A Rose for Mother
Another Mother's Day is here,
Bringing joy and pleasures new.
On this special day, Mother dear,
I want to remember you.
I cannot give you costly gifts,
And I've told you this before,
No matter what I give you,

Gathered in the early morn,

In case you were wondering and somebody
brings this subject up in conversation, surveys
indicate that Mother's Day is Canada's
second largest holiday for gift giving. It's
not surprising since moms play a very
important role in our lives, handling a
plethora of roles and duties. In addition to
being the second-largest holiday for giftgiving,
it's also the leading day of the year
for long distance phone calls, the busiest
day for restaurant dining, and the third
largest greeting day holiday.
In as far as gift-giving is concerned, cards
represent 79% of purchases, flowers/plants,
52%, dinner/brunch, 23%, gardening items,
22%, apparel, 19%, jewelry, 17% and home
décor, 11%. Family members will be interested
to learn that approximately 30% procrastinate,
waiting one week or less before
Mother's Day to purchase their cards.
The origin of Mother's Day is attributed to
Julia Ward Howe, in 1872, as a dedication
to peace. In 1907, Ana Jarvis started a campaign
to establish a national Mother's Day.
She convinced her mother's church in
Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's
Day on the second anniversary of her mother's
death, the 2 nd Sunday of May. By the
next year Mother's Day was also celebrated
in Philadelphia. President Woodrow Wilson
proclaimed it a national holiday in 1914, to
be held each year on the second Sunday of
May.
Just for the fun of it, here are the "Top Ten
(and more) Momisms" uttered by all
moms as some time. How many have you
uttered personally at some point, or heard
your Mom say to you?
-Why? Because I said so, that's why!
-I'm gong to give you until the count of

-It's all fun and games until someone gets

like that
-I'm not running a taxi service
-If everyone jumped off a cliff, would you
do it too?

-I'm not talking just to hear my own voice
-I hope someday when you have kids
they're just like you, then you'll know
-Bob, Sue, Joe, Fido…whatever your
name is…
In as far as gifts are concerned, here are
some inexpensive suggestions:
-Write a personal poem (or song!) expressing
your feelings
-Buy an inexpensive frame for a "special"
photograph
- Make a list of "I promise to…" consisting
of daily chores i.e. dish drying, grass cutting,
etc.

Fund raiser…in support of the
suffering of Albania
The Philoptochos Society of the Greek
Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto has
pledged to support His Beatitude
Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana and all
Alabania and SAE, with the establishment
of a Health Care Center in Georgousates,
Southern Albania.
This new state-of-the-art Medical Center
will offer both primary and specialized care,
and to this end, the Philoptochos Chapters
of Montreal and vicinity has organized a
Fund Raising Dinner to take place on
Sunday, May 26, 6:00 p.m. at the Palace
Reception Hall, 1717 boul. Le Corbusier,
Chomedey. Tickets are $50 per person and

Three stream garbage – a suggestion
– and an incentive
It occurred to me while separating all my
garbage (I'm so busy these days!) in three

in the project is the creation of compost,
