The original front emblem and horn button on the "Autorama"
Corvette featured crossed American and Checkered flags. It was
discovered that using an American flag on a product trade mark
was against the law and the emblem was changed before the New
York Motorama.
The only thing really new on the 1953 Corvette was the fiberglass
body. Everything else was directly off the Chevrolet parts shelf.
Because of this, the first Corvette was essentially a regular 1952
Chevrolet that looked like a million dollars!
The first Corvettes were actually "rolled" off the assembly
line. Chevrolet was not prepared for grounding to a
fiberglass body; the cars would not start.

From the Prez,
It is hard to believe 2 years as your President have passed by! I would like to thank the membership and
especially my board for the dedication to Corvettes of Fresno! Without all of you this club would not
function. We had a very successful two years along with two great Tahoe events even this last year with
the economy being what it is Tahoe 41 was a success. And again without all of you this would not have
happened! But this is just the beginning, Tahoe 42 is fast approaching, we are looking for an ambitious
person to chair Tahoe 42 and there are lot members willing to help out.
I would like to welcome our new board, and our new fearless leader President Jon Devoe. We
thought he entertained us before just wait he will do a great job! I welcome Nick DiLiddo as our 1 st vice
President in charge of Activities with Nick’s experience I promise he won’t let you down. Also coming
back for her second term is
Valerie Merritt as our membership chairperson or 2 nd Vice President, not to mention our new Secretary
Terry Cavanaugh, she has been there and done that before as well! And I want to personally thank her
for that. Harry Bellow is our new Treasure with his experience as treasure along with support from Gene
Fox you can be assured your club money will be well taken care of! Jim Agar is our new newsletter editor
Jim brings a lot of experience and as everyone has seen a great news letter. And last but not least Al Hall
as our Webmaster; I think we all know where we would be with out Al. Also as a note Roger Merritt has
step up to be our new Governor for WSCC. I almost forgot I would like to thank Tina Surrondo for the
excellent job she did with NCCC as governess, and would like her to know that was a rough period
between Corvettes of Fresno and NCCC. But I think we made the right move, only time will tell!
Just a heads up the Veterans Day parade is coming up and as usual I am sure Billie Talley will do a
great job representing Corvettes of Fresno. I realize a lot of us are still working for the other guy and it
is difficult when your employer doesn’t recognize Veterans Day as a holiday. But as I stated I am sure
we will be well represented, thank you Billie. Also, Nick DiLiddo is planning the 2010 Ice Breaker,
February 20, 2010. Where will Ice Breaker be going you might ask, where else, Monterey. Is there a
better place to kick off the new Corvette season? Except of course Cayucos right Dave! What a great and
delicious Ice Breaker we had in 2009! Okay folks there is a group headed north to the Family and Friends
Holiday Dinner on Saturday the 5 th of December. Check with Bruce Looney if you’re interested. I
guarantee you will have a great time! And on December 12, the Sherman’s and the Haney’s are
sponsoring a run to a Christmas Show Melodrama in Pismo Beach. And I am sure you won’t go wrong
attending their run as they are great hosts. And last but not least Corvettes of Fresno’s Annual Christmas
party on Tuesday December 15, 2009. Don’t miss it and don’t forget to bring your old raffle tickets.
Oh and by the way I will still be on your board as your Past President so needless to say I will not ever
forget to SAVE THE WAVE! We will see ya all at the General Meeting Tuesday, November 17, 2009. And
thanks again for all of your support!
Sincerely you’re Prez
SKYLINE DRIVE CORVETTE CLUB - CALIFORNIA CRUISIN’
On September 10th six SDC couples flew to Reno Nevada. This was the start of a 20 day road trip touring California.
