Maquis Forces International
MFS NEBULA Anniversary
Once upon a time there were a handful of Starfleet members, consisting of
an XO, a CMO, a Quartermaster and a couple "Border Patrol" members,
who were happily meeting on their own to create a self running Computer
Roster and "Science Station" for their local Trek chapter. Whenever these
members where on their own creating, all was right with the world. Unfortunately,
the Ship's Captain, who was heavily into Role Playing, was constantly
getting our ship into trouble with Region 2, KAG and KLAW.
Our Captain had a loyal following,
who had no idea of what her Senior
Staff where enduring. As far as the
members knew, their Captain was
being unjustly persecuted by the
"other groups". After six months of
constantly bailing their Captain out
of trouble, it hit the band of Fun Seekers! "We have so much fun on our
own... Let's branch off and form OUR OWN shuttle!"
They needed 5 Starfleet members to qualify for Shuttle status. They were
only seeking to STAY a shuttle, consisting of only the rowdy little band of
Fun-Seekers, So... on November 11th, 1993, Gary & Judy Davis, Rob & Kim
Johnson and Ryan Rosal put their names and Starfleet ID numbers to a
piece of paper which would become their Declaration of Independence from
the USS Royal Sovereign, becoming the Shuttle Nebula! (Ta-Daaaa!!!)
(Funfair)
To the plucky little band's surprise, potential members started springing out
the woodwork! By the time the "Official Paperwork" returned from Shuttle H.
Q., their numbers had grown to 15, including Tom Donohoe and Laura Casey.
They promptly requested change to Runabout status (a new concept,
never proposed to SFI before), for they technically had too many members
to fit into a shuttle. Nebula was the 1st to be allowed this designation.
BADLANDS
Maquis Forces International is an alliance of Maquis clubs and individuals around the world for
the purpose of the free exchange of ideas, information, and friendship. Like our fictional counterparts
on Star Trek who went renegade from Starfleet, most of our membership left established
fandom organizations in search of a better banner to fly under. Our chapters left such
organizations feeling dissatisfied and not all together comfortable with the politics and infighting
that plague many fan organizations. MFI is much different. Being Maquis gives us the
freedom to act and play as we choose without an organization dictating how we run our chapters
and eliminates the need for politics. MFI is a breed apart from the standard Star Trek organization
in that we are here for fellowship and fun rather than politics and money.
From the Center Seat
Force Admiral Gary Davis - International Coordinator
Captain’s Log Stardate: 1212.03. I am not sure, but I think the
center seat here at Maquis Forces International is in sometime of
time warp! WHERE did the year 2003 go! I sit here looking over
my calendar and I just can’t believe that the year is nearly gone
and we will be entering 2004!
Where does the time go?! Christmas is JUST around the corner
and the holidays are in full swing. Thanksgiving came and went in
a blur and before I knew it was sitting outside of toy stores at 5am
with holiday sale ads clutched in my hands with nothing on my
mind but saving a few extra dollars to get the toys that my children
wished for so lovingly with those big sad puppy dog eyes. I
think that children have that talent genetically coded within their
DNA because no matter how young they are they always seem to
have it down to a science! I thought the Badlands was a tough
place to hang out, it pales now to standing outside these stores in
the freezing rain with 500 bargain hungry parents! The heck with
Jem'Hadar and Cardassians, give me a phaser to ward off the
lady next to me trying to beat me to those Bratz Dolls!
As we enter yet another year of prosperous fandom here at MFI, I’m reminded why we started
this all one day back in 1995 (That’s almost a DECADE ago… boy do I feel old). We started our
little renegade fan club to be different, to have fun, and to have a place safe from politics and
infighting that so many organizations are plagued with. I HOPE that I can honestly say that we
continue to abide by our founding charter and that MFI is proving to be just that organization as
we enter 2004. As the Coordinator for our many chapters and members, I feel humbled that I
have been allowed to serve as your chairperson down the years and look forward to serving at
your pleasure as long as you will have me. MFI has seen many changes; many faces come
and go (and some even return). The website has evolved, changed a little, been updated, and
has enjoyed this near decade run with uninterrupted online status (with the exception of a ONE
hour hiccup by our provider a few years back). An outstanding accomplishment itself for a website,
let alone a fan club website.
Members, Chapter Chairpersons, Zone Coordinators, Special Interest Group Department
Heads, Coordinator Council and Executive Council Staffs, and all the support staffs of these
various bodies, I SALUTE YOU. YOU make MFI possible; you put us on the map, and keep the
Maquis spirit alive. To all of you, A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS, and VERY PROSPEROUS
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Second Thoughts
Admiral Tom Donohoe - Vice Coordinator
Greetings Maquis,
BADLANDS
A lot of things have happened since our last newsletter. We
have a new Academy Commandant Samuel Cummings. He has
taken the reigns of the Academy and I look forward to great
things from him. The Academy automation is still being worked
on, if you have any concerns regarding any exams you have
taken or automation please drop Commodore Cummings or myself
a line.
Technology is a wonderful thing and these days I am amazed at
everything that has progressed so far in such a short period of
time. When I was a kid all phones had a cord, now there are cellular
phones. I was the remote control for our family television,
which wasn’t always a color TV, nor was it portable! If someone
said they were going to “nuke” a meal, someone blew a Civil Defense
Siren and everyone got under tables.
With all these advancements in the world it’s a shame that people
seem to change so slowly. There is discord in the Middle East.
Terrorists and their organizations are doing their best to disrupt the peaceful people of the world, not
only here in the USA, but everywhere in the world and even their own countrymen are not safe from
the evil they cause.
