Hecate Lowl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

A number of areas have been identified with in the Hecate Lowl<strong>and</strong>s as having potential<br />

for aquaculture. Refer to table 1C for an overview of the operation type <strong>and</strong> site<br />

potential. Hecate Lowl<strong>and</strong>s has highest <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> area rating for aquaculture sites.<br />

Communities have identified an interest in aquaculture development for the following<br />

species:<br />

• fin fish in both indigenous <strong>and</strong> non indigenous stock<br />

• goeduck<br />

• mussels<br />

• clams<br />

• sea urchin<br />

• seaweed<br />

• partnerships with existing industry<br />

The following species are presently being enhanced in the Hecate Lowl<strong>and</strong>s.<br />

• chum<br />

• pink<br />

• coho<br />

• chinook<br />

• sockeye<br />

There are several clam beds that are seeded for commercial use.<br />

<strong>Opportunities</strong>: Aquaculture Outer Coast<br />

• higher employment levels in communities<br />

• partnerships <strong>and</strong> expertise can be attracted to communities<br />

• fish close to source<br />

• new ventures will include local residents<br />

• new ventures by local residents will control resource<br />

• investment in plan area<br />

• goods <strong>and</strong> services from plan area residents <strong>and</strong> businesses<br />

• product development may be a potential<br />

<strong>Barriers</strong>: Aquaculture- Outer Coast<br />

• concern over health of natural resource<br />

• want accurate picture of natural resource <strong>and</strong> inventory before proceeding<br />

• want to know impacts<br />

• fear of escapements of Atlantic’s<br />

• fear of spread of disease<br />

• new science over short period of time<br />

• division in attitude regarding wild vs. bred<br />

• some communities want moratorium to continue<br />