You see they had their Corvette’s Fed Exed to Champion Chevrolet in Reno a week earlier. Here are the highlights:
The Fed Ex crew was great. They showed they really knew how to baby nice cars. The cost to go out and back was
approximately $2400 per car. We encountered incredible hospitality from the Corvette Club’s. Special thanks go out to
Lisa Mitchell of the Reno CC, Barbara Coe of the Lake Tahoe CC, Allen and Nancy Teixeira and Bruce from the Fresno
CC, Lonnie Armstrong of the Napa Valley CC. All of these people went above and beyond the call of duty to help us out
and make us feel welcome. And we can’t forget Jack Stanko from Champion Chevrolet for keeping our Corvette’s safe
until we arrived.
And then there were: Camel races in Virginia City, Caves in Oregon, Breathtaking ride down the California coastal
highway, Lombard Street in San Francisco, The Golden Gate Bridge, Giant Redwood and Sequoia trees, Yosemite
National park, 113 F in Death Valley, Route 66, Wigwam motel on rt 66, Hearst Castle, Riding through a herd of cattle,
And a whole lot more.
The trip ended in Phoenix where we dropped the cars off at the home of Bob Yoder and Elaine Petrich.
They just happen to be good friends of the Whitmoyers. Bob and Elaine went out of their way to make us feel
welcome in their home. The FedEx truck picked up the cars at their house the day after we flew back to Reading.
Finally, many thanks go to Albie for his role as master planner of the trip. Every thing worked smoothly and was well
thought out. Gloria also earned accolades for being a first rate navigator.
Our recent trip out west was really awesome. But we were especially pleased with the overwhelming hospitality
exhibited buy the 3 Corvette Clubs we encountered. Thanks so very much for helping us on our journey.
Regarding club jackets: The club currently has five members wanting to purchase jackets. Allen stated
that the club jackets have to be ordered in multiples of ten. The Board has discussed this issue and
the Board suggests for CoF to have an inventory of different sized jackets on hand to be available for
the club members to purchase. The Board is requesting member approval to borrow the money from
the Tahoe account to fund this inventory. The cost would be approximately $1,000 and once members
purchase a jacket the money would then be deposited back into the Tahoe account. This issue raised
concern among many of the club members and several questions were asked. It was determined that
this issue will be tabled until the November General meeting. This will be discussed in more detail at
the November Board meeting and we will look at both the Tahoe account and the General account to
decide which account will fund the inventory. All members are welcome to attend the Board meeting if
they would like to voice their concerns.
Does anyone know how to invoke the tire sensor relearn program?
Unfortunately, your C6 is not like the C5 in that regard. Relearning on the C6 requires a real tool instead of just a magnet.
Once you have the tool, this is the procedure:
Document ID# 1550440
2006 Chevrolet Corvette
Tire Pressure Sensor Learn
Tools Required
J-46079 Tire Pressure Monitor Diagnostic Tool
TPM Learn Mode Description
The tire pressure monitor (TPM) system uses the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR), body control module (BCM), keyless
entry transmitter, 4 radio frequency transmitting pressure sensors, and the serial data circuit to perform the TPM learn mode
functions. The sensor learn procedure must be performed after each tire rotation, RCDLR replacement, or tire pressure sensor
replacement.
Once the TPM learn mode has been enabled, each of the sensors unique identification (ID) codes can be learned into the RCDLR's
memory. When the RCDLR receives a sensor's transmission, it sends a serial data message to the BCM to sound a horn chirp. This
verifies the sensor has transmitted its ID code and the RCDLR has received and learned it. The RCDLR must learn the sensor IDs in
the proper order to determine sensor location. The first learned ID is assigned to the left front location, the second to right front, the
third to right rear and the fourth to left rear.
Sensor Function Using J-46079
Each sensor has an internal low frequency (LF) coil. When the J-46079 used in activate mode it produces an LF transmission that
activates the sensor. The sensor responds to an LF activation by transmitting in learn mode. When the RCDLR receives a learn mode
transmission while in TPM learn mode, it will assign that sensor's ID to the location on the vehicle relative to the order in which it
was learned.
