Beaglers Adopt Dachshund Field Trial Rule Changes
While Dachshund field trialers owe a great debt to the Beagling community, it is nice to know that
our hound brethren occasionally like the ideas that we generate. At the BCA’s request, the AKC
Board approved a revision of the Beagle Field Trial Rules that eliminates the ban on officers serving
as judges for club trials – mimicking the change that DCA requested to the Field Trial Rules and
Standard Procedure for Dachshunds earlier in the year. The Beaglers had also adopted the
change in the handling of the entry forms as well.
Reminder: Increase in AKC Recording Fees for Earthdog
For all those planning spring and summer earthdog events …
At its November meeting, the AKC Board of Directors approved raising the recording fee for
Herding, Earthdog, and Lure Coursing from $3.00 to $3.50. These increases go into effect on
March 1, 2011.
Please take this change into account when budgeting your earthdog expenses and, of course, when
sending in your results to AKC post-test. Otherwise, you will surely be hearing from AKC very soon
afterwards!
AKC Committee Funding
“The Mean Seeds Project”
The AKC Field Trial and Hunting Test Delegate Committee is funding a 10state
research project through the AKC Humane Fund that will study grass
awn disease.
An awn is a hair or bristle-like appendage attached to a seed pod. [Those
pictured to the right are but one example.] Grass awn disease results when
an awn enters the soft tissue of an animal and, because of its barbs, moves
continuously forward leaving a tract of infection behind it. The most
common site of grass awn entry is the ear canal followed by inter-digital
webs, eye, nose and the lumbar area. Grass awn migration is not always
recognized as a health issue until well after a dog becomes ill because the
penetration by the awn itself may not be noted.
Although only a small portion of native and cultivated grasses in North America have awns, most
trackers have had to remove awns at one time or other from their dogs. Apparently the sporting
dog community has suffered several tragedies in recent years due to grass awn disease, and those
incidents spurred the current research endeavor.
The awns of weeds like foxtail or cheatgrass are the most cited culprits but increasingly cultivated
plants like rye have been implicated in grass awn disease. Some of these grasses are deliberately
seeded on Conservation Reserve Program CRP lands to control soil erosion or restore natural
ecosystems. By focusing on a 10-state area in the midwest were many farmers are enrolled in the
CRP system, the committee hopes to characterize the mixture of seeds utilized and press for a
change to alternative awn-less grasses should the study find that the grass mixtures in service are
dangerous to dogs.
To learn more about the AKC research project, go to www.akc.org/pdf/events/performance/
-- New Test Allows All Dogs the Chance to Experience the Fun and Excitement of Lure Coursing --
New York, NY - The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) is pleased to announce the launch of a new
titling event - the Coursing Ability Test - on February 24, 2011 in Calhoun, GA. Open to all dogs,
the Coursing Ability Test is an introductory event fashioned after the sport of lure coursing and
meant to be a fun, healthy activity for dogs and their owners. Coursing Ability Tests may be held
by all licensed lure coursing clubs.
Eligible dogs must be at least 12 months of age and individually registered/listed with the AKC
(registered purebred, Foundation Stock Service (FSS), Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) or AKC
Canine Partner). In order to pass the test, a dog running alone must pursue a lure, completing the
course with enthusiasm and without interruption within a given time.
"The Coursing Ability Test can provide a wonderful community outreach opportunity, an enjoyable
experience for dogs and owners and a way to expose a wider audience to the sport, " said AVP
Performance Events Doug Ljungren. "Most dogs will chase a lure and have fun in the process."
Dogs that pass the Coursing Ability Test three times will earn a Coursing Ability (CA) title. Ten
passes and a dog earns a Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) title and 25 passes results in a Coursing
Ability Excellent (CAX) title.
Upcoming events include:
* Bluegrass Coursing Club, February 24-25, Calhoun, GA
* Greyhound Association of North Georgia, February 26-27, Calhoun, GA
* Alamo Area Whippet Club, March 5-6, Hutto, TX
* Northwest Arkansas Kennel Club, March 19-20, Rogers, AR
* Mid-Atlantic Hound Association of Central North Carolina, May 21-22, Rocky Mount, NC
These Coursing Ability Tests are being held in conjunction with the Club's normal Lure Coursing
trial. Coursing Ability Tests may be held with a trial or as stand-alone events.
