As we roll into August I’d like to remind those
folks going on the President’s Mystery Run that
your remaining $300 deposit is needed by our
August 20 th meeting. Right now, we have 24
couples going and already almost half of you have
paid the entire $600 trip fee well in advance.
Pam and I are doing our best to provide a great
time during October 4-6. This one is going to be a
bit different, but we think very interesting and
above all fun. As mentioned prior, we are going to
places that CVC has never been to before.
Our March 29th to April 13th Southwest Tour-2 run
is not that many months off and if you are one of
the 14 cars that signed up, we are having a potluck
on Saturday, September 21 st at 4pm at the home of
Jim and Joan Kozera.
Let’s meet at the Target parking lot at Blackstone
and Bullard at 3:15pm and we will caravan over.
The Kozera’s who are with Corvettes of Fresno,
will be joining us on the excursion. They are
anxious to meet you and are graciously providing
hamburgers, hotdogs, condiments, paper plates,
napkins, utensils and an assortment of soft drinks
and water. They also have more than enough chairs
for everyone. The rest of us need to bring a side
dish such as chips, salad, beans, deserts, or your
favorite homemade recipe. A signup sheet will be
distributed so we get a good variety of vittles.
I will be passing out your travel books which detail
our upcoming experience. Topics for discussion
include going over the itinerary, contingency plans
in the event of health or breakdown issues, gauging
interest on a few side trips, answering any and all
questions and just getting time to visit and relax. If
you are still considering this trip, but haven’t
committed you are still invited to come, but we will
need to know so we can plan the food accordingly.
Lastly, in talking with Linda Laningham at our last
board meeting, she said it is already time to start
accepting candidates for the 2014 CVC board.
Linda will be passing around nomination forms at
this month’s meeting, so start thinking about who
you would like to see lead our club next year.
Hope to see you on Tuesday August 20 th at 6:30pm.

Hey guys, it’s me again. Have I told you lately how much I appreciate all of the runs you have
hosted, making my job very easy? We could use another run in October (Can you say Harvest
Festival?) and a couple of runs in November; but otherwise, we have at least 2 a month thru the
rest of the year. Now we need to start working on next year. Do you believe it; we are over
half-way thru the year? Fun, Fun, Fun Gotta Run!?! Be blessed, Pam
I called my friend Andy Sable, a
gastroenterologist, to make an appointment
for a colonoscopy.
A few days later, in his office, Andy
showed me a color diagram of the colon, a
lengthy organ that appears to go all over the
place, at one point passing briefly through
Minneapolis.
Then Andy explained the colonoscopy
procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring
and patient manner.
I nodded thoughtfully, but I didn't really
hear anything he said, because my brain was
shrieking, 'HE'S GOING TO STICK A
TUBE 17,000 FEET UP YOUR BEHIND!'
I left Andy's office with some written
instructions, and a prescription for a product
called 'MoviPrep,' which comes in a box
large enough to hold a microwave oven. I
will discuss MoviPrep in detail later; for
now suffice it to say that we must never
allow it to fall into the hands of America's
enemies.
I spent the next several days productively
sitting around being nervous.
Then, on the day before my colonoscopy, I
began my preparation. In accordance with
my instructions, I didn't eat any solid food
that day; all I had was chicken broth, which
is basically water, only with fewer flavors.
Then, in the evening, I took the MoviPrep.
You mix two packets of powder together in
a one-liter plastic jug, and then you fill it
with lukewarm water. (For those unfamiliar
with the metric system, a liter is about 32
gallons). Then you have to drink the whole
jug. This takes about an hour, because
MoviPrep tastes - and here I am being kind -
like a mixture of goat spit and urinal
cleanser, with just a hint of lemon.
The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly
written by somebody with a great sense of
humor, state that after you drink it, 'a loose,
watery bowel movement may result.'
This is kind of like saying that after you
jump off your roof, you may experience
contact with the ground.
MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want
to be too graphic, here, but, have you ever
seen a space-shuttle launch? This is pretty
much the MoviPrep experience, with you as
the shuttle. There are times when you wish
the commode had a seat belt. You spend
several hours pretty much confined to the
bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate
everything. And then, when you figure you
must be totally empty, you have to drink
another liter of MoviPrep, at which point, as
far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the
future and start eliminating food that you
have not even eaten yet.
After an action-packed evening, I finally
got to sleep.
The next morning my wife drove me to the
clinic. I was very nervous. Not only was I
worried about the procedure, but I had been
experiencing occasional return bouts of
MoviPrep spurtage. I was thinking, 'What if
I spurt on Andy?' How do you apologize to
a friend for something like that? Flowers
would not be enough.
At the clinic I had to sign many forms
acknowledging that I understood and totally
agreed with whatever the heck the forms
said. Then they led me to a room full of

