<strong>Academic</strong> Activities of <strong>the</strong> Permanent Faculty<br />
<strong>Academic</strong> <strong>Years</strong> <strong>1987</strong>-88 <strong>and</strong> <strong>1988</strong>-89<br />
GLEN BOWERSOCK is <strong>the</strong> general editor of a new series of books on <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />
world. Two volumes of this series, published by Harvard University Press under<br />
<strong>the</strong> overall title Revealing Antiquity, appeared during <strong>the</strong> period covered by this<br />
report. During <strong>the</strong>se two years Professor Bowersock published twenty-one articles<br />
on <strong>the</strong> Roman <strong>and</strong> early Byzantine empires, <strong>the</strong> pre-Islamic Arabs <strong>and</strong> ancient <strong>and</strong><br />
modem historiography. He participated in several scholarly symposia <strong>and</strong> lectured<br />
at <strong>the</strong> University of Toronto, Boston University, Columbia <strong>and</strong> Yale as weO as<br />
delivering <strong>the</strong> Thomas Spencer Jerome Lectures at <strong>the</strong> University of Michigan <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> American Academy in Rome. This series of six lectures, entided "Hellenism<br />
in Late Antiquity," will be published in 1990 by <strong>the</strong> University of Michigan Press.<br />
He was elected a member of <strong>the</strong> American Philosophical Society in <strong>1989</strong>.<br />
GILES CONSTABLE completed <strong>and</strong> submitted <strong>for</strong> publication The Cartulary of<br />
Homblieres <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Letters between Bernard Berenson <strong>and</strong> Charles H. Coster. Scholarly<br />
articles by Professor Constable were published in <strong>the</strong> Journal des Savants <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />
book, Horizons marins, Itineraires spirituels. During <strong>the</strong> academic years <strong>1987</strong>-88 <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>1988</strong>-89 he participated in numerous symposia <strong>and</strong> conferences. Sponsoring insti-<br />
tutions included Barnard College, <strong>the</strong> Medieval Academy of America, <strong>the</strong> Center<br />
<strong>for</strong> Medieval <strong>and</strong> Renaissance Studies [University of Cali<strong>for</strong>nia at Los Angeles],<br />
Princeton University's Shelby Cullom Davis Center <strong>for</strong> Historical Studies, New<br />
York University <strong>and</strong> Dumbarton Oaks. He lectured at Harvard University, <strong>the</strong><br />
University of Toledo, Mt. Holyoke College, <strong>the</strong> University of Utrecht in The<br />
Ne<strong>the</strong>rl<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> University of North Carolina <strong>and</strong> elsewhere.<br />
JOHN H. ELLIOTT'S publications during <strong>the</strong> period covered by this report included<br />
Spain <strong>and</strong> Its World, 1500-1700: Selected Essays. In <strong>1987</strong>-88 he received <strong>the</strong><br />
Medal of Honor of <strong>the</strong> Universidad Intemacional Menendez y Pelayo in Madrid,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Spanish Ambassador to <strong>the</strong> United States conferred on him <strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong><br />
Cross of <strong>the</strong> Order of Alfonso X El Sabio in a ceremony at <strong>the</strong> Institute. At <strong>the</strong><br />
end of <strong>the</strong> academic year <strong>1988</strong>-89 Professor Elliott was appointed Regius Professor<br />
of Modem History at <strong>the</strong> University of Ox<strong>for</strong>d, effective in <strong>the</strong> autumn of 1990.<br />
CHRISTIAN HABiCHT completed two books, Cicero <strong>the</strong> Politician <strong>and</strong> Cicero der Politiker<br />
The <strong>for</strong>mer will appear in <strong>the</strong> series, "Ancient Society <strong>and</strong> History," of The<br />
Johns Hopkins University Press; <strong>the</strong> latter will be published by C.H. Beck in<br />
Munich. Dunng <strong>the</strong> academic years <strong>1987</strong>-88 <strong>and</strong> <strong>1988</strong>-89 Professor Habicht<br />
published eleven articles in American <strong>and</strong> European journals <strong>and</strong> contributed an<br />
essay to Bathron, a Festschrift <strong>for</strong> H. Drerup. He gave <strong>the</strong> annual C.A. Robinson<br />
Lecture at Brown University on "Cicero <strong>and</strong> Caesar." Some of <strong>the</strong> results of his<br />
