Is The Post Office Meeting
A Waste Of Your Time?
Will the Cities of Blue Rapids and Waterville end up with only Postal Service in mail boxes or will they become just another
Rural Carriers stop in a long day? And the Special Delivery Letter will require Blue Rapids and Waterville to drive to
Marysville to receive that Special Delivery?
Editorial
By Jon A. Brake
The Blue Rapids Post Office
is holding a meeting on March
28th at the Blue Rapids
Community Building at 1:00
p.m. to help decide what level
of mail service Blue Rapids
will receive in the future.
Our first thought was, it is a
waste of time. Do you think the
decision makers in the Postal
Department in Washington
really care what the people of
Blue Rapids, Ks think? They
don’t, they know what they are
going to do and the meetings
By Jon A. Brake
Boy, I will never do that
again. I was watching TV one
night and one of those infocomurshals
came on and it
sounded good. “Tell you what
we are going to do, you can
have open heart surgery and we
will give you a great deal.”
Sounds good. Then the pitchman
went on to say, “But, wait
if you call right now we will
give you two surgeries for the
price on one and all you have to
pay is for the extra stitches.” I
couldn't get to the phone fast
enough.
On February 4th I walked
into the Lincoln Heart Institute
5:00 a.m. At 8:00 a.m. I was in
the operating room.
First of all for all of those
people that have said that I didn't
have a heart, you were
wrong. They found it.
Not only did they find it,
they cut it open and then they
cut out the aortic valve and
replaced it with something they
called a “tissue valve”. It is
made from some part of a cow.
I had to be there at 5:00 a.m. I
don’t know what time the cow
had to be there.
Anyway, under two hours
later I was back in my room.
Open heart surgery and it didn’t
are a show. Later when
Congress wants to know why
the Postal Department is doing
this they will say “We held
meetings with each town and
this is what they wanted.”
Now, we normally would say
“don’t go” but we have had
good luck in this area in getting
governments to change their
minds.
The Riley County
Commission four or five years
ago were told by the State of
Kansas that the State would
give them the money to pave a
Al Simmons Coming
To Marshall County
He’s described as a creative
genius with the soul of a vaudevillian,
a one-man cast of thousands,
and a wizard of one-liners.
He’s Al Simmons.
The Marshall County Arts
Cooperative is bringing multiple
Juno-award winner, Al
Simmons, to Marshall County
for a week-long residency.
Simmons is a veteran of
one-man, multi-prop and costume,
music-filled, educational
family performances. Simmons
combines comedy with
song, dance, magic, and sightgags.
The end result is a oneman
variety show full of oldfashioned
good-natured fun.
Simmons will give a public
performance Tuesday, March
26, at 7:00 p.m. at the
Waterville Opera House. He
will perform “Figaro’s Close
Shave: The Barber of Seville;”
admission is free.
Simmons translated and condensed
Gioachino Rossini’s
opera, “The Barber of Seville,”
into a 45-minute comical look
at love, greed, deceit, and close
shaves. Simmons plays all of
the roles in the comic operetta
which was originally commissioned
for the Manitoba Opera.
The characters include Rosina
who is in love with the Count
who is pretending to be someone
else. Plus, there’s Figaro,
the jack-of-all trades barber,
who is having a bad hair day.
“I think this is going to be
pretty silly,” said Brian Cook, a
board member for the arts
cooperative. “This performance
is perfect for people who
like opera, but it’s also ideal for
those who know nothing about
opera. You might say this is a
fun introduction to opera!”
That’s The Brakes: Watch What You Buy On TV
Jon A. Brake
That’s The Brakes
take two hours!
Oh, and for those who have
said I was hard hearted. You
were right. the valve that they
replaced was starting to harden.
I’ll give you the technical
description of the problem like
they told me. The valve is
round like a pie cut in three
pieces. Apparently at birth my
three pieces was cut down to
two when two grew together.
Before going in I knew this
was only going to keep me
down for three or four days.
But, that didn’t happen.
Linda and I drove home
eight days later and I started
recovery. I knew that each day I
County Road around the
Bridge Replacement over
Fancy Creek. Riley County did
not want to maintain the road
after the Bridge was replaced
so they turned the money
down.
Citizens in the Randolph
area held a meeting with the
Commissions and a very large
crowd turned out. Within 15minutes
of the opening bell the
Commissioners changed their
vote and we were all glade they
did. That trip around the Bridge
would have been made by most
people with pavement and it
would not have been safe.
Three years ago right here in
Blue Rapids people turned out
was getting better. Well, almost
everything was getting better.
By Thursday of that week I
looked like the Pillsbury
Dough Boy.
My jeans were six inches
from being buttoned. I wore
sports warm ups to see the
Nurse Practitioner. She didn’t
like what she saw and sent me
to the Marysville Hospital.
On February 16th I had a
second operation. This was to
remove scaring from a 1957
operation to remove my appendix.
Apparently the old scare
had continued to grow and was
blocking everything.
I’ve been home for three
weeks and I am getting
stronger every day. At first
Linda was running her legs off
getting me this and getting me
that. She earned her keep,
believe me.
Now for the Thank You’s.
I want to thank Cheri at the
Blue Rapids Clinic for keeping
after me for months and
months to get more tests to find
out what was wrong. Cheri and
Dr. Duensing were on the same
page in getting this taken care
of.
All of the people at the
Nebraska Heart Institute and
the Community Memorial
for a meeting with the State of
Kansas about building a new
bridge over the Blue River. The
State wanted to place the new
bridge on the inside (or
Northwest) side of the old
bridge. The curve on the old
bridge was bad and placing the
new bridge on the inside would
have had it very dangerous.