A summary description of the test, the regulations governing the event and a Coursing Ability Test
application form, as well as a list of upcoming events can be found on the AKC website at
www.akc.org/events/performance. Click on "Coursing Ability Test" on the left side of the
2010 Dachshund Field Trial Statistics
There were 70 AKC member or licensed Dachshund field trials held by DCA and 24 specialty clubs
in 2010.
The largest event of the year was the Dachshund Club of Metropolitan Atlanta’s March 27th trial
with 130 regular stake entries including 51 field champions. The first day of Atlanta’s three-trial
weekend also garnered an impressive entry of 128. The combined weekend entry count was 356,
a testament to both springtime and Lookout Mountain’s central location. The only other 100+
entry trial in 2010 was DFABC’s April 24 th trial which drew 108 Dachshunds. Five additional trials,
all but one in the northeast, garnered entries of 84 or greater.
1 First licensed trial in region held by DFWDC in February 1997.
2 First DCA trial in region held in March 1996 under the aegis of Bayou DC. First licensed trial
held by Bayou DC in January 1998.
3 Dachshund field trial regulations were revised in November 2007 permitting regional clubs to
hold up to four trials per year instead of just two.
Out on the west coast, trial statistics “flipped” this year with the southern California trials averaging
higher entries due to the presence of the DCA Nationals while some of the Northwest clubs
struggled with lack of rabbits and running grounds. In the South, the loss of two weekends was
partially offset by the addition of a third day of DFWDC field trials in December. The Midwest
gained two trials as Buckeye DC initiated a spring weekend. Back east, DCNJ returned to its
normal calendar — in 2009, the club gave up its October weekend to accommodate the DCA
National field events in Maryland and Pennsylvania.
WINTER 2011 9 of 32

The fall witnessed the return of Houston DC, Cascade DC and Bayou DC to active field trialing.
Last winter, the two southern clubs had to cancel five days of trials slated for December and
January due to the total decimation of Baker Farms’ rabbit population by coyotes. Out west,
Cascade spent the spring looking for new running grounds.
HDC set up shop at Windsong Acres in Kirbyville, TX in late October. Trialgoers reported that the
rabbits were plentiful despite the dry and dusty weather. One of the highlights of the weekend was
Sunday’s OAAD winner, new DC Solo’s Premiere SL aka Primo. October was a busy time for
Primo and owner / handler Kim Vidrine. During the first week, Primo and Kim went Best of Breed
at the DCA National Specialty … for the second time. This MBIS, MBISS dog is just one more bit of
proof that we are lucky to be owned by Dachshunds.
After a few false starts, Cascade DC appears
to have found a new home at the Pacific Rim
Institute on Whidbey Island. The Institute is
a nature preserve dedicated to preserving the
prairie and forest ecosystems of the Puget
Sound. [Who knew there were prairies in the
northwest!] Club members had to put in
plenty of sweat equity — cutting lanes and
more — but held two days of trials in early
November. Cascade reports that they found
a good number of wild rabbits in residence
and plans to return to the Institute in the
spring.
The industrious members of Bayou DC also found themselves new running grounds, too. In fact,
they actually secured two new locations! The first of these, Carter Creek Kennels in Pricedale, MS
was the site for the club’s Thanksgiving weekend of trials. Carter Creek is a very large facility
owned by small pack Beagle enthusiasts. There are 8 separate pens although only one was used
for the Dachshund trials. The lush foliage made spotting rabbits a little harder for the Dachshund
folks more familiar with brace beagle grounds. Before Bayou’s fall 2011 weekend, though,
additional lanes will be cut to assist in spotting rabbits. The club’s January 2011 trials are slated
for another small-pack facility — the Honeysuckle Run grounds in Wesson, MS.
Field Champions
The largest single field champion stake in 2010 was the 48 dog entry won by FC Sunlight Reliant
Rex v Bakum aka Reggie at the DFABC trial on April 24 th . Metropolitan Atlanta’s March 27 th
event boasted the largest trial entry of field champions — 25 FCDs and 26 FCBs for a combined
total of 51. Field Champion Dog stake winner FC Audi Oslo von Dorndorf aka Oslo triumphed
over Field Champion Bitch stake winner DC Town Farm Water Wings aka Brooke before going
on to win absolute that day by defeating Open All Age Bitch stake winner and new dual champion
Amtekels Take A Bow RN aka Kaylee. Kaylee’s OAAB stake was the largest single stake run
during 2010 with 49 entries.