I for one am glad by the example that Maquis Forces International sets as an organization, we are a
diverse group of people from all over the world, and we get along and we are friends. We go to events
together and have fun. We give to the needy and help out the underprivileged.
I am proud to call myself Maquis and all of you my friends.

From Behind the Curtain
Admiral Rob Johnson - MFI Chief of Staff
Viruses, Adware & Spyware
Do you use a High Speed Internet connection? If so, do you run a firewall
program? If not, you should seriously consider using one. When
using High Speed (Cable, DSL, whatever), you're computer is online
with the internet Every Second it's turned on, whether you're checking
mail, surfing the web, Instant Messaging, or NOT. That's right...while
you think your computer is its screen-saver, patiently waiting for you
to give it a command, thousands of hackers have access to your files,
IF you're not running firewall software. It's kind of like leaving the back
door to your house open when you go to bed at night, letting all the
neighborhood critters ravage your kitchen.
Has your computer become "sluggish" lately? Does your computer
freeze up frequently? If you close down all your windows and hit
[CTRL][ALT][Delete], do you have more than 5 to 10 programs still
running in Task Manager? Chances are, you've picked up a few viruses,
pieces of spyware (files downloaded to your computer that
steal and broadcast your personal information) and adware (cookies &
temporary internet files that cause all those rotten pop-up windows and contribute to the consumption of
computer resources) along the way.
What? you say "There can't be anything like that on MY computer!! I run a virus scanner weekly!"?? I'm
sorry to say that Norton & Virus Shield by themselves can check for known viruses, but they're greatly behind
in the new kids on the block. If you belong to an ISP that offers Bop-Up Blocker, that does help, but
only to a point.
What can you do to protect yourself? One easy thing you can do is go into "Internet Options" either in
your Internet Explorer "Tools" section or from Control Panel and dump your "cookies" and "temporary
internet files" (even the "offline" files) regularly. Also, Spend A Few Bucks and upgrade your virus software
to the latest version of combination Virus Scan / Firewall packages. on top of this, take advantage of
Earthlink and some of the other big ISPs that have a free Spyware Scan program. If you go to http://www.
download.com and obtain a copy of "SpyBot Search & Destroy". It's free and not only does it scan for spyware
& adware, it will delete it. You can even set personal preferences to block selected adware.
A neat aspect of Goggle.com I wasn't aware of, is that you can actually use goggle to search for Error
Messages! Simply type in the error message and it will give you a list of sites that reference that error.
Why is that important to know? Many of the new viruses, worms, Trojan horses & more present themselves
as error messages.
Remember earlier I mentioned all those excess files running in Task Manager? If your computer is running
sluggish, close everything in task manager EXCEPT for "explorer", the file referencing your virus program
and "systray" to see if things perk up. If it does perk up, another thing you can do is weed out the
program called msconfig... But beware!!! Depending on the version of Windows you're running, there are
several files you DON'T want to delete from msconfig. If you want more info on msconfig, email me (or
possibly Will Robertson).
As most computer companies don't supply warrantee Tech Support for problems encountered by viruses,
this is truly an area where being for-warned is being for-armed.

Marine Forces Marine Corps
General Christina Doane - MFMC Commandant
BADLANDS
First order of business is to welcome Chris Ruzsa to the MFMC. He is
commissioned a 2Lieutentant by his Commanding Officer, Marine
Captain Paul Williams. This raises the Juno Beach to a Runabout
status, so congrats to the RN Juno Beach! And a very warm welcome
to its new Executive Officer, Chris. Welcome Aboard! For records
top_gunner13@hotmail.com is his email. The RN Juno Beach is located
in Zone 11 and is in the 6th Brigade for the MFMC.
Next Order is to note the website unit listing is updateable so if you
see anything wrong please let us know as what’s on the MFMC site is
what I provide to the Computer Ops department and other MFI entities
so its very important it remain as correct as possible.
Next is a “Help wanted”. In the Unit listings you will note blanks in our
set up, if this appeals to you all are welcomed to apply for any of
those postings. If you have an idea for a post that is not listed please
let us know and perhaps we can work on it. I am in personal need of a
yeoman. Mainly someone to help keep me organized, and must be
good with paperwork. May include duties for all of my MFI postings.
Comes with rank of Brevet 1Lt. for three months with confirmation or
promotion at the end of that time. This job is not for the faint of heart,
LOL. We’re also looking for a JAG Laision Officer and a Chief of the
Marine Air Corps. Please contact me if interested.
All Divisional and Brigade Officers are encouraged to contact their
Zone Coordinator to offer their services on zone staff officially or otherwise
as marine liaison officers to assist that Zone Coordinator as may be required. At the very least a
working relationship should be maintained to assist in better communication.
We do have a yahoo groups any marines, reserve marines, or marine supporters are welcome to join. If
interested please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/maquisforcesmarinecorps/ and don't forget to
check the file section, very interesting information about us there. Any member can suggest information
or links they want to see added.
Also if you wish to become a reporter for the marines to BADLANDS, simply write something up and
send it in. I can't possibly keep up with every little detail as much as I'd like to so please feel free to
write in, this is your club, your newsletter.
And as always my door is always open for questions, comments, concerns, etc. And just because the
MFI budget doesn't allow for me to have a door is entirely beside the point.

My dog, Ben, was nestled
Right next to the bed
While visions of doggie treats
Danced in his head.
And I in my PJ's
(The kind with the feet)
Had just settled down
For a real good night's sleep.
When over on the nightstand
There arose such a beeping
Can't say what I uttered
It would be full of bleeping.
