“BE PREPARED BEFORE
THE STORM HITS”
Daily we hear about all the
devastation from the spring
storms. Many of the storm victims
aren’t worried about their
homes because they have
homeowners insurance.
Unfortunately, when these victims
have filed their claims,
some were denied. Their
homes sit in ruin because the
lack of funds to rebuild.
Here in Kansas the possibility
of severe storms does exist.
Living in the Midwest brings
with it the threat of damaging
wind, pelting hail, ice storms,
or roaring flood water, causing
hundreds of millions of dollars
in damage to property across
the region.
Unfortunately it isn’t until
that devastation has occurs that
we start to realize what our
homeowners insurance policy
really covers. So it is important
to take time to read the “fine
print” of your insurance policy
to find out, so when you
become a victim of the storm
you will know what will and
what won’t be covered.
Your first priority should be
to protect your family and your
Horse Owners Urged to
Watch for Signs of Equine Virus
By Michael Vogt
County Extension Agent
In our area we have many
horse owners and we are entering
a time of year when horse
owners participate in trail rides,
horse shows, rodeos, and other
horse events.
Recently, we were made
aware of a contagious virus
affecting horses that horse
owners and trainers need to be
aware
The warning follows an outbreak
of equine herpesvirus
myeloencephalopathy at a
competition in Utah April 29-
May 8, in which horses from
other states competed. Since
then, the virus appears to have
spread to several other states,
according to a Kansas State
University veterinarian.
As of May 18, a total of 14
confirmed or suspected cases
have been reported in the
United States, including five
deaths. The states reporting
confirmed or suspected cases
by that date included
California, Colorado, Idaho,
New Mexico (suspected), Utah
(suspected), Washington, and
Alberta, Canada.
two wheat plots for wheat producers
to tour.
The first tour will be the
Marshall County Wheat Plot
Tour, which will be held on
Wednesday, June 8. The tour
Axtell on 30th Road.
There will be 13 wheat varieties
and blends to see at the
tour. We have several newer
wheat varieties we are testing,
property. You should also
guard against any adverse
financial consequences of the
disaster if possible.
Insurance offers financial
protection against storm damage,
but you need the proper
insurance in the right amounts
to protect against property loss.
Many times consumers fail to
make proper insurance arrangements
for themselves or their
property before a storm hits.
The important thing is to
begin planning now – before
the storms hit.
How do you know if you
have the right home
owner’s/renters insurance?
Homeowners/Renters
Check your coverage. Not
all policies cover expenses
such as water and windstorm
damage, debris or tree removal,
sewer back-up due to flooding
or sump pump failure, or additional
living expenses if disaster
forces you from your home.
Check limits, including contents’
coverage.
The minimum recommendation
for homeowners is full
replacement or replacement
cost coverage. This means the
structure can be replaced up to
the limit specified in the policy.
Use current appraised value to
be sure the policy reflects the
There have been no confirmed
or suspected cases
reported in Kansas so far (as of
May 18), said Beth Davis,
associate professor of clinical
sciences in K-State’s College of
Veterinary Medicine.
“Equine herpesvirus 1, or
EHV-1, is one of a large group
of DNA viruses causing potentially
serious disease in horses
and other species,” Davis said.
“EHV-1 can cause different
forms of disease, including
abortion in mares, respiratory
infection and neurological
symptoms. The most recent
outbreaks have involved the
EHV-1 respiratory/neurological
form of the virus, or equine
herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy
(EHM).”
The virus is contagious and
is spread by direct horse-tohorse
contact, but also by contaminated
hands, equipment
and tack, said Davis, who
serves as K-State’s section head
for equine medicine and surgery.
The virus also can spread
for a short time through the air
within the stall and stable environment.
Horses infected with the
AgriPro's CJ, and Westbred's
Cedar and Stout. As well as
popular wheat varieties such as
Westbred's Santa Fe, Fuller,
AgriPro's Art, and wheat
blends.
Following the tour, there will
be a supper served by the Axtell
Busy Bees 4-H Club.
The second tour will be
Chris Bargmann's 4-H Plot,
which will be held on Friday,
June 10. The tour will begin at
real replacement cost and
update the policy to include
any home improvements or
remodeling that has been done.
Become familiar with the
deductibles on your policy.
Buying replacement cost on
possessions is very important.
A standard policy only pays for
the depreciated value, not what
it would cost you to replace the
item at today’s prices. Use a
home inventory to make sure
you have adequate coverage to
cover the value of your property.
If you rent, you should buy
renter’s insurance that pays for
damaged, destroyed, or stolen
personal property. The landlord’s
insurance won’t cover
damage to or loss of your possessions.
Special coverage may be
needed for floods, earthquakes,
home offices, specific jewelry,
collectibles, artwork, furs, or
other high dollar items. Ask
your insurance agent about this
additional coverage.
It is essential that you update
your inventory at least annually.
Photograph and videotape
each room and the exterior of
your home. List model and
serial numbers and attach sales
receipts. Be sure to include
items in the basement or attic.
neurologic strain of EHV-1
might have a fever as well as
nasal discharge, incoordination,
hind end weakness,
recumbency, lethargy, urine
dribbling and diminished tail
tone.
Currently there are no EHV-
1 vaccines that have been
proven to prevent against the
development of EHM, Davis
said. She recommends that
horse owners contact their local
veterinarian or the K-State
Large Animal Desk (785-532-
5700) to discuss potential vaccine
recommendations that
may be implemented to help
limit the severity of disease,
should their horse become
exposed to the virus.
“If horse owners notice that a
horse develops fever, respiratory
or neurological signs, they
should call us or their local veterinarian
and not move the
horse or horses in the immediate
area,” Davis said. “We are
also urging horse owners in this
Resident of the Month - Lucile Pralle
I was born November 15,
1912, on the family farm 1 ½
miles from Bremen. My parents
were Fred and Hermine
Crome Pralle. I had one brother,
Alfred Pralle and one sister
Veronica Pralle. I was the
youngest child.
We did the usual farm
chores. We gathered eggs and
milked cows. Mother raised
geese also and I can still recall
how I was afraid of the ganders.
They would put their
heads down and chase me
around the yard. We had a lot of
cats and dogs as pets on the
farm. They were always outside
pets keeping the rats and
mice population down. I liked
the dogs best.
Christmas was always very
special. The whole family went
to the Christmas Eve Services.
When we returned Santa would
have been there and our gifts
were under the candle lit
Christmas tree. A true
Christmas miracle!
I remember when we got our
first car in 1918. It was a
Chevrolet. That was a real
highlight in my life.
We ate a LOT of cornbread
during WWI, due to the shortage
of flour. To this day I do not
like cornbread.
I went to grade school at
Bremen Parochial School. It
was a one room school and at
times we had as many as 40
children who attended school
there. We had a lot of homework
because we only had one
teacher and he needed to get all
eight grades needs met so a lot
of time was not spent with individual
classes. We also had a
lot of memory work to learn,
Bible verses mostly. In the
eighth grade we took a county
written test to see if we were
ready to advance into high
school.
I graduated from Marysville
High School in 1931. I took
Normal Training to be a
teacher. After graduation the
students were tested by the
state of Kansas. If they passed
they were given a two year
teaching certificate and they
could teach school in rural
schools. After two years we had
to get eight hours of credit to
get another two year certificate.
When a teacher got 60 hours of
credits she could then teach in
the cities schools.
I attended summer sessions