Over the course of the year, 127 field champions earned regular stake placements at member or
licensed Dachshund field trials. 79 of those dogs placed at least twice thereby making themselves
eligible for the DCA Field Trial merit standings. The top 20 dogs for 2010 are shown on the next
page. For those interested, a complete listing of the merit rankings can be found in the Files
section of the DCA Performance Events group on Yahoo. Prior quarter and prior year data is
also available there.
DCA FIELD TRIAL MERIT AWARDS: DCA Membership requirements for Awards will be in accordance with current policy as determined by the DCA Board for DCA Merit Award Programs.
Only those points earned for placements in the Field Champion stakes at AKC licensed or member trials will count toward the DCA Field Trial Merit Awards. Points are tabulated using the
Delaney System +1 for first through fourth place, based on the number of starters. In the case of ties, dogs will receive the same place award, with the next place(s) being skipped. A minimum
of two placements in Field Champion stakes during the award year are required to earn an award, and / or be included in preliminary listings.
WINTER 2011 11 of 32

It took more than 100 merit points to crack the Top 20 for the fourth year running. 21 dogs
surpassed that benchmark in 2010 including DC Lockshire Rain Shadow SW JE aka Rainey who
catapulted herself from 21 st to 16 th in the final standings by winning the FC stake at the Santa Ana
Valley trial on the very last day of the year. At least 150 points were needed to land in the Top
Ten for the third year in a row.
Congratulations to all! A hearty “well done” also to the many fine Dachshunds who did not finish in
the Top Twenty but nonetheless turned in fine performances throughout the year.
A special pat on the head is due to FC
Danika vom Nordlicht TD ME aka
Danika. The nearly five year old standard
wire is owned and handled by Cheri
Faust.
This is Danika’s fourth appearance in the
Top 10. She earned 23 placements and
five absolutes in 2010. Her 451 merit
point haul is a new record. It tops FC
Oscar von Zimmer JE’s 2003 total of
433. Danika is only the second dog to
earn more than 400 merit points in a year.
[A feat that Oscar accomplished three
times.]
Danika’s stellar performance throughout
the year brought more than just a #1
finish in the DCA standings, however.
With her November 14 th FCB win at
Buckeye DC’s trial, she pushed her
lifetime merit point total past the 1000
mark.
Danika is a trained blood tracker. In her leisure time, she
helps hunters find wounded game. Danika and Cheri are
shown here after a successful deer call in Wisconsin.
Two other dogs also surpassed the thousand point threshold in 2010. DC M'I Spy of Hathor
Farm SW CD RN TDX OA AXJ NAP OJP OF JE aka Shag, owned by Jean Dieden, did so by
placing in the FC stake at Northern California DC’s November 20 th trial. DC Siddachs Carmen MW
aka Carmen, owned by John Merriman and Sidney Stafford, went over the 1000 th point mark by
placing in the FCB stake at the December 12 th DFWDC field trial. This accomplishment capped off a
very good year for Carmen, who earned 8 plaques and led the merit standings for much of the
year.
These three dogs join the ranks of Ilsa (FC Ilsa v Dorndorf L), Toad (CT DC Sadsack The Cupid
Clone MW ME), Oscar (FC Longtime’s Oscar von Zimmer JE), Leo (FC Hurricane’s Leonardo Da
Franco CD JE), Lolly (FC Ulrika von Moosbach-Zuzelek SE), Littlest (DC Stardox Penny Lane v
Melwyn), Brooke (DC Town Farm Water Wings), and Ana Maria (FC Hurricane Ana Maria v Czar
SW JE) — the first eight field champions to accumulate 1000 lifetime DCA merit points. At 4.75
years of age, Danika and Carmen are the youngest dogs to ever pass this benchmark. Danika is
three whole days older than Carmen!
Metal Count
69 absolutes were awarded at AKC Dachshund field trials in 2010. 52 absolutes were won by a
field champion while 17 were earned by an open stake dog or bitch.
Nine field champions won more than one absolute during the year. A tenth dog, DC V Schwalbe’s
Etta James MW aka Etta, earned two – one as an open bitch in the spring and another as a field
champion in the fall.
