, as well as the “Coffee
Club”, who all support the Home and many volunteer regularly.
