<strong>Tae</strong>kwon <strong>Do</strong>!<br />

To celebrate the founding of <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong>, why<br />

not read both volumes of <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> and I by<br />

General Choi Hong-Hi, which explains the<br />

history of <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong>, or tell the story of its<br />

creation to your students if you teach a class?<br />

This article was created in order to celebrate the<br />

success of <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong>, and to celebrate 56<br />

years of kicks and blocks, of strikes and kihaps, and positive life-changing experiences. It<br />

will offer good ideas of ways to celebrate <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong>’s birthday, whether when teaching<br />

a class or when practicing by yourself. To remember big events in <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong>’s history,<br />

below is a timeline of memorable moments in <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong>.<br />

• November 9, 1918- General Choi Hong-Hi is born, the father of <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> and the<br />

ITF<br />

• March 1929- Nam <strong>Tae</strong>-Hi, <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> pioneer, is born<br />

• 1932- Choi’s calligraphy teacher shows him <strong>Tae</strong>kkyon techniques, later incorporated<br />

into TKD<br />

• 1938- Choi goes to Japan and learns Shotokan Karate after knocking out a man he<br />

lost money to<br />

• 1943- Park Jung <strong>Tae</strong>, <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> pioneer, the father of the GTF is born<br />

• April 11, 1955- <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> is founded<br />

• 1959- The Korean <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> Association was founded<br />

• March 1959- <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> is demonstrated abroad for the first time<br />

• March 22, 1966- The International <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> Federation is founded<br />

• 1969- First Asian <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> Championships<br />

• 1969- the ATA is founded<br />

• November 30, 1972- The Kukkiwon is finished<br />

• May 28, 1973- The World <strong>Tae</strong>kwondo Federation is founded<br />

• 1974- First Senior ITF World Championships<br />

• 1976- First ITF European Championships<br />

Celebrating 56 56 Years Years Of Of TKD TKD<br />

<strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong>, the way of the hands and<br />

the feet, will celebrate its 56 th birthday<br />

on April 11 th . It was 56 years ago, in<br />

1955, that this martial art was officially<br />

founded after years of dedication to<br />

its creation by General Choi Hong-Hi.<br />

Since then, <strong>Tae</strong>kwon-<strong>Do</strong> has acquired<br />

over 70 million practitioners<br />

worldwide and become one of the<br />

most popular martial arts.
