January 29, 2011 marks 150 years of statehood for Kansas. Kansas 150 is a grassroots effort among state agencies, communities and individuals across the state to educate Kansans about their heritage and commemorate the 150 milestone. The Marysville Mark and Barb Chaffee, of Salina, and Jim and Shelli Osborne, of Blue Rapids are pleased to announce the upcoming marriage of their children, Megan Chaffee and Kelsey Osborne. NEWS EWS Blue Rapids Free Press - Thursday, June 23, 2011 Marshall County Fair Association Holds Softball Tournament The Marshall County Fair Association will be hosting its 3rd annual Softball Tournament on July 9th, at the Blue Rapids Ball Fields. The Softball Tournament is a fundraiser to help preserve Floral Hall and other buildings at the Fairgrounds. Floral Hall is a Camp Exploration Summer is off to a blazing start and with the hot temperatures and storms so far this summer it has not dampened the success of Camp Exploration. There are over 40 kids this summer participating in Camp Exploration and with Early Childhood Learning, and Summer School. There is close to 80 kids this summer in activities at the Waterville Elementary School. The staff historic circular building on the East side of the Fairgrounds. The building is infested with termites and it is essential that it is treated to eliminate termites. This is a very costly project and due to budget cuts to the Fair Association, and we cannot fund the treatment of which is made up of Valley Heights school teachers, students, and former students have worked really hard putting together a great program. The kids are doing something different every hour of each day and are doing things from tshirt making to learning how to cook. There will be a full concession stand throughout the entire tournament, sponsored by the Marshall County Fair Association. The start and end times of the tournament will depend on the amount of teams that are registered. The cost per team is be able to do at home. Being this my first year running Camp Exploration it has had its challenges but seeing all the kids enjoying the experience really helps with the process of being the new guy. We have about three weeks left with summer programs, $125. Each team must have a minimum of 10 players and a maximum of 18 players, and players must be at least 15 years of age or older. The team roster and the entry fee is due to the Marshall County Fair Board Office or Katina Gros by July 6th, each team will need to and I know with the quality of our staff the rest of Camp Exploration, Early Childhood Learning, and Summer School will be awesome. Our theme for this summer is “Leave Your Prints on the World” and I think our kids and staff are doing a wonderful job of doing that. (Photo by Deb Barrington) Leaf Curl in Tomatoes By Michael Vogt County Extension Agent Every year I have calls from gardeners who have tomato plants with leaves that curl up. When tomato plants grow vigorously in mild, spring weather the top growth often exceeds the root development. When the first few days of warm, dry summer weather hit, the plant 'realizes' that it has a problem and needs to increase its root development. The plant tries to reduce its leaf area by rolling leaves. The leaves curl along the length of the leaf (leaflet) in an upward fashion. It is often accompanied by a thickening of the leaf giving it a leathery texture. Interestingly, leaf roll is worse on some varieties than others. Though rolling usually occurs during the spring to summer shift period, it may also occur after a heavy cultivating or hoeing, a hard rain, or any sudden change in weather. This leaf roll is a temporary condition that goes away after a week or so when the plant has a chance to acclimate, recover from injury, or the soil has a chance to dry out. There are diseases that cause tomato leaves to roll up. The two most common of those diseases are Fusarium and Verticillium Wilt in which the lower leaves roll up, wilt, and then die. As long as you plant tomato varieties/hybrids resistant to these diseases, then these two diseases should not be a problem. Look for tomato varieties that state VF resistance. I prefer to see on the tomato tag one more letter N. N is for nematode. So, look for VFN resistance. If your tomato plants are VFN resistant and the leaves curl, more than likely your tomatoes are experiencing tomato leaf roll.