other colonoscopy people, where I went
inside a little curtained space and took off
my clothes and put on one of those hospital
garments designed by sadist perverts, the
kind that, when you put it on, makes you
feel even more naked than when you are
actually naked.
Then a nurse named Eddie put a little needle
in a vein in my left hand. Ordinarily I
would have fainted, but Eddie was very
good, and I was already lying down. Eddie
also told me that some people put vodka in
their MoviPrep..
At first I was ticked off that I hadn't thought
of this, but then I pondered what would
happen, if you got yourself too tipsy to make
it to the bathroom, so you were staggering
around in full Fire Hose Mode. You would
have no choice but to burn your house.
When everything was ready, Eddie wheeled
me into the procedure room, where Andy
was waiting with a nurse and an
anesthesiologist. I did not see the 17,000foot
tube, but I knew Andy had it hidden
around there somewhere. I was seriously
nervous at this point.
Andy had me roll over on my left side, and
the anesthesiologist began hooking
something up to the needle in my hand.
There was music playing in the room, and I
realized that the song was 'Dancing Queen'
by ABBA. I remarked to Andy that, of all
the songs that could be playing during this
particular procedure, 'Dancing Queen' had to
be the least appropriate.
'You want me to turn it up?' said Andy,
from somewhere behind me.
'Ha ha,' I said. And then it was time, the
moment I had been dreading for more than a
decade. If you are squeamish, prepare
yourself, because I am going to tell you, in
explicit detail, exactly what it was like..
I have no idea. Really. I slept through it.
One moment, ABBA was yelling 'Dancing
Queen, feel the beat of the tambourine,' and
the next moment, I was back in the other
room, waking up in a very mellow mood.
Andy was looking down at me and asking
me how I felt. I felt excellent. I felt even
more excellent when Andy told me that it
was all over, and that my colon had passed
with flying colors. I have never been
prouder of an internal organ.
On the subject of Colonoscopies...
Colonoscopies are no joke, but these
comments during the exam were quite
humorous..... A physician claimed that the
following are actual comments made by his
patients (predominately male) while he was
performing their colonoscopies:
1. 'Take it easy, Doc. You're boldly going
where no man has gone before!'
2. 'Find Amelia Earhart yet?'
3. 'Can you hear me NOW?'
4. 'Are we there yet? Are we there yet?
Are we there yet?'
5. 'You know, in Arkansas , we're now
legally married.'
6. 'Any sign of the trapped miners, Chief?'
7. 'You put your left hand in, you take
your left hand out...'
8. 'Hey! Now I know how a Muppet feels!'
9. 'If your hand doesn't fit, you must quit!'
10. 'Hey Doc, let me know if you find my
dignity.'
11. 'You used to be an executive at Enron,
didn't you?'
12. 'God, now I know why I am not gay.'
13. And the best one of all:
'could you write a note for my wife
saying that my head is not up there?'

1. This message comes from Diane and Mike Hayes. They are getting ready to
attend their grandson’s wedding on August 10 th . They are concerned about
the heat, considering that it has been triple digits for some time.
2. It sounds like Bob and Peggy Cook are very busy with a fun summer. They
are headubg ti Canada next week in their hotrod for the Deuce Days event
that is held every three years. There will be approximately 19 other hot rods.
After the event, they will be taking a five or six day rip through Idaho and
Yellowstone or watever suits heir fancy. When they arrive back home in
Fresno, they will pack up again and head for their home in Bass Lake where
they will stay for the month of August. This is something that they have
never sone before and are very excited.
3. And now news from Skip Severance – It seems he and Leigh Ann are in
Oregon on the Columbia River with 60 other Miatas. Did I say
Miatas??????? Skip goes on to say they have been driving with the top down
almost the whole trip. Has the 2014 Corvette been replaced by the Miata???
Give me a break!
4. And now from Patricia Garrahan: Patrici says her daughter’s friend was to
Costa Rica with her. Although she had paid for most of the trip, she changes
her mind about going. Soooo, here coms Mom Patricia. Patricia paid the
difference of cost for the trip and she and Heidi will be off to Costa Rica on
the 19 th of July. They are going to the Sanctuary on Two Rivers….A yoga
retreat complete with vegan food, waterfalls, glorious beaches, jungle hiking,
river walking, a tree house for their accommodations and jungle shower.
They will fly into San Jose (the capital of Costa Rica) and drive overland ina
bus through overgrown jungle roads and cross the bay on a ferry to get
there. They are flying on a re-eye there and back. What was she thinking?
Patricia asked us to take care of Patrick while she is gone.
5. And finally, while on our run to Solvang, we had lunch in Pismo where
Tavares jojined us. It was so good to see him. Rick should know that we love
him and miss him so much!
Jan