The State changed their minds
and we have a beautiful bridge
with a very wide curve from
both directions.
We need a big turnout on
Thursday, March 28th at 1:00
at the Community Building.
The idea is to tell the Postal
Department we do not want the
hours cut in any way.
Hospital were outstanding. It
would be nice if both cooks
could learn another dish
besides Jello.
In the office Deb Barrington
and Linda took over to see that
four issues of the Manhattan
Free Press and the Blue Rapids
Free Press were out on time.
And they did this with computers
and e-mails going down
almost every day.
Son Ben and Tonya Ricklefs
continued to do the K-State
sports for both papers. They
drove the photos to Junction
City each week.
The Junction City Daily
Union and Jacob Keen took
The sixth and final program
for the Blue Rapids Museum’s
Way We Worked project will be
Saturday, March 16 at 2:00 at
the museum. Trailer manufacturing
is a major business in
Blue Rapids and Waterville and
a presentation by Titan Trailers
and Sharp Manufacturing will
pay tribute to their influence in
our workplace. Information on
over the layout of both papers.
Originally we ask them to publish
two weeks for us but it
ended up being four. The
papers looked good and as
always the color was right on.
And then there are the people
in Blue Rapids, Waterville and
Manhattan that came out of the
woodwork to wish me luck and
a speedy recovery. What helped
a lot were the many people who
would and say “I had that operation”.
It helped knowing that
many, many people had the
same operation and many had
more problems than what I had.
I am getting stronger. Last
week I felt so good that I spent
nal trailer company will be
The photo display from the
Way We Worked project will be
removed from the walls about
March 22 so the museum can
proceed with room renovation.
between 6:00-8:00 pm or
Saturday 9-12:00 or during the
trailer manufacturing program
In addition to the public performance,
Simmons will perform
for elementary students
throughout the county. He will
perform a one-man show that
incorporates music and science
into a piece he calls “Sounds
Crazy: The Science of Music.”
The show is designed to broaden
the students’ understanding
of music by explaining pitch,
beat, tempo, rhythm, and
dynamics. The show also
explains the principles of sound
waves, vibrations, and resonance.
“This excites me,” said
Jenny Thayer-Wood, a science
teacher at Marysville Junior
High School and board member
for the arts cooperative. “I
like the fact that we’re bringing
an artist to not only talk about
art, but to also talk about scientific
concepts and principles.
This is a great way to expose
students to the arts within a
content area. I like the integration
of the two.”
Simmons has been in the
entertainment business since
1970. He and his wife Barbara
live near the small Manitoba
town of Anola. They have three
sons, Karl, Will, and Brad, and
two granddaughters, Ashley
and Kaitlin. Their home, built
around two train cars, is
equipped with a fire-pole that
connects an upstairs shop with
a main-floor playroom lined
with mattresses and filled with
pillows. Their 15-acre yard is
flowered with zip lines, Tarzan
ropes, slides and swings.
For more information about
Simmons’ visit, people may
contact Wayne Kruse, the arts
cooperative’s executive director,
at 785-713-2077.
12 hours in the office on
Wednesday getting out the two
papers. All I could do on
Thursday was sleep. Didn’t get
out of the house. I may not
have been as strong as I
thought.
This week I have been doing
a little at a time and trying to
pace myself.
I can say this: I am glad I had
the operations because I know
that without them my time on
this earth was numbered.
I can also tell you this, I’m
not going to buy anything on
TV again.
The Final Program For Way We Worked
tos. Call Parker’s at 363 7228
or 363 7949 for seeing it at
another time.
Last week’s program on
History through Flour Sacks by
Nancy Jo Leachman was well
attended and enjoyed.
Leachman thanked us saying,
“I thought Saturday was wonderful.
It was one of my very
best experiences in the 46 times
I gave the program.”

Students To Learn
Body Venture
An innovative new way to
learn about the importance of
good nutrition and physical fitness
is coming to students at
Valley Heights Elementary
School! On March 26th the
Body Venture exhibit will visit
the school. Students will have
the opportunity to explore the
human body with Power
Panther, The USDA Food and
Nutrition Service mascot as
their guide.
The tour begins when students,
in groups of eight to ten,
enter the school lunchroom and
become a food such as a carrot,
low-fat milk or a piece of
chicken. In the second station,
they walk through a giant ear
into the brain. Inside the huge
brain dome, students experience
“brain waves” and learn
about brain function. The
“foods” step into the exhibit’s
larger-than-life mouth, are
“swallowed” through the
esophagus tunnel and move
into the stomach dome. From
the stomach, the students travel
through the small intestine
where they are “absorbed” into
the blood. Then they follow
the path of the nutrients to the
heart, lungs, bones, muscles
and skin stations.
Students leave the body
through a cut in the skin and
proceed through Power
Panther’s Pathway to Life.
This final station recaps key
health concepts from each of
the ten previous stations.
Throughout the exhibit, students
will learn how to apply
Power Panther’s slogan, EAT
SMART. PLAY HARD. At
each of Body Venture’s eleven
stations, a volunteer presenter
engages the students in a fiveminute
activity focused on
healthy choices.
The traveling Body Venture
exhibit was developed and is
operated by Child Nutrition
&Wellness, Kansas State
Department of Education.
Cheryl Johnson, Director of
Child Nutrition & Wellness
said, “Body Venture provides a
unique and exciting opportunity
for Kansas elementary students
to learn about their bodies
and the importance of making
healthy choices. “
Gators
According to Kathy Thompson,
Body Venture Coordinator, the
exhibit was developed to
address increasing national
concerns about the lack of
physical activity and the
declining nutritional status of
young children.
Venture, contact Crystal