Fast down the staircase
I stumbled in rage
Turned on the light
And looked at the page.
I picked up the phone
And called operations
He read me the messages
While I ran out of patience.
BADLANDS
Well, ladies and gentlemen, the due date for the newsletter
draws close, and I'm at a lack of a report.
So instead, I will give you a holiday poem. Enjoy!
P.S. I meant to get a couple of things in this newsletter, but
was unable to, they will have to wait till the next one.
Sorry!
'TWAS THE NIGHT I WAS ON-CALL
Still only half awake
I tried hard to focus
Still cursing the beeper,
That damn thing that woke us.
While what to my wandering
Eyes should appear
A bottle of kahlua
And a six pack of beer.
He spoke not a word
Of English, I thinking
But maybe that's because
I'd been doing some drinking.

Greetings, Fellow Resistance Fighters - Your Academy Commandant
here with a few words.
Just a few points of interest - I would like to extend a Well Done to
Commander Jack Kern for completion of the Communications College.
Not only did he pass, he passed with a 100%! Commander
Kern has also accepted appointment as the Communications Professor.
Well Done, and Welcome Aboard, sir.
I’d also like to welcome aboard to additional Deans to the academy.
Force Captain Duncan Robinson is taking over for me as
Professor of Science. Captain Bryan Jones will be the Professor
of Engineering. Welcome aboard gentlemen. Get your letterheads changed/ready and prepare
to receive your info!
More on the Academy: My work continues to find a new way to automate the Academy.
Sometimes, this can get frustrating and that's when I step back for a moment, take a breath
and maybe play a game of Solitaire on the computer - or something just as amusing. I have
been in consultation with a couple of friends of mine to help me out with this one, so I haven't
given up on getting this project taken care of. Until next time, I'll see you about the Force.
period with no dissention votes.
Maquis Academy Commandant reported all of the Academy Deanships are now filled. The
automation of the Academy is progressing and the Commandant has everything in hand.
The Communications Chief has reported that she has had nothing but positive feedback regarding
the Badlands. She expects a new column in the Badlands, and she wants more reports
from the Zone Coordinators.
The MFMC reports that the first project, Operation Penpal, is getting off of the ground.
Special Operations reports 5 active operatives within MFI. Spec Ops has also sent Maquis
Computer Operations has reported that ADM Laura Casey and Cyberleo have taken some
personal time for needed breaks and have fallen behind on updating the website. They also
talked about reducing the size of the current website and starting over from a foundation.
They will then add what is the more important pages so the website isn’t so huge.
The Diplomatic Corps is gearing up for Shore Leave 26. It should be a blast. They are also
The CC voted to change the list servers to another domain as the current domain seems to
be not as aggressive with tech support and service as we would like.
The CC also voted to have quarterly CC meetings to discuss business.
Meeting adjourned!

An Awarding Experience
BGN Logan Andrews, Awards Director
Well several awards have gone out since last issue and I want to send my congratulations to all
that earned them. And earn them they definitely did. All the awards are designed so that they are
not give aways. Even the Military Service award which is a (seemingly) lowly Chapter Level
award. You still have to serve time in one of the Armed Services in order to qualify, combat not required.
That is at that level so that the CO’s who are most likely to know of such service.
Over the course of the last couple of month, I have received many questions regarding the various
awards that are available for the members to earn. This month I’d thought I’d address them to
clear up some of the uncertainties. The web page will also be updated in the hopes of these questions
never needing to be asked again. But if you are ever in doubt feel free to contact me at
awards@maquis.com and I will answer any questions you might have.
How long do you have to be a member of MFI before you can earn an award?
Members may be presented with awards from the moment they sign on, such as with the Military
Service Ribbon. Obviously other ribbons will take time. The Convention and Community Service
Ribbons require so many hours before they are rewarded. International default is 50 hours but
since they are a Chapter Level ribbon CO’s may change that number higher or lower as they wish.
CO’s may also decide whether or not to allow hours from prior to joining the local club or not.
Can COs nominate to the ZCs for Unit of the Year and Rebel of the Year?
CO’s may nominate for Rebel of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. These are awards to individuals
and ZCs are unlikely to know of their achievements. As for Unit of the Year, it is up to the
ZC only to make their decision for their Zone and then that choice is forwarded to the Awards
Board for final selection for International Unit of the Year.
Do I have to outrank someone to nominate them?
Not necessarily but that will be the most likely. As a rule CO’s should be the one sending the
nomination to the Awards Board. Where that nomination comes from internally, is up to the Unit’s
individual policies. One may also be in a position to have someone under then that technically out
ranks them but because of their position, such as a FCPT ZC over a Vice ADM CO or a department
head over a staff member. So no there is not requirement that you outrank the person you
nominate, but chances are you will.
What if I want to nominate member of another cell, within my Zone, for say Rebel of the Year?
You most certainly can do so. Just send the write up for why you think they deserve the award to
the appropriate ZC. Since Departments are not limited to any one zone, any nominations for duties
completed within a Dept or SID are considered solely at the International level. Yes this
means that the Rebel of the Year may not be one of the Zone Rebels of the Year.
What if I want to nominate a Marine detachment for Unit of the Year but not the ship they are attached
to?
There may be some cases where the Marine detachment and the ship/station they are attached to
VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 PAGE 19
may do many events separate. If indeed this is the case and one unit does work outstanding
enough to warrant nomination then that part of the unit (Marine or ship) earns the ribbon and
the other unit is not authorized to wear it. However, in most cases the Marines work closely
with the ship and should be included in any ship wide nominations.
Am I allowed as a CO to nominate myself?