y Keith Cornett on June 30, 2013
In the early 1950′s, Harley Earl, GM’s head of styling, envisioned a low-cost American sports
car that could compete with Europe’s Jaguar, MG and Ferrari. Codenamed “Opel”, the very first
prototype made its debut in January 1953 at the GM Motorama show at the Waldorf-Astoria
Hotel in New York City.
The great reviews and pubic acclaim for the little white roadster prompted GM to fast track the
Corvette into production. Sixty years ago today on June 30, 1953, the world’s first production
Corvette rolled off its Flint, Michigan assembly line.
Chevrolet built 300 Corvettes over the course of the 1953 model year. A uniform design
allowed the workers to concentrate on putting the bodies together without being distracted by
trim and equipment variations. Therefore, all 1953 Corvettes were Polo White with Sportsman
Red interiors and equipped with a canvas soft-top, 6.70 x 15 whitewall tires and a Delco signalseeking
radio. Also standard was a 5,000-rpm tachometer and a counter for total engine
revolutions.
Underneath the fiberglass were standard Chevrolet components. The 250 cubic inch Blue Flame
Special 6-cylinder engine came from the truck line while the two-speed Power glide automatic

transmission and drum brakes were also found on various Chevrolet passenger cars. A triple-carb
intake on the Corvette gave the 2-seater a bit more power but overall performance was lacking.
Although some sports car purists took exception to the Corvette’s only available transmission –
the 2-speed Power glide automatic, the Corvette was still a decent sports car with well-tuned
examples running 0-60 mph in 11 seconds and having a top speed near 105 mph.
The Corvette’s original base price was set at $3,498.00. However the general public was hard
pressed to get one as most of the production was doled out to project engineers, GM executives
and other high profile customers including Hollywood movie stars like John Wayne. In fact a
dealer notice issued in July ’53 from the Central Office proclaimed: “No dealer is in a position to
accept firm orders for delivery of a Corvette in 1953.”
Today, the 1953 Corvette remains one of the most sought after Corvette models of collectors.
Proof that some cars do indeed improve with age!

Friday morning 6 Corvettes and 12 people left Fresno looking for some cooler weather and some
fun. Our first stop was in wonderful Oceano where we met Rick Tavares for lunch. We found the
cool weather, good food at the Rock & Roll Diner, and it was great to visit with Rick. We soaked
up as much cool weather as we could, and headed to Buellton. We checked in the Hotel, rested a
little, and headed to the Chumash Casino. I won $20 but still not enough for the Alaska trip. (I
keep trying) Del was the big winner and came home $65 richer. Dinner was on our own and
Judy, Kim, Charlie, and I played some dominos. I was the winner!
Saturday morning our golfers Gary & Jan and Del & Susan played golf at a beautiful golf course.
Sometime you need to ask them about their bet. By the way, the men won the bet. I wonder if
they have collected yet. The rest of our group met the San Luis Obispo Corvette Club members
for breakfast in Buellton. We were happy Allyn & Marilyn Goodall were able to join us too.
After breakfast Carlos & Sherry Vivas from SLO led us to the Silver Quick Miniature horse
farm, Cold Springs Tavern, (an old stagecoach stop) and then back to Solvang. It was wonderful
working with Carlos & Sherry to coordinate this run. All their members attending were really
friendly and we look forward to getting together again. Thanks to Carlos & Sherry for all their
help.
Judy & Gordon and Chuck & I went on a tour of Santa Ines Mission and everyone else went
shopping. Dinner was very good at A.J. Spurs and we were tired from the day’s events and went
back to the Hotel. There’s a rumor going around that someone went skinny dipping but we don’t
have proof or pictures yet. (Ha Ha)
Sunday morning as we were to leave for home, our corvette (Chuck & Linda) wouldn’t start.
Gary came to the rescue with jumper cables and got us on the way. Chuck went on Tuesday and
got a new battery. Now we are ready for the next run. The Capurros & we want to thank all who
attended the run. We hope you all had a good time and it was fun getting to know Del & Susan.
We welcome you to the club.
See you soon,
