The CHOMEDEY News • May 4, 2002 • PAGE 18 THE CHOMEDEY news COMPUTER ZONE Review: Olympus D-380 Review Two Megapixels for Under $200 US Until the newest consumer camera from Olympus America, digital camera shoppers had to pay about $125 to $150 per megapixel of resolution. But the Olympus D-380 is the first two-megapixel camera we've seen that breaks the $200 barrier -- and it's not only a good price proposition at $199, but a good value one, too. While the trappings of higher-priced models -- features like optical zoom, a TV-out port for big-screen image viewing, or preprogrammed settings for various shooting environments -- are absent, the D-380 isn't a digital camera version of the Yugo. It can snap pictures as large as 1,600 by 1,208 pixels, or capture 15-second QuickTime movies (albeit silent ones). The camera has a fixed-focus Olympus 4.5mm F/4 lens (equivalent to a 35mm lens in a 35mm film camera) with five elements in five groups. In normal mode, the lens's range is two feet to infinity; flipping a switch below the lens activates macro or close-up mode for shots from about 10 inches to two feet. The Olympus also shoots up to 15-second, 320 by 240-pixel or 60-second, 160 by 120-pixel movies in QuickTime MOV format. Though there's no optical zoom, you're not strictly limited to walk-backward-and-forward scene framing; the D-380's 5X digital zoom works like a series of telephoto lenses. Rather than smoothly moving between focal points, the zoom jumps from point to point as if you were changing lenses with different focal lengths. Only the lowest resolution offers the full 1- 5X enlargement range, however; the zoom range for the upper three resolutions is 1- 2.5X. Moreover, photos tend to get grainy at the higher enlargement levels. You can compose your shots on the 1.6inch, 60,000-pixel color LCD monitor or in the optical viewfinder; the former works adequately even in bright sunlight, and is the only way to see the enlarged image if framing a shot using the digital zoom. If you can't see what you want on the monitor, you can always switch to the viewfinder. At 6.7 ounces and 4.9 by 2.6 by 1.6 inches, the Olympus is heftier than some of the sleek, new compacts from Canon and Nikon, but it still fits comfortably in a jacket pocket -- or pants pocket, if you're modeling "relaxed fit" khakis. The D-380's controls are arranged cleanly and simply and there are few of them, which should reduce anxiety in neophyte digital shutterbugs. The basic premise sees you assume the role of Captain Lewis Stone, an American Flight Officer who has the poor fortune to get shot down by the Germans as he flies over Stalag Luft III, a prisoner of war camp. Once he has been imprisoned, the only tool he has to help him escape is his own ingenuity. The game is a 3rd person affair which sees Stone and his co-pilot sneaking around the prison, encountering a wide variety of other prisoners who may be able to help him in his bid to get out - although this will usually come at a price. Getting what you need in order to procure the desired information from a prisoner means there are plenty of "subquests" along the way. You'll find you need help because the prison camp is patrolled by a fearsome array of German guards, lieutenants and the evil Kommandant himself. The game will see you planning and executing an escape with your co-pilot until, disastrously, you are both spotted by the Kommandant, and as an example to the rest of the prisoners, your co-pilot is heartlessly executed. Your character is subsequently moved to another, more secure POW camp but far from resting on his laurels and waiting for the war to end, Stone starts to sneak around his new home when he stumbles across a new German Weapon being developed. The only place that the Germans know the Allies won't bomb is a POW camp, so it seems the perfect cover - and it is down to you to get out and tell the world. In order to find out more though, you actually need to escape from the camp and be recaptured, so that you can be moved around the four camps which hold information you need to bring about the downfall of the evil German masterplan. You'll have to do this more than once, apparently, so you'll be returning to the same prisons on more than one occasion only to find that there are seasonal differences - lakes iced over, for example, and different routines for the guards. Using the powerful 3D Atlas engine, Prisoner of War will provide a real visual feast for the player, using graphics and audio features to vividly recreate the unique nerve-wracking atmosphere of the camps during day and night. Each prison camp will be modelled in incredible and it seems as though almost everything in the game world will be interactive, providing an incredible level of freedom and involvement to use anything you see to try and help you make good your escape. The other prisoners are al specialists in the key skills needed to escape from Prisoner of War Camps, and each person you meet will have different abilities that may or may not be of use to you. Athleticism, stealth, espionage, charm, linguistics - all these skills will most likely show themselves as being vital to your chances of getting out at one point or another. Exactly what kind of skills you should be looking for in your co-prisoners is going to be down to the player, because there will always be more than one way to escape the prisons - with the player free to go for whichever method they fancy. It might be something as old-fashioned and conservative as digging a tunnel, but it might be that something more exciting is the order of the day - escaping using home-made explosives, perhaps, or flying out of the camp during an airraid using an improvised glider. The player will be under observation at all times though, and escaping the attention of the guards will not be an easy task - and with many of the escape bids being time-sensitive, a few days in solitary for being caught disobeying the prison camp rules could spell disaster. The game is promising some revolutionary steps in the field of artificial intelligence, with guards and other enemy characters having a great amount of freedom and not being tightly scripted, as is the norm in games of this ilk. This should mean that the guards have more freedom to observe the environment around them and react to what they see, rather than observing a strictly regimented pattern from which they never deviate. In theory, this should make sneaking past them much more difficult as it requires more talent than simply memorising their preset routines and taking advantage of the moments when they aren't concentrating.