For Chapter Lever awards CO’s most certainly can award themselves those ribbons. Anyone
below CO must abide by whatever that unit’s bylaws and rules are. If you wish to have the
award bestowed upon you, have you ZC or, if handy, higher present you with the award.
That is all the questions I have for this issue. Feel free to send me more. A reminder that if
you want your name included in the Hall of Honor, your name ranks and the award you
earned must be included on your MSR. The Hall of Honor is being updated and should appear
soon.
The big news is Shore Leave 26 ( www.shore-leave.com), coming up in July. This
year is the first year we will have a recruiting table! This is a big chance for us to strut
our stuff with the best of them. We will hopefully have a audio/visual display, the
equipment to process applications on the spot, and the ability to make membership
cards for those Maquis
that are there and any
new members. This is
only a few of the items
planned for the table.
We will also have a room and time to conduct an open meeting. Also if all goes well
this will be the first convention that 6 members of the EC/CC have been in one place
at one time (and if you're out to get us...um, we've got clones and know how to use
them!). Gary Davis, Tom Donohoe, Kimi Brooks, Will Robertson, Logan Andrews,
and myself will be there in addition to other Maquis members. Awards will be given
and received at that time. I sincerely hope many of you will be able to come!
Editor’s Note: Christina has decided that she’s too busy and has stepped down from
the Membership Department. At this time, ADM Donohoe will be taking over those
duties.

Commanding Officer
Maquis Update
Zone 3 and MFMC Division 1 report is as follows: I have begun to determine
who is active in this area and gaining information for reporting and coordination
purposes. Two of the Zone ships are accounted for and the third has
been incommunicado since the CO resigned as Zone 3 Coordinator. The two
Massachusetts units listed on the Zone Cell locator (http://www.maquis.com/
cellfinder/zone3/) are one and the same. I heard from the former CO of the
MFS Tsunami, but she is a lone survivor in Eastport, Maine. The MFS Phantom
and the LP Kiowa are the only two Marine units to contact me so far. This
has been the third month in a row that I have attempted to contact the Gamma
Knights for a report and every email and website address comes back as invalid
or undeliverable. There has been no attempt on their part to contact me. The MFS Phantom reports
that everything is fine and that they ran a convention in the middle of the month and had a bowling
party/meeting at the end of last month. The MFMC Staff page was updated and a new Division 1
web page is planned for design.
The MFS Phantom and the LP Kiowa contacted me last month and two new units (MFS Charleston
Harbor and LP Grethor) contacted me this month. As far as I can tell, there are other units that are
alive and well, just not reporting in to me. Maybe they are reporting in to the Brigade COs or Division
XO and not to me. I don't know for sure. A new 1st Brigade Commander has been appointed and
Colonel Bryan R. Jones is swiftly making strides to get his brigade up to date by making contact with
his units and trying to establish battalion commanders. An XO for the Brigade has not been established
yet. The MFMC Staff page was updated and a new Division 1 web page is planned for design.
Division 1 Position openings are as follows: 1st Brigade XO
2nd Brigade CO and XO
3rd Brigade XO
All Battalion Commanders
The Command Staff of the ICV Heghnach (K'moghjIH, Ksimka and Ferber) attended Beach Bash
2003 on November 6-10th. We all participated in running at least one of the Warrior Games. Ksimka
was very busy as Khon Kijo's personal Attaché for the event. She had the responsibility for making
sure that NOTHING got MISSED and EVERYTHING ran SMOOTHLY. Many House members kept
House Initiate Ferber busy with tasks and he performed with flying colors. It was a very good time
had by all. Captain SyRack (I think that's the way he spelled it) of the MAV Dragonstorm won
the Honored Beach Bash Warrior Belt (First Place in the Warrior's Challenge as he did at Dover). A
small contingent from the MAV Dragonstorm (including General K'Tylo) attended the event. Everyone
on the ICV Heghnach did well in the Warrior Challenge, but XO Ksimka got first place in the Tribble
Toss, where I tied for/came in second place in several events. Congratulations, Colonel/Commander
Ksimka, on a job well done.
The Commander and XO of the ICV Heghnach (K'moghjIH & Ksimka) finally went on their honeymoon
from November 28th until December 9th. We had an excellent time at Walt Disney World Florida.
Many photos were taken and if you would like to see a sample of them or all of them, contact me in
a private message. I have distributed them to a few people already.
Klingon / STARFLEET Joint Operations Update
The ICV Heghnach/USS Inferno had informal meetings this month at Beach Bash. The commissioning
party was held with food and drink being provided, but unfortunately, the crew could not make it because
they needed to return to their own Region of space to continue patrol routes. A more formal
ceremony will be planned for a later date and sponsored by Admiral Rosenzweig. Carol Wivell, mother
of David Ferber and civilian member of the USS Inferno, attended her first convention ever when she
attended Beach Bash this year. She really enjoyed the Planet Hollywood Klingon Invasion and Great
Hall events. My sister, Saraka, is the House Ki'RK Vulcan Ambassador and she got married on Saturday
night in the Great Hall. I carried the USA National Colors under the direction of Captain Jorf in a
flag ceremony and death howl to honor the crew of the IKV Kahless' Revenge.
The ICV Heghnach/USS Inferno will have their Command Staff meeting on Saturday, December 27th.
The official commissioning paperwork is being completed again and the party is being planned for a
later date, sponsored by Admiral Rosenzweig.
