continuing research on late Hellenistic A<strong>the</strong>ns were included in <strong>the</strong> first annual<br />
David Magie Lecture at Princeton University, which was subsequently pub-<br />
lished by Princeton University Press.<br />
During <strong>the</strong> academic years <strong>1987</strong>-88 <strong>and</strong> <strong>1988</strong>-89 irving lavin continued his<br />
research on various periods of <strong>the</strong> history of European art <strong>and</strong> culture. He con-<br />
tributed an article, "Le Bemin et son image du Roi-Soleil," to <strong>the</strong> Festschrift in<br />
honor of Andre Chastel, which appeared in Rome in <strong>1987</strong>. He also lectured<br />
<strong>and</strong> taught widely. As a participant in <strong>the</strong> Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Pro-<br />
gram he taught at eight colleges <strong>and</strong> universities throughout <strong>the</strong> United States.<br />
He presented two series of lectures at <strong>the</strong> Istituto Italiano Per Gli Studi Filosofici<br />
in Naples. He was among <strong>the</strong> scholars featured in <strong>the</strong> television series, "Art of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Western World," a production of WNET in New York that was broadcast<br />
by public television throughout <strong>the</strong> country.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> beginning of <strong>the</strong> academic year <strong>1988</strong>-89 peter paret's book. Art as History,<br />
was published by Princeton University Press. A German edition of this book has<br />
subsequendy appeared. During <strong>the</strong> period covered by this report two of Professor<br />
Paret's earlier book-length works were reissued in paperback editions: The Berlin<br />
Secession [Harvard University Press] <strong>and</strong> Carl von Clausewitz's classic. On War, edit-<br />
ed <strong>and</strong> translated with Michael Howard. Professor Paret published numerous scholarly<br />
articles on various aspects of European history <strong>and</strong> historical interpretation. He<br />
lectured at Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Stan<strong>for</strong>d <strong>and</strong> elsewhere. In <strong>1987</strong><br />
he was appointed Senior Fellow by Courtesy of <strong>the</strong> Hoover Institution, Stan<strong>for</strong>d<br />
University, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>1988</strong> he was inducted into <strong>the</strong> American Philosophical Society.<br />
