News Blue Rapids Free Press - Thursday, June 2, 2011 News Resident of the Month - Lucile Pralle I was born November 15, 1912, on the family farm 1 ½ miles from Bremen. My parents were Fred and Hermine Crome Pralle. I had one brother, Alfred Pralle and one sister Veronica Pralle. I was the youngest child. We did the usual farm chores. We gathered eggs and milked cows. Mother raised geese also and I can still recall how I was afraid of the ganders. They would put their heads down and chase me around the yard. We had a lot of cats and dogs as pets on the farm. They were always outside pets keeping the rats and mice population down. I liked the dogs best. Christmas was always very special. The whole family went to the Christmas Eve Services. When we returned Santa would have been there and our gifts were under the candle lit Christmas tree. A true Christmas miracle! I remember when we got our first car in 1918. It was a Chevrolet. That was a real highlight in my life. We ate a LOT of cornbread during WWI, due to the shortage of flour. To this day I do not like cornbread. I went to grade school at Bremen Parochial School. It was a one room school and at times we had as many as 40 children who attended school there.