TPM Learn Mode Cancellation
The RCDLR will cancel the TPM learn mode if more than 2 minutes have passed and no sensors have been learned, or if more than 5
minutes have passed for the entire procedure. If the learn mode is cancelled before any sensor IDs are learned, the RCDLR will
remember all previously stored IDs and their locations. As soon as the RCDLR learns the first sensor ID, all previously stored IDs
are erased from the RCDLR's memory.
Sensor Learn Procedure
Important: Before proceeding with the procedure below, ensure that no other learn procedure is being performed simultaneously.
Select the ACC position on the ignition switch. Simultaneously press the keyless entry transmitter lock and unlock buttons until a
horn chirp sounds, indicating the TPM learn mode has been enabled. Starting with the left front tire, hold the antenna of the J-46079
against the tire sidewall close to the wheel rim at the valve stem location then press and release the Activate button and wait for a
horn chirp.
After the horn chirp sounds, proceed as in step 3 for the next 3 sensors in the following order:
Right front
Right rear
Left rear
After the left rear sensor is learned, a double horn chirp will sound indicating all sensor IDs have been learned.
Select the OFF position on the ignition switch to exit the TPM learn mode.
A man decided that he was going to ride a 10-speed bike from Phoenix to Flagstaff. He
got as far as Black Canyon City before the mountains became just too much and he
could go no further. He stuck his thumb out, but after 3 hours, he hadn't gotten a single
person to stop. Finally, a guy in a Corvette pulled over and offered him a ride. Of
course, the bike wouldn't fit in the car. The corvette owner found a piece of rope lying
by the highway and tied it to his bumper. He tied the other end to the bike and told the
man that if he was going to fast, to honk the horn on his bike and he would slow down.
Everything went fine for the first 30 miles. Suddenly, another Corvette blew past them.
Not to be outdone, the Corvette pulling the bike took off after the other. A short
distance down the road, the Corvettes, both going well over 120 mph, blew through a
speed trap.
The police officer noted the speed from his radar gun and radio to the other officer that
he has two Corvettes headed his way at over 120 mph. HE then relayed, "... and you're
not going to believe this, but there's a guy on a 10-speed bike honking to pass!"

On Saturday at 12:30 PM twelve Corvettes left Fresno from the McDonald’s parking lot at Fresno & Shaw.
We traveled North on Highway 41 to Road 200 continuing to the town of North Fork. Just as we turned
onto the North Fork Road we came across a whole group of Cobras entering from the O’Neal Road. They
followed us to North Fork and they went on to Bass Lake. We stopped at the North Fork ranger station for
our first stop to stretch our legs, visit, etc. Leaving the ranger station we proceeded through South Fork
and connected with the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway Road that goes to Mammoth Pool. Due to the wet road
conditions further ahead on the road, we had our turn around point at the Mammoth Pool overlook rest
stop at about 5,400 feet elevation.
The scenery was breath taking beautiful and quite serene. From this point one can see the Sierra Divide,
which had snow on the peaks as it had snowed the week before. Our Corvettes were the only travelers at
the site. We had a long rest stop there enjoying a few snacks, drinks and candy. On the road again we
backtracked to the North Fork ranger station for another stop then on to our final destination for dinner.
Arriving near North Fork we again picked up the same Cobras but we had to stop at the station.
We arrived in Fresno for our mystery dinner at Cedar & Herndon Avenues for a great time at the Bella
Pasta. We had the banquet room to ourselves and they really took great care of us. We had appetizers,
drinks, dinner and desert. We had a very great group of people on our run that supported us with great
communications throughout the day. It turned out to be a beautiful day for a Corvette run and Jim & I
wish to thank all who joined us on our run. Jim & Joan Kozera

David Hill
(2006 Induction)
David Hill has often been seen at the annual Corvette Hall of Fame banquet, program in hand, requesting
autographs of the inductees.
Hill's contributions to the Corvette are so well recognized that his Hall of Fame nomination was almost
simultaneous with his retirement announcement. Corvette's third chief engineer, Hill took over development of
the C5 from Dave McLellan and saw it through to completion during some of GM's
darkest days when the very survival of the car was in doubt.
