continuing research on late Hellenistic Athens were included in the first annual
David Magie Lecture at Princeton University, which was subsequently pub-
lished by Princeton University Press.
During the academic years 1987-88 and 1988-89 irving lavin continued his
research on various periods of the history of European art and culture. He con-
tributed an article, "Le Bemin et son image du Roi-Soleil," to the Festschrift in
honor of Andre Chastel, which appeared in Rome in 1987. He also lectured
and taught widely. As a participant in the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Pro-
gram he taught at eight colleges and universities throughout the United States.
He presented two series of lectures at the Istituto Italiano Per Gli Studi Filosofici
in Naples. He was among the scholars featured in the television series, "Art of
the Western World," a production of WNET in New York that was broadcast
by public television throughout the country.
At the beginning of the academic year 1988-89 peter paret's book. Art as History,
was published by Princeton University Press. A German edition of this book has
subsequendy appeared. During the period covered by this report two of Professor
Paret's earlier book-length works were reissued in paperback editions: The Berlin
Secession [Harvard University Press] and Carl von Clausewitz's classic. On War, edit-
ed and translated with Michael Howard. Professor Paret published numerous scholarly
articles on various aspects of European history and historical interpretation. He
lectured at Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stanford and elsewhere. In 1987
he was appointed Senior Fellow by Courtesy of the Hoover Institution, Stanford
University, and in 1988 he was inducted into the American Philosophical Society.
