This grant will provide funding for Valley Heights students, Kindergarten through 6th grades, to attend an eight week summer program. News Blue Rapids Free Press - Thursday, January 19, 2012 3A News Kelsey Osborne Weds Megan Chaffee Megan Chaffee and Kelsey Osborne were married September 10, 2011 at First Covenant Church, Salina. The ceremony was officiated by Pastor Doug McHenry. The bride's parents are Mark and Barb Chaffee of Salina and the grooms parents are Jim and Shelli Osborne of Blue Rapids. Grandparents of the groom are Donald and Roberta Osborne and Irma Lupher, of Blue Rapids and the late Kelly Lupher. The bride's grandparents are Harold Chaffee of Lincoln, NE and the late Wilma Jean Chaffee and Marvin and Mildred Pickel. Erica Ring, friend of the bride was maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Dani Wiesen, friend of the bride; Sara Chaffee, sister of the bride; and Samantha Osborne, sister of the groom. Best man was Cody Osborne, brother of the groom. Groomsmen were Jerred Snyder, friend of the groom; Ryan Bishop, friend of the groom; and Dan Swearingen, friend of the groom. Seeing a dog grow and learn is one of the benefits of taking the dog project in 4-H. Today we’ll learn about a group of people involved with the 4- H dog project who not only developed their dogs, they helped develop a new service which is now benefitting hundreds of people with disabilities. Glenda Keller is a long-time K-State Research and Extension agent in Washington County. She explained that, in the 1980s, she had 4-H members in the dog project who were raising puppies for out-ofstate guide dog services. As the 4-Hers tracked where those dogs went, they found that virtually none of the dogs were being placed in the Midwest. The dogs were being shipped to the populated areas on the east and west coast. So, 4-H leaders and others in Washington County wanted to set up a service through which dogs could be trained to serve people with disabilities in the central section of the country. All Your Ag Needs The ring bearers/flower boys were Cooper and Caden Purcell, cousins of the bride. The candle lighters were Megan Ortega and Chelsea Weber, cousins of the groom. Ushers were Hubert, Trenton and Ryan Tiemeyer, cousins of the groom. Scripture was read by Kristal Baumgartner, friend of the couple. The pianist was Coleen Warkentin and the vocalist was Sara Chaffee, sister of the bride. Following the ceremony a reception, dinner and dance was held at the Salina Country Club. The reception hosts and hostesses were Tom and Phyllis Pickel, uncle and aunt of the bride; and Ken, Debbie, Kendra, Kylie and Kayla Hanson, friends of the bride. The groom is a graduate of Kansas State University-Salina. He is a pilot for Seaport Airlines. The bride is a graduate of Kansas State University. She works in the customer service department at Seaport Airlines. They are at home in Memphis, TN. In 1990, these leaders organized the Kansas Specialty Dog Service, also known as KSDS Inc. It was established in the county seat: the rural community of Washington, population 1,197 people. Now, that’s rural. A former restaurant building in Washington was available. It became the dog training center with a canine housing unit next door. Local volunteers set out to train dogs to assist people who are blind or otherwise handicapped. KSDS now offers three separate programs: Guide dogs to help the visually impaired, service dogs to help those who are physically impaired, and social dogs which are utilized in medical settings, by educational facilities, and by social work professionals. The primary breeds of dogs used in this service are yellow and black Labrador retrievers and golden retrievers. Most of the dogs are born and bred in Washington County, and then placed with puppy raisers across 17 states. The puppy raisers care for the dogs from the age of eight weeks to 18 or 20 weeks, at which point the dogs come back to Washington. If a dog should not meet the standard for some reason, the puppy raisers get first choice to acquire the dog. If the puppy raiser declines, there is a waiting list of others who are interested in the dogs. But those dogs that do pass are slated for a rewarding career as an assistance dog. KSDS trainers evaluate what type of service work the dog is best suited for, and what type of training would be most appropriate for them. Meanwhile, KSDS receives applications from individuals who have a need for a service dog trained for special needs. In order to help understand the type of setting in which the dog will work, applicants might be asked to send in a video of their home and surroundings. KSDS will evaluate the physical demands and type of assistance needed, and then try to find the ideal match of the person and the dog. When the dog is two years old, it will be matched and placed with a person. Remarkably, this service is free of charge to the recipients. Megan and Kelsey Osborne “The Benders” Come To Waterville The Waterville Opera House and the Weaver Hotel will team up on Saturday, February 11, 2012 to provide an evening of dining enjoyment and entertainment in Waterville, Kansas. There will be a Valentine’s Dinner, followed with a performance by the “The Benders” a 50s& 60s Rock Band from Wichita, Kansas, Drummer and vocalist Byron Brewer first fronted "The Benders" on Oct. 28, 1985. Coincidently, that was also the time of his most recent haircut. As the leader of "The Benders" Byron often claims that his hair is more popular than he is. Joining Byron in the fourman group that produces melodius 50s and 60s show tunes are saxophonist / vocalist Kevin May, guitarist / vocalist Johnny Cruz fresh from a 4 year vacation, and Bassist Larry "Campy" Campanello. May, who has been playing both guitar and saxophone for over 40 years, grew up in Wichita and attended Wichita State University, where he studied music, May went on to teach at Wichita State before joining "The Benders in 1990. In 1998, May left "The Benders" for a gig with the internationally acclaimed group "Roomful of blues." As a member of that group, May was able to perform with artists such as Ray Charles, Ike Turner, and The Blues Brothers Band. A desire to raise his family in the Wichita brought Kevin back to the Midwest in 1999, and he re-joined "The Benders" in 2003. Guitarist Cruz is a Law enforcement officer when not rocking and after a 4 year retirement brings back to the stage his polished vocal and guitar skills. Rounding out The Benders is Bassist Larry "Campy" Campanello. Recently re-joining the band after a two year "vacation " Campy brings his unique bass, vocal and fashion flare to the band in addition to the often imitated but never duplicated "Campy Shuffle" One of the most common questions besides "Is that your real hair?" is how the group gets its name, "The Benders". This is a question, the group says, that has a combination of answers, one gruesome and one logical. The unique answer to that question is that one day when looking for a group name, the men stumbled across a newspaper clipping that told of a family in Southeastern Kansas with the last name of Benders. As the story goes, the Benders family set up a restaurant and were suspected of murdering some of their diners. Making a long story short, the men combined the fact that many of the great bands from the 1950s used the naming format of "The _______," and the story they found about the Benders in the mid-nineteenth century, to come up with the benders. Glenda Keller, now retired from K-State Research and Extension, is vice president of the KSDS Board of Directors. “We’ve defied all odds to be successful here,” Glenda said. “There were a lot of naysayers when we got started. But these dogs are changing the lives of the people they work with. It’s almost a miracle,” she said. It’s fun watching a puppy grow. It can be rewarding to see a dog grow and develop, as we experienced in the 4-H dog project. Glenda Keller and other 4-H leaders have made a difference by helping their 4- Hers and their dogs to grow, and by helping the Kansas Specialty Dog Service to grow as well. And there’s more.