Fundraising Idea
After showing my Ship's Log to several members of the House Ki'RK (a scrapbook of sorts showing
crew roster & accomplishments, ship activities and accomplishments, newsletters, community service,
etc.), an idea came up to possibly try and hold fundraisers to sponsor a trip to Beach Bash for our disabled
crewmembers that have never been to a convention or interacted with Klingons live (namely our
Fort Fairfield member). I would like opinions from the ENTIRE crew on this matter. I also would like to
hear from some of our recently silent crewmembers. Let me know that you are getting this newsletter /
monthly report or have anything to add.
POP TAB CHALLENGE
The other thing that I kept forgetting to report was the House Ki'RK pop tab collection for charity that we
do. According to the Ronald McDonald House, "one pound of pop tabs is worth $.04 more than one
pound of pop cans. Depending on the present value of aluminum, the value from pop tabs averages 50
cents to 55 cents per pound. There are approximately 1,300 tabs in a pound. The Ronald McDonald
House currently raises $500 a month from the recycling of pop tabs. This amount could easily double
or triple if everyone who reads this article starts to recycle.” If we spread the word that we are doing
this, we could easily increase the amount that the House Ki'RK raises. Please give your pop tabs to
any House Ki'RK warrior, so that we can increase this fundraising effort. The Challenge has been issued
by Quadrant Commander K'Hergh for each quadrant to collect as many tabs as possible. K'Hergh
and I would like to see the Ohio-PA Quadrant reign supreme in the amount of tabs collected.
Hope everyone had a good Christmas. 8-)
So far I've gotten 1 new member for L.P. Juno Beach and will hopefully have a few
more by the New Year. I'll also be holding a Battletech Tournament at a local convention,
can we say recruiting. As I'm working on a meeting chapter and recruiting at local
Toronto Cons while doing Battletech Gaming. I'm inviting any chapter who'd like to recruit new
members at these cons to send me some Flyers and applications. MFI can grow in Canada. Now
for a few admin headaches, my new member and I need user names and passwords for the MFI
website and the Academy Courses. I need this to advance in MFI, otherwise I sit and rot while everyone
else gets to pass me by. I've emailed both Will and the Academy Commandant and have
mentioned this once or twice to you Christina. Anyhow I hope you all have a Happy New Year.
ship, Starfleet International became engulfed in a major internal struggle which didn't co-exist with
Nebula's Motto of "Fun!!".
Sooo.... As they did once before, they again planned to break away from the "establishment" to ultimately
create one of the 1st Internet based fan organizations known today as Maquis Forces International.
Why did you decide to join the Maquis?
I had made some good friends in the MFA and some of
them were also in MFI, so I decided to join to see what it
was all about.
What brought you to become a part of the Maquis?
Same as above. Also, I noticed that they didn't have as
much of the politics of other organizations.
What Maquis Academy Courses did you take and pass?
All of them.
What is your favorite Star Trek, Series, Episode, Movie?
All of them. DS9 with Worf and General Martok most specifically.
What brought you to become a Marine in the Maquis?
In every Star Trek organization that I have been involved
with, I found that I liked the more military aspect of the Marines
rather than Fleet. I spent 9 years in the military ground
forces, so I call that home. Also, Martok was a Marine.
What type of ship do you have?
Commodore’s Corner
Greetings, Fellow Maquis. Commodore
Cummings here.
Wow. It’s been busy around the resistance,
no? We’ve had plenty of activity
over the last few weeks, not to mention
(straightens shirt) my promotion… Haha!
I’d personally like to take this moment to
say “Thanks and Bravo Zulu!” to Admiral
Mary Kerns. Not only has she done a
great job with the Academy, but she also
gave me the chance to serve as Science
Dean, paving the way for my takeover as of
11 November. I’m really excited to get this
party started with the reorganization
needed to get the Academy back on the
road.
I’d like to take a moment to address an issue that I have seen becoming a bigger issue, not necessarily
around the Maquis, but in public. The use of the popular club drug known as Ecstasy, (also known
as E, Liquid E, but officially known as MDMA - methylenedioxyamphetamine) has become a problem,
especially with people around my age, college students. It’s use by college students alone has risen
dramatically in the last decade, especially in the last 3 years. Nearly 5 percent of 10th and 12th graders
and about 2 percent of 8th graders said they had used MDMA in the past year, a recent study from
the National Institute on Drug Abuse reported. This is not only disturbing, but dangerous. Ecstasy itself
is not only dangerous, but frequently laced with other drugs, such as GHB, a date-rape drug. This
also paves the way for youngsters to other, more dangerous “hard stuff.”
Being in Navy JROTC in High School, I remember watching a broadcast from the Master Chief Petty
Officer of the Navy, Jim Herdt, the “MCPON Minute” mention this one morning just regarding Ecstasy
use. The Navy now holds a Zero-Tolerance when it comes to personnel and drug use. In my opinion,
I think we need to all set a Zero-Tolerance directive for ourselves. This may sound corny, but just say
“No!” to the urge to try, or the person offering. Not only would it be cunning of you, but you’ll stand up
for your right to good health. It will pay off later, if not by a longer life, but lower insurance costs! ;-)
Your life isn’t worth a few minutes of fake good vibes, then a couple of days of chemical depression,
your body begging for more of the drug.
On a more positive note, I was talking with our illustrious editor, Commodore Cha’Suran, and I thought
I would pass on something that I am doing.
As I said before, being in Naval JROTC for four years, I acquired quite a few uniforms. After graduation,
the ones that were property of the Government were, naturally, returned – but the ones I owned
all of a sudden became useless. Just taking up closet space. After a few months of being in the MFI, I
realized that I could use a set of my Khakis and alter them for MFI usage! Replace the collar insignia,
add some MFI stuff and Voila! Instant MFI uniform, and my roughly $100 just went a little farther in
life! I also did the same with my Summer Whites. They look good! Now, I just need to get myself a
set of Commodore pins. (laughing)
Until next time, fellow Maquis: I’ll see you about the Force.