“The C5 upgraded all the things Corvettes were good at and fixed all the things they
were lousy at,” says Hill, and the automotive world agreed. That success was followed
by the resurrection of a legendary RPO, the Z06 Corvette, and then Hill's crowning
achievements, the C6 and C6 Z06, a direct result of Hill's collaborative approach with
Corvette Racing.
Hill's work ethic and insistence on perfection made his team and his car a world
beater; his keen understanding of the need for profitability raised the Corvette to a
level of success and status within GM that it has never known before. Maybe posterity
will agree with Joe Spielman's assessment that, “Corvette is here today because of Dave Hill.”
Noland Adams
(2003 Induction)
Noland Adams, is a well known author and Corvette historian, whose works include a series of technical books -
“The Complete Corvette Restoration & Technical Guide,” (Volume I, 1953 to 1962; Volume II, 1963-1967 model
years), “Corvette, American Legend,” covering the original dream car prototype and 1953 production, and the
follow up series, “1954 and 1955 Production,” “1956 Production,” “1957 Racing and Production details,” and
“1958 to 1960 Variations.” Adams has hosted a series of restoration videotapes, written hundreds of articles for
Corvette related magazines, and has given numerous presentations on Corvette
restoration all over the United States, plus seminars in Canada, Sweden and England. A
consultant to the model car industry, Adams was the technical advisor on Monogram’s
1953 Corvette model car kit and Franklin Mint’s 1953 Corvette model.
He is known world-wide for his knowledge of Corvette development heritage and
technical understanding and is a longtime member of the National Corvette Restorers
Society. Adams has been involved with Corvette for over 45 years and is president of
the Solid Axle Corvette Club. He attends many Corvette shows and functions each year
sharing his Corvette expertise and knowledge with Corvette enthusiasts everywhere.
2009 Corvette Racing Overview
The 2009 season marks Corvette Racing's 10th anniversary in
international road racing. The team made its competition debut in
February 1999 in the Daytona 24-hour race, finishing third and 12th.
Since that modest start, Corvette Racing has become one of the
world's premier production sports car teams, winning eight
consecutive ALMS GT1 manufacturers and team championships and
seven straight ALMS GT1 drivers' titles.
Corvette Racing won 77 of the 105 races it contested through June
2009. The team's list of accomplishments includes 54 one-two
finishes, six class victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, seven class
wins in the Sebring 12-hour enduro, seven class titles in the 1,000mile/10-hour
Petit Le Mans, and an overall victory in the Daytona 24hour
race.
The 2009 season is a year of transition for Corvette Racing. The team competed in the GT1 class in the
season-opening Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the Grand Prix of Long Beach in preparation for its
10th participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 13-14. Following its return from France, Corvette
Racing began its transition to the GT2 category at the Mid-Ohio round of the ALMS as the team prepared
for the 2010 season program under new global GT rules.
Corvette Racing revised its driver lineup for the 2009 American Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le
Mans. Antonio Garcia joins defending ALMS GT1 champions Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen in the
No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R for the Sebring 12-hour, Le Mans 24-hour, and 1000-mile Petit Le Mans
endurance races. Marcel Fassler is teamed with 2005-07 GT1 champions Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta
in the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R in the three long-distance races. Canadian Ron Fellows, a member
of Corvette Racing since its inception, continues with the team in an advisory and ambassadorial role.
The Corvette C6.R race program continues Chevrolet's tradition of racing production-based vehicles to
improve the breed. It is a commitment that has taken Chevy's two-seater from the runways of Sebring in
the '50s to Le Mans in the 21st century. The continuous exchange of information and the constant transfer
of technology between the racing and production programs ensure that lessons learned on the track
benefit every Corvette on the highway.
Corvette Racing has followed the strategy first mapped out by legendary racer/engineer Zora Arkus-
Duntov to put Corvette in the racing spotlight. Duntov launched Corvette on a motorsports odyssey that
has taken the marque to race tracks around the world. It is a plan that still inspires those who have
followed in Duntov's footsteps.
