cultures to reflect and speak.<br />
68] When indigenous people nurture a tree, they create a sacred space, and<br />
the tree in the community will nurture life as it belongs in the ecosystem and<br />
will come to maturity long after that generation dies. The tree gives<br />
something to future generations and creates space allowing for diversity <strong>of</strong><br />
life, the presence <strong>of</strong> spirit and God. Many indigenous communities are<br />
bound to the land, as was Adam who was adama - ―<strong>of</strong> the soil‖; the soil is<br />
always understood in close relationship to water, and both are seen as<br />
sustaining life and the community. The land is the promise <strong>of</strong> life (<strong>of</strong><br />
security and <strong>of</strong> peace), <strong>of</strong> sharing as in giving and receiving freely—<br />
something that needs to be learned again from those who live closest to the<br />
land.<br />