A TREKKIN’ CHRISTMAS
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the ship,
Not a circuit was buzzing, Not one microchip;
The phasers were hung in the armory securely,
In hopes that no aliens would get up that early.
The crewmen were nestled all snug in their bunks,
(Except for the few who were partying drunks);
And Picard in his nightshirt And Bev in her lace,
Had just settled down for a neat face to face...
When out in the halls There arose such a racket,
That we leapt from our beds, Pulling on pants and jacket.
Away to the lifts We all shot like a gun,
Leapt into the cars And yelled loudly, "Deck One!"
The bridge Red -Alert lights, Which flashed through the din,
Gave a lustre of Hades To objects within.
When, what, on the viewscreen, Should our eyes behold,
But a weird kind of sleigh, And some guy who looked old.
But the glint in his eyes Was so strange and askew,
That we knew in a moment It had to be Q.
His sleigh grew much larger As closer he came.
Then Beamed onto the bridge And addressed us by name:
"It's Riker! It's Data! It's Worf and Jean -Luc!
It's Geordi! And Wesley, The genetic fluke!
To the top of the bridge, To the top of the hall!
Now float away! Float away! Float away all!"
As leaves in the autumn Are whisked off the street,
So the floor of the bridge Came away from our feet,
And up to the ceiling Our bodies they flew,
As the captain called out, "What the hell is this, Q?!"
The prankster just laughed And expanded his grin,
And, snapping his fingers, He vanished again.
As we took in our plight And were looking around,
The spell was removed, And we crashed to the ground.
Then Q, dressed in fur From his head to his toe,
Appeared once again, To continue the show.
"That's enough!" cried the captain, "You'll stop this at once!"
And Riker said, "Worf! Take aim at this dunce!"
"I'm deeply offended, Jean - Luc," replied Q,
"I just want to celebrate Christmas with you."
VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 PAGE 31
As we scoffed at his words, He produced a large sack.
He dumped out the contents And took a step back.
"I've brought gifts," he said, "Just to show I'm sincere.
There's something delightful For everyone here."
He sat on the floor And dug into his pile,
And handed out gifts With his most charming smile:
"For Counselor Troi, There's no need to explain.
Here's Tylenol Beta For all of your pain.
For Worf I've some mints, as his breath's not too great,
And for Geordi LaForge, an inflatable date.
For Wesley, some hormones, and Clearasil Plus.
For Data, a joke book; For Riker, a truss.
For Beverly Crusher, There's sleek lingerie,
And for Jean - Luc, The thrill of just seeing her that way."
Then he sprang to his feet With that grin on his face,
And clapping his hands, Disappeared into space.
But we heard him exclaim As he dwindled from sight,
"Merry Christmas to all, And to all a good flight!"

“Carpenter Street”
Enterprise Episode Review
Plot Summary: In 2004, a man named Loomis
is promised money in exchange for a human being
by a Xindi-Reptilian. He picks up a streetwalker
he knows from the blood bank where he
works, drugging her and taking her to a warehouse
where several other people already lie on
cots, hooked to IVs.
BADLANDS
On Enterprise in the 22nd century, Crewman
Daniels visits Archer, telling him that the timeline
has been corrupted and there are Xindi in Detroit,
Michigan in the 21st century. Archer tells
T'Pol that he is going back to find the aliens on
Earth and asks her to accompany him, despite
her doubts about the feasibility of time travel.
They travel nearly a hundred light years and 150
chronological years into Earth's past, where they steal a car, then money to buy gas. By tracking the
Xindi life signs, they discover that Loomis is working for him and follow him home, where they pretend
to be law enforcement and discover that he has been collecting people for his unknown employers.
They want one human of each blood type, and still need two more. Since Archer has B- blood, he decides
that Loomis will take him as his next "victim”.
After Loomis delivers Archer to the warehouse, T'Pol forces him at phase pistol-point to wait in his station
wagon with her. When Archer investigates the Xindi facility hidden in the back of the warehouse,
he finds a bio-reactor and concludes that they are working on a bio-weapon, testing it in the past to
hide it from adversaries in Archer's time. Speaking to T'Pol via communicator, he realizes that he must
destroy the equipment by which the Xindi intend to return to their own era. Though he manages to
down the Xindi with the temporal beacon, his weapon alerts the others to his presence, and they flee
with the unfinished bio-weapon in a canister.
When Archer calls for aid, T'Pol orders Loomis to drive her back to the warehouse, but Loomis alerts
his employers with the wagon's horn before he realizes that they are reptilian aliens. T'Pol shoots a
second Xindi but the third races away, apparently intending to release the unfinished virus which could
conceivably kill three-fourths of Earth's population. While T'Pol lays down cover fire, Archer sneaks
behind the Xindi, kills him after his refusal to explain the weapon, and captures the canister. Back on
Enterprise, he takes the weapon to Phlox for analysis, while T'Pol shows Trip the dead Xindi and
equipment they have brought forward in time with them. Meanwhile, in Detroit in 2004, the police arrest
Loomis, refusing to listen to his stories of ray guns and lizard people.
Analysis: "Carpenter Street" is a very entertaining but ultimately pointless time-travel episode that redeems
its existence primarily by not requiring a reset button. It does little to further the Xindi arc other
than to establish that their time travel equipment is as sophisticated as that of the Suliban...and to establish
that it apparently does not come from the Suliban, as Daniels indicates to Archer that he has no
reason to doubt the time-traveling Suliban informer who told Archer that the Xindi were attacking Earth
to prevent their own destruction.