"More than 50 years ago, Zora Arkus-Duntov, the godfather of Corvette Racing, conceived the Corvette SS
race car to put Corvette squarely in the arena of international
endurance racing," said Ed Peper, North American Vice
President, Chevrolet. "As we reflect on Corvette Racing's record
of success over the last decade, it's clear that the Corvette C6.R
has realized Zora's dream."
"Corvette Racing sets the standard for engineering excellence,
preparation and commitment in the American Le Mans Series,"
Peper said. "The team prepares and races with all of the
passion and skill that have made Corvette Racing a premier
production sports car racing team. The drivers, mechanics,
engineers, support personnel and team managers of Corvette
Racing have made everyone at Chevrolet proud."

For all of the team's success in the last 10 seasons, perhaps its
most significant victory to date was its overall win in the
inaugural ALMS Green Challenge on Oct. 4, 2008, a "race within
a race" contested in conjunction with Petit Le Mans. Working
with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S
Department of Energy, and SAE International, the series
organizers and the Argonne National Laboratory determined the
"greenest" entries in the Prototype and GT classes based on
energy used, greenhouse gases emitted, and petroleum fuels
displaced. The Green Challenge was designed to recognize the
fastest car with the smallest environmental impact - and when
the results were tallied, Corvette Racing's No. 3 Compuware
Corvette C6.R had the best score among the 37 entries, securing
the GT team award for Corvette Racing and the GT manufacturer award for GM.
Corvette Racing has also won accolades away from the track. In February 2006,
the championship-winning Corvette C6.R race car was named the "North
American Car of the Year" over marques such as Audi, Aston Martin and Maserati
by dailysportscar.com, a noted online magazine that provides in-depth coverage
of sports car and GT series worldwide. In November 2006, Corvette Racing's
LS7.R small-block V-8 was honored as the "Global Motorsport Engine of the Year"
at the inaugural Professional Motorsport World Expo in Cologne, Germany. The
award was voted by an expert panel of 50 key race engine engineers
representing the spectrum of motorsports.
The Corvette C6.R race car is the most technically advanced sports car ever
developed by GM, combining sophisticated chassis, powertrain and aerodynamic
technology developed by GM Racing with the advanced engineering of the sixthgeneration
Corvette, Corvette Z06, and Corvette ZR1 production models. The
Corvette C6.R has strong links to its showroom counterpart, as required by the ALMS and Le Mans rules
that mandate close adherence to production specifications. For example, the same hydroformed frame
rails used in production Corvettes provide a strong foundation for the race cars. The race-prepared LS7.R
engine shares its architecture with the production 505-horsepower LS7 small-block V-8 that powers the
Corvette Z06.
"We have a saying that we race around the clock and win around the world," explained Chevy Racing
marketing manager Todd Christensen. "The coverage that the Corvette Racing team receives has
propelled Corvette and Chevrolet onto the world stage. The people who own Corvettes are very aware of
the product, and they understand how racing enhances the cars they drive."
For more than 50 years, racing has played a key role in defining Corvette as America's performance icon.
Corvette's first class victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1956 was the first step onto the world stage
that established its reputation as a contender in top-level competition. Now, with eight ALMS
manufacturers championships, seven drivers championships and six GT1 class victories in the 24 Hours of
Le Mans, America's favorite sports car now stands at the pinnacle of international endurance racing.

Can waxes be "Layered"?
Waxes can be layered, but two things must be tended to when layering waxes. 1) You must use the right waxes ("Layerable"
waxes), and 2) You must recognize that at some point, "The Law of Diminishing Returns" takes effect.
Layerable waxes
A Layerable wax, is a wax that the protective ingredients used in the formula (natural and synthetic), are such that the
protective layer left behind will not only adhere to the paint, but in subsequent applications, will adhere to itself. It also means
that the carrying agents, be they solvent, water or something else, cannot be strong enough or in high enough concentrations to
re-liquefy the previously applied layer, thus removing it during your attempt to add another layer. Layerable waxes are
primarily pure waxes, or protectants (as synthetic formulas are referred to) that do not contain chemical cleaners, or solvents
that will remove the previous layer.
