An Awarding Experience
BGN Logan Andrews, Awards Director
Well several awards have gone out since last issue and I want to send my congratulations to all
that earned them. And earn them they definitely did. All the awards are designed so that they are
not give aways. Even the Military Service award which is a (seemingly) lowly Chapter Level
award. You still have to serve time in one of the Armed Services in order to qualify, combat not required.
That is at that level so that the CO’s who are most likely to know of such service.
Over the course of the last couple of month, I have received many questions regarding the various
awards that are available for the members to earn. This month I’d thought I’d address them to
clear up some of the uncertainties. The web page will also be updated in the hopes of these questions
never needing to be asked again. But if you are ever in doubt feel free to contact me at
awards@maquis.com and I will answer any questions you might have.
How long do you have to be a member of MFI before you can earn an award?
Members may be presented with awards from the moment they sign on, such as with the Military
Service Ribbon. Obviously other ribbons will take time. The Convention and Community Service
Ribbons require so many hours before they are rewarded. International default is 50 hours but
since they are a Chapter Level ribbon CO’s may change that number higher or lower as they wish.
CO’s may also decide whether or not to allow hours from prior to joining the local club or not.
Can COs nominate to the ZCs for Unit of the Year and Rebel of the Year?
CO’s may nominate for Rebel of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. These are awards to individuals
and ZCs are unlikely to know of their achievements. As for Unit of the Year, it is up to the
ZC only to make their decision for their Zone and then that choice is forwarded to the Awards
Board for final selection for International Unit of the Year.
Do I have to outrank someone to nominate them?
Not necessarily but that will be the most likely. As a rule CO’s should be the one sending the
nomination to the Awards Board. Where that nomination comes from internally, is up to the Unit’s
individual policies. One may also be in a position to have someone under then that technically out
ranks them but because of their position, such as a FCPT ZC over a Vice ADM CO or a department
head over a staff member. So no there is not requirement that you outrank the person you
nominate, but chances are you will.
What if I want to nominate member of another cell, within my Zone, for say Rebel of the Year?
You most certainly can do so. Just send the write up for why you think they deserve the award to
the appropriate ZC. Since Departments are not limited to any one zone, any nominations for duties
completed within a Dept or SID are considered solely at the International level. Yes this
means that the Rebel of the Year may not be one of the Zone Rebels of the Year.
What if I want to nominate a Marine detachment for Unit of the Year but not the ship they are attached
to?
There may be some cases where the Marine detachment and the ship/station they are attached to