Archer greets Daniels with an entirely appropriate tantrum, though for once I was wondering where
Captain Airlock was -- about time Daniels showed up, indeed, especially since he confirms that none
of this happened in the "real" timeline of Star Trek. I don't understand how the changes can not have
VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 PAGE 33
reached Daniels yet -- shouldn't any change in the distant past be instantaneous, like with the Guardian of
Forever and all of Starfleet disappearing? If history mentions no Human-Xindi conflict, and Daniels and his
world still exist, I'm inclined to take that as a sign that the Xindi won't succeed in destroying Earth and its
people after all.
But apart from the Kathryn Janeway-patented causality headache, this episode offers quite a lot of fun.
Guest star Leland Orser, who played the creepy hologram Dejaren on Voyager's "Revulsion", is superb as
Loomis, one of the most repugnant villains I can remember on Trek and that's including every Cardassian,
Klingon and Romulan I can think of. As T'Pol says, he represents the absolute slime of humanity -- his
motivation is greed, his M.O. is violence and he's as morally corrupt as they come. He preys on prostitutes
presumably seeking HIV tests, on men in wheelchairs presumably too helpless to fight him; he wants his
money quickly and easily with no thought for the possible fates of his victims; though he says he wouldn't
work for terrorists, he warns the Xindi of T'Pol's presence, even though he believes her to be legitimate law
enforcement and his employers to be, well, probable terrorists.
By these standards, Archer's theft of a vehicle and money in the interests of saving the world seem as noble
and laudable as Kirk's theft of clothes in "The City on the Edge of Forever”. It's easier to loathe human
garbage than the aliens fighting for what they believe is the survival of their species, and watching Loomis
eating a greasy, disgusting fast food burger, dripping meat onto T'Pol's vegetarian thighs, is perversely entertaining...more
so than listening to Archer attempt to order the food from the drive-thru, insisting to a
woman with an accent that no, he doesn't want the combo. It's much less entertaining watching Archer let
T'Pol untie the guy so he can hit him, saying he feels better about doing it with Loomis' hands free, but
even so, it's impossible to feel sorry for the creep; one simply wants Archer to be that much better than
him.
There's simple, silly pleasure in listening to T'Pol reminding Archer to turn the headlights on, watching
them walk around in ugly civvies, seeing them against what's allegedly the backdrop of Detroit though I
swear they used that same warehouse entrance in an episode of 24 the year before last. The ray gun and
lizard-man jokes, while predictable, work nicely, and the low-key visuals seem much less forced than those
in "North Star" where it seemed that every Western cliché was being thrown at us at once, for no apparent
reason. Archer gets most of the action sequences but T'Pol comes across very well, with answers for
most of his questions (I love that she knew exactly how to find the Xindi temporal beacon with a single
scan!) And there's a neat moment where she resets her phase pistol from kill (for the Xindi) to stun so that
she can shoot Loomis. It's obvious what's coming, and really hard not to anticipate it.
Speaking of reason...exactly how does this episode advance the Xindi arc? Well, we learn that the Xindi
have moved ahead with their plan for a bio-weapon, as Rajiin told Archer; we learn about the time-travel
capabilities, and receive confirmation of the ruthlessness of the Reptilians (it seems possible that their unnamed
enemies are another, less brutal Xindi species, thus necessitating that they work to exterminate all
of humanity in Earth's past rather than in their own era). We don't learn whether there is a connection between
the Xindi and the Temporal Cold War, nor Dark Future Man, and I'm not even certain that I believe
Daniels is telling the truth about the future timeline.
It's possible that most of these plot threads will return -- the time travel, the bio-weapon, Daniels, a possible
Suliban connection -- and then this episode will seem like a critical moment in this season's storyline.
Right now it seems more like entertaining fluff, loosely connected. But as entertaining fluff goes, it's warm
and witty and well done.
ST: The Lost Era - Book Reviews
by ADM Rob Johnson
BADLANDS
I just finished the 2nd Lost Era book entitled "Serpents Among the Ruins".
This book takes place 18 years after "Generations" and 53 years
prior to "Encounter at Farpoint". The main characters in this book being
CAPT Harriman of the 1701-B and his 1st Officer, Demora Sulu, daughter
of Captain Sulu of USS Excelsior. The last time we saw Demora
Sulu, she was the communications officer on the 1701-B.
Since there's not alot of information about Harriman and CDR Sulu, this
book entailed much more back-story than the 1st book of the series, but
it is a good story of those interested in Covert Operations and Spy novels.
This book tries to cover how the Federation/Romulan treaty of Algeron,
referred to in TNG, came about.
The only dowside to this book that I can see, is the book's author...David
R George III. This is only his 4th attempt at writing for Trek. He has written
a 1st Season Voyager episode and 2 DS9 Short Stories prior to this
undertaking. His biggest downfall, in my opinion, is being too friendly
with his Thesaurus! I've done alot of reading and been around the block
a few times, but I've found myself having to think about some of the
words he unneccesarily used. Case In Point: Using the word "respire" instead of "breathe". I don't know
of a single person, including the Medical community that uses the word "respire". There's another couple
dozen words used that didn't need to be. In my opinion, this detracted from my reading. Over all, I did
enjoy this book and look forward to starting the 3rd in the series.
This book spans the years of 2328 - 2346 and covers the Klingon-
Cardassian eighteen year Betreka Nebula incident discussed by Bashir &
Garak in the DS9 episode "Way of the Warrior". Some of the main characters
include General Worf (Mogh's father), Kang, Kor, Curzon Dax, Ian
Troi, Enabran Tain, Legate Kell & Capt. Garrett of the Enterprise-C.