There is an exception to this rule and that is that it is possible to first apply a cleaner wax, and then apply a pure wax or pure
synthetic over it.
The Law of Diminishing Returns
While this theory is generally used to discuss topics as they relate to the areas of economics and politics, it is a model that can
also be used to explain in this case, the complex action occurring at the microscopic level on the surface of your car's finish.
The law of diminishing returns as it relates to layering, a surface, such as an automotive paint, can only hold so much product
before all you're doing is removing all subsequent coatings applied to the surface.
That is to say, after the first, second and in some cases a third application/coating, any more product applied to the surface is
merely removed when you wipe the excess off after waiting for the product to cure.
At this point you've reached a plateau (or limit), as to how much wax (natural or synthetic) a surface can hold. Once you reach
this plateau, all further applications of wax simply become excess that will be removed (and thus wasted), during wipe-off
because it has nowhere to attach and layer.
Of course, this all depends upon your definition of the word "Layer". If your definition of the word layer follows that of
Webster's Dictionary:
One thickness, course, or fold, laid or lying over or under another
Then yes, you can layer to a certain point. For example, you can add multiple layers of layerable waxes until the limit to how
much a given surface of an automotive paint can hold before each additional application is simply removed, or replaces a
previously applied layer.
You cannot layer to the point of developing a measurable film-build without negatively affecting, or diminishing to some degree,
the shine, optical clarity, gloss, reflectivity, depth of color etc. This is especially true if the product you're applying is not clear
(in and of itself) to start with.
If your definition of the word "layer" follows that of definition used by some on the Internet,
Layer 1: To continually build a greater level of protection with each additional application, or
layer, of a wax or protectant. (Natural or synthetic)
Layer 2: To continually increase shine, optical clarity, gloss, reflectivity, depth of color without
end and/or after a plateau, or point of maximum potential has been achieved.
Then no, you cannot layer a wax, synthetic, natural, or otherwise.

New Corvette Plant Manager Arrives
Bowling Green is proud to welcome Bob Parcell as the new plant manager of
the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant. Parcell began work for GM
in 1979 as a co-op student, and most recently served at president of Cami
Automotive, a joint venture between GM and Suzuki in Canada.
"If you are in this business... the business of building cars, this is a dream job.
We've all dreamt of one day running the Corvette plant," said Parcell.
Former manager, Paul Graham, has moved to Arlington Assembly Plant in
Texas to oversee the production of conventional and hybrid versions of the
Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade.
Corvettes Movie Awards
Great Moments In Corvette Celluloid
There's Never Been A Great Corvette Movie,
But There Have Been Great Corvettes In Movies
Any Mustang guy will tell you that Bullitt is the greatest Mustang movie of all time. Dodge guys love Vanishing
Point. Street-rodders all know American Graffiti backwards and forwards. There isn't a Porsche guy on earth
who hasn't sat through Steve McQueen's Le Mans without imagining himself behind the wheel of 917. Heck,
AMC Pacer fans flock to Wayne's World. But there's never really been a great Corvette movie.
Oh, there have been Corvettes in movies, but counting cars parked in the background is a cheat. There's even
been one movie that was actually about a Corvette and had the word "Corvette" in its title, but calling 1978's
Corvette Summer a great movie is an irrational stretch. Corvettes have been used as hero cars, as the cars of
villains, as props for mayhem, and as objects of desire and envy in movies, but there has never been that one
film that fixes in the public's collective mind the essence of the Corvette's personality.
Why is this so? While there's some real heft behind a couple of conspiracy theories, the truth is that cars are
cast in films in about the same way that actors are: They get into the movie only if they fill the role correctly.
It's hard to root for a hero who has all the advantages, and if a hero has a Corvette ... well, it's pretty obvious
that things have already been going his way in life. That's why-though on occasion heroes drive a Corvette-it's
more common for the heavy (who the hero will eventually overcome and vanquish) to own the sleek two-seater.
