A Member of the EPTA group
helps Tesco with their Environmental Initiative
With improvements to refrigeration technology, the new Tesco Extra
hypermarket in Swansea is a leader in environmental advancement
Milan, April 2006 – This month sees the result of a new
joint initiative between Tesco, one of the largest retailers
in the world, and the EPTA group, the European leader in
commercial refrigeration. 10 April has seen the opening at
Swansea Llansamlet in Wales (UK) of a new Tesco Extra
hypermarket with an area of approx. 80,000 sq.ft. (of
which 36,000 sq.ft. is food and 44,500 sq.ft. is non-food).
This Extra hypermarket is particularly innovative because
it is designed to meet new ecological targets, and features
a combination of cutting-edge solutions. This initiative has
several carbon saving technologies installed, including
CO2 refrigeration. Examples of the refrigeration initiatives
are low energy fan motors, lighting tubes with 50%
consumption of standard tubes, and in other areas of the
store there is a combined Heat & Power plant, extensive use of natural light, and a large
bank of solar power panels that provides electricity for the store.
Costan – one of the major EPTA group’s brands - has also contributed to this revolutionary
project by supplying refrigeration plants that respect the environment and which are HFC-
free; in other words, they work without using hydrofluorocarbons. The design of Tesco’s
new Extra hypermarket is guided by the directives in the Kyoto protocol, the result being
the selection of transcritical CO2 technology (a thermodynamic refrigerating cycle that
exerts a pressure greater than the critical pressure beyond which the distinction between
liquid and gaseous states disappears).
Tesco has worked with Epta brands Bonnet Neve and Costan all over the world since the
1970s, and now want to widen their range of products and services with a new ecological

sensitivity that translates into important, concrete commitments: to replace HFC refrigerant
gasses, and to significantly reduce energy consumption.
With an overall investment of around 500,000 Euro, the installation at the Swansea Extra
hypermarket includes Proxima chilled display cabinets connected to a transcritical CO2
pack, and Ampleo frozen glass-door cabinets connected to a pack where CO2 and
Hydrocarbon operate in cascade. A total of 220 metres of refrigerated cabinet has been
installed. The benchmark energy efficiency of these cabinets allows them to be listed on the
Carbon Trust list of products that are eligible for Enhanced Capital Allowance tax benefits.
During the development of formats and technologies for Tesco, EPTA has closely supported
its customer. The installation and commissioning has been completed by the Epta UK
organisation, together with training, monitoring, and after-sales service
support.
"We are committed to playing our part in tackling climate change by
reducing our energy use and greenhouse emissions. These innovative plants
from the EPTA group help us reduce our dependence on Greenhouse Gas
refrigerants and save energy”…. says Tesco’s Andy Campbell – Refrigeration
Engineering Manager.
It is precisely this commitment to the environment that makes the partnership so
indispensable and fruitful, as John Austin-Davies, the project leader at the EPTA group,
confirms: “Today, transcritical CO2 technology is an integral part and the “jewel in the
crown” of the EPTA group’s product range. We’re very happy that the market is becoming
more and more receptive to our new products, which are part of a strategic development
designed to meet the most demanding needs of our customers. Respect for the
environment and innovation in research and development are part of the EPTA Group’s
DNA.”
Thanks to the new partnership with Tesco and several
other CO2 installations throughout Europe, EPTA group
has consolidated its knowledge and experience as a true
world leader in commercial refrigeration.

EPTA group, the leading European company in food refrigeration and supply of shelving for organised distribution,
has its roots in Italy, where in 1986 the Nocivelli family bought the Costan Refrigerazione company, the main
Italian brand in the sector with its headquarters in Limana, in the province of Belluno and in the Veneto region.
Over the years the Novicelli family’s great industrial plan was developed thanks to a strong policy of external
growth via the acquisition of leading European companies operating in the same sector.
The result is a multi-brand group and a strong international presence with a turnover of around 400 million euro,
an annual productive capacity of 100,000 units, 2,500 employees and a worldwide commercial presence.
In its current configuration, the EPTA group came into being in March 2003 following a complex process of
integration and reorganisation of seven different successful companies, each with a strong tradition and
consolidated position in its respective market: Costan Refrigerazione (Italy), Intercold (Austria), Bonnet Névé
(France), Costan Market (Argentina), BKT (Germany), Alser Innovation (France), and George Barker (UK).
