5 Why does your signature say ‘Anne’ when your name is Anna?<br />

Actually, my name is Anne, not Anna, but in Ireland they pronounce Anne like Ann,<br />

so therefore I call myself Anna - but I still use Anne in my signature.<br />

QUICK QUESTIONS FOR ANNA<br />

When did the collaboration w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>Rikki</strong> <strong>Tikki</strong> <strong>Company</strong> start, and why?<br />

In 2001, Ib Møller found my catalogue at a fair in Frankfurt, and in 2007, he inv<strong>it</strong>ed<br />

me to exhib<strong>it</strong> my work at ’Galleri Tavi’ in the famous, Danish village Skagen. The<br />

exhib<strong>it</strong>ion was a success, and we sold many pieces at the gallery. <strong>Be</strong>cause <strong>it</strong> was difficult,<br />

expensive and complicated to send framed paintings etc to Denmark, Ib Møller<br />

suggested that I should start cooperating w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>Rikki</strong> <strong>Tikki</strong>, and in 2008, the first 6<br />

drawings were ordered.<br />

How did you get the idea for ’The Silhouette People’?<br />

One day, I was trying to draw the emotion ’happiness’ - I wanted to use body language<br />

– I drew a person who was sad, and throughout about 12 consecutive sketches, this<br />

person ended up very happy – thus, I had found a way to illustrate emotions! The first<br />

silhouette people I drew all had a neck, but no details, since then they have gradually<br />

developed into their present detailed shapes, w<strong>it</strong>hout a neck! After this first drawing,<br />

I found out that I could even tell small stories through my drawings - at one point for<br />

example, I had to tell my then 5-year-old son, Karl, that his grandfather was ill, but<br />

that life is long. Therefore, I made a drawing called ‘Life’, and that was the first <strong>of</strong> my<br />

approximately 500 small stories.<br />

Why black and wh<strong>it</strong>e?<br />

I have always drawn, and, at the age <strong>of</strong> 18, I discovered ink drawing when trying to<br />

make illustrations for ’The Lord <strong>of</strong> the Rings’, which I had just read. The year after,<br />

I started at the univers<strong>it</strong>y, where I studied to be an arch<strong>it</strong>ectural engineer. There, we<br />

used some special pens w<strong>it</strong>h black ink, and since then, I have almost exclusively made<br />

black and wh<strong>it</strong>e drawings. Drawing w<strong>it</strong>h colours does not work very well for me. I see<br />

life as a long series <strong>of</strong> short stories which, to me, always begin w<strong>it</strong>hout colour. I think<br />

the importance lies more therein that they are colourless than that they are black and<br />

wh<strong>it</strong>e. I find <strong>it</strong> is easier to tell my stories w<strong>it</strong>hout having to consider what ‘the green<br />

hat’ or ‘the red shirt’ might mean!<br />

What else do you do?<br />

Since 1994, I have had my own company, which distributes to 30-35 stores here in<br />

Ireland, and I constantly draw new designs. The newest products are trad<strong>it</strong>ional Celtic<br />

designs such as ’Mná na h Eireánn’ or ’Celtic Love Knot’ and ’Guardian Angel’, which<br />

are very popular right now. I also have an internet shop w<strong>it</strong>h all <strong>of</strong> my 500+ prints,<br />

original drawings and books - and I have started to paint my silhouette shapes (oil on<br />

canvas), which I am very into at the moment. I have made designs for ceramics and<br />

three series <strong>of</strong> silver and gold, and I have published three books w<strong>it</strong>h my short stories.<br />

Furthermore, I <strong>of</strong>ten receive special orders <strong>of</strong> different kinds such as doing the illustrations<br />

for an Irish collection <strong>of</strong> poems or Shirley’s idea about an eco village made out <strong>of</strong><br />

cork. At the moment I am creating new Celtic designs for 2013 – I am very fortunate<br />

that my job is also my hobby.<br />