Plus there's the simple fact that often a story requires three people to ride in a car (and this is a bigger factor
than it might at first seem).
Award One
Dorian Gray Award for Best Reflection of Decrepitude
Boogie Nights (1997)
When porn star Dirk Diggler buys his orange '77 C3, it's new and it's pristine. But as time
goes by and he becomes more debauched and more desperate, the car spirals downward
with him. By the end of the film, he's a wreck and so is the car.
Award Two
Pamela Anderson Award for Startling Over-Inflation
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
According to Josh Hancock, automotive consultant on all of the Austin Powers movies,
the red, white, and blue '65 roadster driven by "Felicity Shagwell" wasn't anything
special. "It was just a nonmatching small-block car that wasn't in particularly good
shape," he recalls. "It couldn't have been worth much more than, oh, at most 15 grand."
Except, of course, that it had been in a movie.
But dang if someone didn't think that being in a movie mattered. In an online auction run
by New Line Cinema, the studio that released the film the summer of 1999, the car was
sold for an unfathomable $121,000. Did actress Heather Graham leave a particularly
adorable dent in the seat? For that kind of money, her butt should still have been in it.
Award Three: Best Tiny Corvette In A Chase Scene The Dead Pool (1988)
As the fifth movie in Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry series, The Dead Pool came out
when most of the good ideas had already been played out and the weariness was
obvious. But there was one amazing exception in the form of a chase through the
streets of San Francisco between Harry and his partner in an Oldsmobile sedan
(remember when they made those?) and a radio-controlled, scale-model midyear
Stingray carrying an explosive charge.
The scene plays as a sly parody of the classic chase in Bullitt, but also works on
its own at being both suspenseful and unique. Too bad the rest of the movie is
such a disappointment.

Award Four
Best Flight
Con Air (1997)
In what's probably the single most improbable series of events ever depicted in a
Jerry Bruckheimer-produced film (and his films are nothing but improbable series
of events), DEA Agent Duncan Malloy (Colm Meaney) watches his '67 Elkhart Blue
roadster being dragged into the sky behind a C-123 cargo plane. It's not a perfect
sequence (a lot of the computer-graphics work looks like, well, computer
graphics), but for sheer audacity combined with over-the-top ludicrousness, it
may be one of the most memorable scenes in Corvette filmic history.
Bonus points if you notice the early C4 that gets smushed in the finale by the
same C-123. Don't cheat on the scoring! The only person you hurt is yourself.
Award Five
Best Corvette Unrecognizable As A Corvette
Live And Let Die (1973)
The first James Bond movie featuring Roger Moore is filled with Chevrolets, and much of the stunt driving
was actually done by the Chevy-sponsored Joie Chitwood thrill-show team. At first glance, the most
memorable car in the film, however, appears to be a white Cadillac Eldorado dripping in such excessive
ornamentation that it should just sink though the Manhattan Island. But
it's not really an Eldorado at all.
In fact, the white pimpmobile, with its deadly dart-shooting sideview
mirror, is a "Corvorado" which is a C3 under a crust of fiberglass molded to
look like an Eldorado's fenders. The Corvorado was (and presumably still
is) the product of Dunham Coach of Boonton, New Jersey. The Corvette
origins of the car are most obvious in interior shots.
Award Six
Most Dangerous Stunt
2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
In films, some stunts look easy and risk-free, and are in fact horribly tough and dangerous. And some
stunts look horribly tough and dangerous and are, in fact, amazingly safe and simple. But in this past
summer's 2 Fast 2 Furious, one C5 roadster was sacrificed in a stunt that was truly tough and dangerous.
After a Saleen Mustang was crushed under a semi's trailer, it was always intended that stunt man Sam
Maloof would plow the C5 into the wreckage along a Florida highway. "What's the worst thing that could
happen?" Stunt Coordinator Artie Malesci says the production team asked themselves. "The worst thing
that could happen was the car would roll over." And in fact that's what happened as the C5, which wasn't
equipped with a rollcage, hit the Mustang and rolled over.