For you "Forehead" & "Spoonhead" fans (terms used in the book) this
should be quite a quick read. As in the 2nd book of the series, there is
more espionage, as well as small skirmishes throughout the book. It spans
the family line of General Worf, Capt. Mogh and young Worf, as well as
the career of Ian Troy, and continuing careers of Ambassador Curzon Dax
and agent Elias Vaughn.
In my humble opinion, the writing style of Keith DeCandido in this novel
was less pretentious than that of David George III's "Serpents Among the
Ruins". Because of all the background that needed to be laid, this book
was also slower than "The Sundered", but not as slow going as
"Serpents". The one odd part about the book, was that its time period
overlapped the actual destruction of the Enterprise-C, so I'm interested in
getting to "Well of Souls", which deals directly with Capt. Garrett and her command of the "Big E".
All in all, I believe anyone interested in the back story of the Trek universe in general, and Klingon history
in particular, will enjoy this book. If anyone else has opinions of these stories, please speak up. I'm sure
nobody wants to settle for MY opinions, after all, we all have different likes, dislikes and interpretations of
Trek.

Takei Treks Back to WWII Internment Camp
BADLANDS
A cypress root harvested from an Arkansas swamp 60
years ago is one of the few mementoes Star Trek actor
George Takei has from his childhood at a World War II internment
camp. The gnarled knee reminds him of a part of
his past he had revisited only in his mind -- until this week.
As he traveled Sunday through this remote stretch of southeast
Arkansas farmland, where he and more than 8,500
other Japanese-Americans lived during the war, Takei
spoke of finding resilience in beauty.
"What the root symbolizes for me is that my parents were able to survive by finding and creating
things that were beautiful," said Takei, who keeps the memento on his desk in his Los
Angeles home.
Takei, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu in the original Star Trek series and in six Star Trek movies,
was four when he, his parents and two younger siblings were ordered from their Los Angeles
home and taken by railroad under armed guard to Arkansas after Pearl Harbor. Six decades
later, Takei drove alongside the same railroad tracks to visit the former Rohwer Relocation
Center.
"My mother said the scariest part about that trip was the uncertainty," Takei said, glancing out
of a car window at the abandoned rail tracks that once led to the camp. "I remember my father
telling us we were going on a long vacation to a place called Arkansas." The Takeis
spent a year at the Arkansas camp. They were later sent to a higher security camp at Tule
Lake, California.
Takei, 64, returned to Rohwer in part to bring awareness to an effort to preserve the history of
the Arkansas camps by the Little Rock-based Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, the University
of Arkansas at Little Rock and the Japanese-American National Museum. Takei is chairman
of the museum board.
More than 120,000 Japanese-Americans were sent from the West Coast and Hawaii to 10
internment camps. Eight camps were in the West; two Arkansas sites were the only ones in
the South.
After the September 11 attacks, the actor drew on his history and celebrity to fight discrimination
against Arab-Americans by helping organize a candlelight vigil at the museum and a public
radio forum. "There were chilling echoes of World War II," he said.

In Memoriam: Kellie Waymire
November 17, 2003
We are very saddened to report that actress Kellie
Waymire, fondly remembered as Ensign Elizabeth
Cutler from the first season of Enterprise, passed
away unexpectedly last Thursday evening at her
home. The cause of death is still unconfirmed, but
early reports indicate she died of natural causes.
Kellie also appeared on Star Trek: Voyager in the
episode "Muse" as Layna, the alien actress who portrayed
Seven of Nine in Kelis' plays based on Torres'
stories.
Enterprise star Scott Bakula said, "The entire cast,
crew, and staff of Enterprise was deeply saddened by
the loss of Kellie Waymire... She was a beautiful, talented,
and gifted young lady. She had a beautiful
spirit and we all deeply miss her. We've lost a shining
star in the Enterprise family. We extend our condolences
to family and friends of Kellie, as well as all
those who have had the pleasure of working with her
professionally. She truly will be missed.”
Elizabeth Cutler - Played by Kellie Waymire
An exobiologist serving on the Enterprise NX-01, Cutler has a specialty in entomology. She
was part of the away team that was infected with a strange hallucinogen while trapped by a
storm on a mysterious Earth-like planet's surface. Later, she was mentored by Dr. Phlox to
become a part-time medic, assisting him in his research on the crisis on Valakis and tending
to an injured Ensign Mayweather while the doctor was partaking of his annual hibernation.
She also developed a romantic attraction to Phlox, and enjoyed taking in the occasional
movie with him. Ultimately, however, she told the doctor that she just wanted to be
friends. Cutler also tried to befriend the aloof T'Pol, but to no avail.

FARPOINT
February 13 -15, 2004
Farpoint is a Baltimore-based, Science Fiction Media Convention, held each February
at Marriott's Hunt Valley Inn. We're a Fan-Run, Fan-Friendly Con, with a lot more to
offer than your basic Autographs-And-A-Dealers-Room "Show."
If you're a long-time Fan, Farpoint is a return to Fandom the way it "used" to be --
producing plays, writing fan fiction, building and showing costumes, displaying your
SF-inspired artwork, arguing about -- er -- discussing our favorite fandoms.
If you're a new Fan, welcome! We're glad you're one of us. Come meet actors you've
watched and authors you've read, and make a lot of new friends who have the same
interests your 'other' friends may not appreciate.
Please go to http://www.bcpl.net/~wilsonr/ for more information.