Fortunately, because the stunt team had prepared for the worst, there was a grab strap across the
passenger seat of the car. "He pulled himself down under the dashboard, which is the strongest part of
the car. It was a scary moment, but he's a tough guy too."
So Maloof wasn't injured; but since the stunt hadn't gone as planned, another C5 was prepared to redo it
the next day. Fortunately, when the filmmakers saw the footage, they decided it was so spectacular that
Maloof's near-catastrophe remained in the film.

Award Seven: Most Spectacular Stunt XXX (2002)
The 2,428-foot-long Auburn-Foresthill Bridge near Sacramento, California, rises 730 feet
over the American River's north fork and is reportedly the third highest in the United
States. Throwing a Corvette off it seemed to be a good idea to the makers of XXX,
especially if legendary BASE jumper Tim Rigby was "surfing" it down.
Doubling for star Vin Diesel, Rigby rode the hollowed-out C5 down as 18 cameras caught
the action. Fortunately (they think of everything!) Rigby had a parachute and floated
down to the riverbed. What happened to the Corvette can't be called a "float."
After Diesel's character is arrested for that bridge stunt, what does he say after being hit
with a government tranquilizer dart? "It was only a Corvette."
Award Eight
Movie With "Corvette" In The Title No One Has Ever Seen
High Rolling In A Hot Corvette (1977)
"It was about an expatriate living in Australia who conceives a plan to rob a bus," remembers
High Rolling In A Hot Corvette star Joseph Bottoms from his Santa Barbara, California, home.
"I don't think it was ever released here, but I'm sure it was made for this market. The Corvette
didn't play that much of a role in it. And the characters probably ripped it off."
An Australian movie, set in Australia, made by Australians in Australia but featuring a
Corvette? Go figure. However, it was, according to Bottoms, the first film for famed Australian
actress Judy Davis who has gone on to be nominated for Academy Awards twice and win an
Emmy and a Golden Globe for portraying Judy Garland in a TV miniseries.
Award Nine
Best Astronaut Movie
Apollo 13 (1995)
During the '60s and '70s Chevrolet issued Corvettes to U.S. astronauts as if they popped out of a
Pez dispenser. So whenever there's a movie about astronauts, there's often a Corvette in it some
place-or at least talked about. "You know, it's funny," astronaut Gordon Cooper (Dennis Quaid)
says in 1983's the otherwise Corvette-free The Right Stuff. "Here I am, I got me $25 grand a
year for a magazine contract, got a free house with all the furnishings, got me a Corvette, got a
free lunch from one end of America to the other, and I ain't even been up there yet."
In a nip-and-tuck race with 1983's Terms of Endearment where broken down astronaut Jack
Nicholson steers his '78 Silver Anniversary coupe into the ocean with his feet, the best astronaut
and Corvette movie is Apollo 13. Mostly because, in addition to the red '70 driven by Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks)whose
stalling forebodes ill for the spacecraft-Ken Mattingly (Gary Sinise) parks a War Bonnet Yellow '71 just as
the Apollo 13 rocket lifts off. That's two Corvettes, and no other astronaut movie we know of has more than
one.
Award Ten
Orson Welles Award For Sheer Quantity
Mr. Deeds (2002)
When local boy Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler) inherits billions, he buys red
Corvettes for virtually everyone in the town of Mandrake Falls, New Hampshire. For the
most part, this misbegotten remake of the Gary Cooper 1936 classic, Mr. Deeds Goes
To Town, isn't worth the cost of a rental-except for that one scene of Mandrake Falls
(actually New Milford, Connecticut) almost submerged under a sea of Magnetic Red
and Torch Red C5s.
There were actually about 30 Corvettes used in the scene with many recruited from local clubs, including the
Candlewood Valley Corvette Club, Long Island Corvette Club, and the Monroe Corvette Club. The production
company, however, owned the one Torch Red convertible wrecked by Steve Buscemi's character.
